Strange New Worlds Fan Fiction Contest Returns for 2016

Always wanted to tell your own Star Trek story about Kirk, Spock, Janeway, Picard, Uhura, Sisko, Major Kira, Archer, Tom Paris, Hoshi and/or the Borg, U.S.S. Enterprise, etc.? Well, your timing is coming, as Simon & Schuster, as part of its celebration of Star Trek's upcoming 50th anniversary, will bring back its popular Star Trek: Strange New Worlds fan fiction writing contest. The orignal Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was a yearly collection of Trek short stories published between 1998 and 2007, with the amateur writers' works chosen via an open submissions process. The new contest for 2106 will result in 10 grand prize winners who will have their stories published in the print and eBook formats as part of an all-new and official anthology from Simon & Schuster. Additionally, the two first prize winners will receive a free self-publishing package from Archway Publishing.

A deadline of January 15, 2016 has been set for submissions by U.S. residents only, and the winners will be announced on March 31, 2016, with the winning stories selected by a panel (to be named in the near future). And, to make the 2016 Star Trek: Strange New Worlds a fully fan-created package, fans will soon be asked to submit their artwork for cover consideration. Strange New Worlds Winners Announced
StarTrek.com Staff

The winners of the 2016 Strange New Worlds writing contest have been announced by Pocket Books, longtime publisher of Star Trek books. The contest has its roots in the original Star Trek: Strange New Worlds anthology, first published in 1998, and Pocket reestablished the Strange New Worlds writing contest in order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek.

Strange New Worlds was written by amateur writers selected through an open submissions process, with the winners — worked included in an annual collection of short stories set in the Star Trek universe. Those popular anthologies were published until 2007 and, among others, they launched the careers of such writers as Dayton Ward, Ilsa J. Bick, Scott Pearson, Geoffrey Thorne and William Leisner.

The 10 Grand Prize winners, picked from hundreds of submissions, will each receive a $1000 advance and will have their stories included in the all-new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2016 Edition Anthology, to be published in the digital-first format later this year.
