For the last few years, I've built an Xmas ornament each holiday season for a friend. It's usually something traditional like a wooden soldier or Santa's sleigh. Eventually, you run out of traditional subjects. So , this year, I'm going for something different.

I used to have visions of scratchbuilding a Lost in Space robot model but that project was put on the back burner when Moebius released their very accurate kit. But I still have that urge so I've channeled my efforts into a simpler project. I'm making a B9 Xmas ornament. Of course, there have been a couple of commerically made B9 ornaments over the years but making this as a one-of-a-kind is the point of the excercise.

This won't be an accurate "model' style build. Details will have to be left off to accomodate the reality that this is intended to see actual use as a tree-hanging ornament that will get tossed in a box every year. It can't have small projections that will snag or break off. Things will be simplified to be appropriate for the small size (under 4"). Fine detail would get lost so, for example, there will be fewer folds in the legs. It will be slightly cartoonish but still very recognizable as a B9.

The project is ongoing right now but has not been completed.

Here's some pics.

First, work on the torso. It's made of poplar and painted with lacquer.

Here's the main leg section carved from basswood and painted.

Hot dang, keep them pictures comin', Brent! This is good stuff.

Quick question: Can we get a picture of you in your green "elf costume" while working on it in the next installment? And get your friend to dress up like Santa and stand behind you, looking pleased with your work.

It would make a great Christmas card!
Very Happy

My friend is a leggy, 5' 10" hot chick who married the wrong guy 30 years ago. I do this every year so that she'll remember me just in case her husband gets hit by a bus (hey, accidents happen).

Things are moving a bit faster than anticipated so I'm posting a pic of the footbox assembly.

The flat knee plates are plastic sheet. The lower legs and footbox are basswood. The dowel is affixed with polyurethane glue and will assure a solid bond with the upper legs.

Keep goin'. Keep goin'.

(Stopping to eat often takes time away from a project.)

Even better. Put her in an outfit like this --

Cool

Things are moving along. I should have this finished in a few days and I'll make sure to extensively photograph the finished product. Since this won't be in my possession in the future, I want to make sure I have a good record of it.

Brent, I'm almost as impressed with the photographic record you're making of this project as I am with the project itself. Of course, I don't get to see and handle that little gem, so I'm dependent on those well-done and highly detailed photos.

Oh, by the way, the manicurist from your barbershop called about your appointment to have your nails trimmed, and the FBI wants to thank you for providing such clear images of your fingerprints.

Wow, this is like watching "How It's Made" on the Science channel -- except that I like what's being made better than the stuff they show!

"Danger, Will Robinson! My sensors detect an intruder on the roof, with eight arctic herbivores!" Shocked

Congratulations, Brent! You've successfully constructed B-0.009, a nano-bot!

Amazon just called and said to have 1,000 of these ready by Thanksgiving.
