This remains an astonishing movie to view to this day.

The production values are superb throughout.

You can see the design influence of 2001's style in the Space:1999 & Starlost TV shows.

Agreed. THE sci-fi movie of all time, for me. One of a kind.

As far as Space 1999 goes, I felt they went beyond homage to pure rip off.

In 1968 I had the good fortune to see 2001 in Cinerama in Washington D.C. They handed out beautiful full color booklets of scenes from the movie. There were 20 minute long intermissions in between the 3 "acts". The Cinerama version was much longer than the versions on DVD, Blu-ray or television release, that's why the intermissions were necessary to allow people to stretch, walk around and visit the snack bar. I understand that the Cinerama version film reels have deteriorated and are lost.

Looking at the Wikipedia page for the film, it seems that all the trimmed scenes were destroyed by Kubrick - but "In December 2010, Douglas Trumbull announced that Warner Bros. had located seventeen minutes of lost footage, "perfectly preserved", in a Kansas salt mine vault that originated from the post-premiere cuts. No immediate plans have been announced for the footage." They give 161 minutes as the running time at the time of the premiere, and 142 minutes as the regular version. I guess those timings don't include the music before, during the intermission, and after. With that kind of length, an intermission sounds logical - after all there'd not be time for any supporting feature, and the cinemas would have wanted some time during which they could sell ice cream and popcorn, etc...

I was at the premiere showing at the Cinerama theater in Washington D.C.

The Cinerama screen was 32 feet tall and 70 feet wide!

I sat in the 8th row!

From History of Cinerama:

The World Premiere of "2001-A Space Odyssey" was at the Uptown Cinerama Theater on April 2, 1968, in its original, nearly 3 hour version, plus a 20 minute intermission at both the one and two hour marks. Kubrick then trimmed 20 minutes from the movie, and was then shown for 51 more weeks at the theater.

I had read about the deleted footage and have never seen it. I heard that Kubrik destroyed all of it, but surely it may exist somewhere.

Has anyone an idea if it still exists? It would really be a treasure.

Welcome to All Sci-Fi, Mr. Green! Missing a bit of info in a previous post when you're brand new to a board is easy to do.

And I'm glad you asked the question, because frankly I missed Custer's post myself!

Please continue to enjoy All Sci-Fi. We're glad you joined.
Very Happy

I read your post Smile.

Unfortunately, I can't tolerate this pretentious boat anchor of a movie. 2001 elevated the idea of "style over substance" to an art. They need to lose footage...not add more. I even have trouble staying awake through the trailer.

It is on my "to watch" list, though its length makes it a bit difficult to schedule. I do suspect that it will seem a bit slow at times... but its influence has been huge, hasn't it? At the time it came out, with smoking in cinemas still normal, the cigarette smoke was, apparently, rather more aromatic than usual... no wonder the movie was called "the ultimate trip." That may well be the best way to experience it, though I don't think I'll do any experimenting that way! Cool

I have to agree with Brent, in that 2001 stretches out a thin plot that presents a lofty concept, and it tries to make the concept seem more "deep" than it really is, just by being so gorgeous to look at.

I'm not sure cutting it down, however, would help. The problem is that it gives us too little to think about — not that it gives us too much to see. Yes, the idea it presents is profound and important, but it isn't so profound that there's no room in the viewers head for anything other than "We are not alone."

I mean, that's about it, right? Or did I miss something?

Maybe 2001 needs to be viewed the way we watch Fantasia. Ironically, that's another movie which is popular with the pot crowd.
Cool

It also drove the nail in the coffin of "silver ships" (Brent's term). Sad
