Here's a quick question, cause I only have a minute:

If the machine could make objects which apparently persist, like the deer and tiger and birds, why does the Id Monster vanish when he awakens? Why doesn't it keep stomping around? I mean, sure, his subconscious may not be going "get rid of them!" once he wakes, but why is that different than the other things he supposedly dreamed into existence?

Thoughts?

Because the Id Monster didn't need to be permanent. Morbius was a moral, kind man, he didn't want to hurt anyone. He saw the C-57-D crew as an annoyance and an imposition in his life. His Id saw them as a danger to be eliminated. Morbius didn't want them killed, his Id did. So while asleep, his Id had control. When he awakened, his Id lost control, and the Id Monster vanished as Morbius's waking mind took control.

It was only later in the movie that Morbius's anger and disappointment allowed the Id to take action while Morbius was awake.

Krel, that is a perfect explanation of the way Morbius and the machine interacted in the movie. I haven't encountered many people over the years who understood it that well. Very Happy

Thank you.

Before the old board went kablooey Bud posted pictures of the art work in the Morbius home. Here is the best view of the statue under the stairs that I can find.

Look behind Robby on the ground

Is that a cable he's trailing? Is he an getting extra charge from the jeep's atomic battery?

Is this crewman stealing the cable?

(No school today as it's Canadian Thanksgiving and most of the teachers have relatives there.

Oh my goodness, I weep each time I think about the loss of that post, Eadie. I spent an entire day researching that post and composing it -- loving every minute of it. I wish I'd saved it so I could post it here, but alas . . . 'tis gone forever . . .

In answer to your questions --

Although Robby did have a plug in his heel that allowed the crew to hook him up for the scenes in which he didn't have to move around, that line behind Robby is actually a seam in the floor that's supposed to be covered up with dirty, but as we all know, they were real sloppy with details in this movie and didn't care about little things like . . .

. . . I'm sorry, I can't even type that in jest. Very Happy Yes, they made a few mistakes (like having to cover up the end of the cyclorama with that gray partition Butch found under the C-57-D in one scene), but mostly they were eager beavers when it came getting stuff right in Forbidden Planet. Very Happy

Apparently the third assistant director in charge of dirt distribution and seam concealment fell down on the job. He was probably fired for that.

However, that crewmen in the picture you posted was indeed stealing the cable, and I heard he too was fired from the production because he got caught on camera when he . . .

Darn, I did it again. Can't keep a straight face today. Laughing

Actually, there are two several lines there. I suspect that's the path the tractor followed.

Interesting idea, but no -- the tracor goes off at a 90 degree angle to that line, and there are more than two tires on the tractor -- all very thick.

And here's that pesky line (with a gray line parallel to it to help you see it), running perpendicular to the tractor's path.

Hey, that line might have been scratched in the dirt to help Frankie (Robbie's operator) walk in the right direction! It sure doesn't look much like a crack, as I stated earlier.

These are the only art in the Morbius residence that I could find.

The entrance patio fish.

The terrace fish.

Statue under the stairs.

The side table sculptures.

The decorative obelisks at the end tables of one of the sofas.

The objects behind Commander Adams.

The one at the edge is listed in the Sascha Brastoff Collectibles Encyclopedia as the master casting for Meeting of Spines, which wasn't ready in time for filming. (I don't trust that book as there are other mistakes in it.)

The statue on the plinth is named Mankind Triumphant.

The plinth itself is a Danish Modern design that can sometimes bought from IKEA.

The multi-lights on each side of the door to the study are 1/2 of a type of chandelier originally called Bauhaus Modern but called a Sputnick lamp after 1957.

The house side of the study.

The sculpture on the wall is called Gilded Peacock.

The sculpture at the right edge is called Fish School. I couldn't find a clear picture. The table was used in MGM movies during the 1930s to the 1960s. The tunnel side of the study.

The wall lights on both sides were used in Baushaus Modern movie theaters. The globe is an expensive celestial sphere globe with the inner globe of the Earth removed.

Not part of the movie, but you had posted.

I hope this helps.

Please note that none of Eadie's Photobucket jpegs were displaying until today when I found a way to save them from PB to my computer and then put them on my Imgur account! Very Happy

The post above is the second of her posts I've managed to repair. I'll work on more of them in the days ahead.

Great job, young lady. You nailed almost every piece I discovered in that lost, lamented post about the Morbius home decor. I do have a slightly closer shot of the pieces on what I jokingly called the "bar" in Morbius' study.

The piece on the right was identified by Butch in a reply to my post on the old All Sci-Fi, but I don't remember the name. (sigh . . . )

The gold wall-mounted piece (and it's duplicate on the facing wall) were also identified by Butch. He said they were lighting fixtures like the ones used in a great old movie palace in your state (Washington, for the rest of you folks, Very Happy).

The only piece you missed was the artificial flowers in a pot filled with sand on the table that held the "beamer".

During my enjoyable day-long research and composition of my Home and Garden style post of the Morbius house decor, I noticed that Robby placed the flowers there when the monkey launched it's attack on the fruit bowl, just before Adams and Ostrow arrived for their afternoon visit.

Your kind attempt to help me resurrect some of the info in that lost post also reminded me that if we keep our eye on that table throughout the movie, the decorations change periodically.

It starts out like this during the first visit to the house —

— and then, the next day, it's changed by Robby to this.

The fact that we actually get to see Robby making changes to the decor (putting out flowers during the daylight hours, replacing them with something else after dark) just tickled me pink, because it was a little glimpse into the normal routines of the Morbius home, and the way our favorite robot butler adjusted the "mood" of the house for different times of day!

Later we see that the flowers have been removed (after sunset), and the table is almost bare of decorations at this moment in the story —

— but the next evening, after the Id attack, Robby has placed these pieces back on the table.

All this thought and preparation for a fictional home in a movie — it just amazes me. Very Happy

PS: But what the heck is this? Shocked

Look earlier in the movie. Doctor Morbius waves his hand over it to activate and de-activate the shutters.

Not really. I just follow the advice given to me.

OBSERVE.

CAREFULLY.

AND TAKE LOTS OF NOTES.

From my Godfather, Butch.

Here is a picture of the living room set with the shutters closed which shows those obelisks (I hope I spelled that correctly) and the coffee cups.

A publicity picture that I found in my Godfather's collection. Doctor Morbius sure looks a bit worried.

Those are two terrific pictures, Miss Eadie! Thanks. The one of Morbius would be perfect to use for a drawing.

I've never been able to find my own copy of the photo I used for the drawing below -- and I've never seen it anywhere else!

I THINK I Solved A Mystery!

In the battle with the Id, Lieutenant Farman says "Grey, Strong — Set up a cross-fire on those rocks!" and it looks as if the crewmen have to run past the fence posts WITHOUT getting blasted. How? Look at the extreme left of this picture:

Could the rocks mentioned be part of the one the crewman is sitting on?

I've never been able to tell which rocks he was talking about myself, Eadie, but in your screen grab I see two crewmen sitting on rocks. Very Happy
