__________

Howdy. Just discovered this site a few days ago and was glad there's at least ONE place left for discussing older Sci-Fi! Very Happy

So, is there any love here for Raumpatrouille Orion? I didn't see it mentioned anywhere.

___Raumpatrouille Orion Ep 01 (English Subtitles)

___________

I saw the show a couple of years ago when doing research for a project I'm working on. The design and effects are pretty impressive, especially considering the period it was made.

I've only really started watching/listening to things like Space Patrol and Rocky Jones in the last few years since they were a bit before my time, but have enjoyed them very much!

Very impressive Tim! I had this confused with the other German series of a sort of puppet Space Patrol.

Actually, pretty good designs for the 50's!

I watched Space/Planet Patrol a couple of years ago and enjoyed it, but was surprised at how awful the characters were as "people". Very cold and indifferent attitudes at times.

I just finished most of the Gerry Anderson puppet shows a couple of months ago (first ever viewing) after getting hooked on Nebula 75, which I assume you all know about.

This series is amazing! Watch the first three minutes of the video below and you'll be begging for a DVD release with subtitles of the German dialog, and an English-dubbed 2nd audio track! Shocked

The FX and the sets are jaw-dropping. The Orion's bridge is incredible, and the the camera does a slow pan around the set that reveals futuristic designs which rival Forbidden Planet!

Note that the starship is a saucer —

— and that the bridge is circular, with the captain's chair in the center. Very Happy

The captain gazes at the approaching planet on the screen.

He and his first officer study the planet's surface as they descend during the landing. The camera moves closer, and the view on the screen shows that the ship is actually loosing altitude and moving horizontally across the surface!

Check the scene describe above at the 3:00 mark on the video.

I found the show while doing research and was immediately hooked, even without speaking German. Like Ikarie XB-1, the production design alone is fantastic! Orion apparently still has a lot of fans and still has related conventions in Germany, so it seems really odd that I'd never heard of it until a couple of years ago.

The really impressive thing is that the sets were done on a low budget using clothes irons, pencil sharpeners and clock pendulums as controls, and the ceiling is covered with plastic pitchers and drinking cups!

Ah, I see! Cool

However, we must bear in mind that these were obviously futuristic clothes irons, pencil sharpeners, clock pendulums, plastic pitchers, and drinking cups! Shocked
