_______________

(from Wikipedia)

Children of Men is a 2006 dystopian science fiction film directed by Alfonso Cuarón, based on a script loosely adapted from P. D. James's 1992 novel The Children of Men. In 2027, two decades of human infertility have left society on the brink of collapse. Illegal immigrants seek sanctuary in the United Kingdom, where the last functioning government imposes oppressive immigration laws on refugees. Clive Owen plays civil servant Theo Faron, who must help a pregnant West African refugee (Claire-Hope Ashitey) escape the chaos. Children of Men also stars Julianne Moore, Michael Caine, Pam Ferris, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

(partial synopsis with possible spoilers)

In 2027, after 18 years of worldwide female infertility, civilization is on the brink of collapse as humanity faces the grim reality of extinction. For years the United Kingdom, one of the few stable nations with a functioning government, has been deluged by asylum seekers from around the world, fleeing the chaos and war which has taken hold in most countries.

In response Britain has become a militarized police state as British forces round up and detain immigrants. Kidnapped by an immigrants rights group known as "The Fishes", former activist turned cynical bureaucrat Theo Faron (Clive Owen) is brought to its leader, his estranged American wife Julian Taylor (Julianne Moore). They separated after their son died from a flu pandemic in 2008.

Julian offers Theo money to acquire transit papers for a young refugee named Kee (Clare-Hope Ashitey), which Theo obtains from his cousin Nigel (Danny Huston), a government minister.

Kee reveals her importance to Theo: she is pregnant. Julian had told her to only trust him, intending to hand Kee to the "Human Project", a supposed scientific group in the Azores dedicated to curing infertility.

(My take on this movie)

This movie reminds me a little of The Omega Man, in that mankind is in bad shape due some kind of plague. The plot is a bit grim for my tastes (I'm a cockeyed optimist), but this film is highly regarded, as you can see from this excerpt from Wikipedia.

The film received very positive reviews. According to the review tallying website Rotten Tomatoes, Children of Men received a 93% overall approval out of 208 reviews from critics, and on Metacritic, the film has a rating of 84 based on 36 reviews.

A very long....rather boring movie that is only enlightened by a nice single shot non edited sequence. Reminds me of the 60s movie 'ZPG' for some reason.

The trailer makes the movie appear fast paced and very dramatic. It's also grime as hell, which is not usually the kind of movie I prefer, as I mentioned earlier.

Decide for yourself, guys.

One of the things I liked in the movie, is that you really don't know what the situation in the rest of the world is actually like. You really can't believe the news reports, because the government controls it all, and uses it to control the population.

A spoiler: My favorite scene is how the fighting immediately stops when both sides hear the baby crying.

So did "Mad Max". If Max and his wife hadn't had a child, it could be considered part of this universe.

At one time they were talking about making this movie into a TV show.
