Every time the powers-that-be want to turn Star Trek into a cash cow that everybody likes, it ends up being something that Trekkers don't like.

Why? Simple.

When Star Trek is done right and well, a small specialized segment of the population get what they want. You know, the geeks. The nerds. The misfits.

In other words, the kind of people who invent software and design spacecraft and become billionaires by using their brains. Those folks.

But when Paramount decides it needs to increase the number of people who like Star Trek, they just make movies for people other than Trekkers. You know, the average folks.

There's nothing wrong with being average. Average folks have lots of money to spend on movie tickets. And that, unfortunately, is all the people who own Star Trek care about.

Dammit.

Star Trek Actors Seen Around Vancouver, Still No Official Word From Paramount
by Brian Drew, TrekMovie

Several cast members of Star Trek Beyond are now in Vancouver, enjoying the city and preparing for principal photography to begin....

Saldana's tweet is the latest in a series of social media posts and media reports that show members of the Star Trek Beyond cast reporting to Vancouver to begin production of their third Star Trek film. While there has been no official announcement from Paramount Pictures or Bad Robot, sources seem to indicate that principal photography will commence this Thursday, June 25.

Pace beginning to pick up
After a long stretch with little apparent activity, the arrival of the cast in Vancouver is a welcome sight to many fans, who have been anxiously awaiting word about the film. Things got rolling last week, when Karl Urban was seen arriving.....

There have also been reports of the cast milling about town and enjoying themselves. Vancouver blog Vancity Buzz spotted Zoe Saldana with her husband Marco Perego, who were on their way to see Jurassic World on Father's Day.....

The site also reports that Simon Pegg was seen at the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival on Friday night......

More to come?
Any official news about the film has been hard to come by, possibly owing to a very rushed pre-production schedule which saw the first draft of the script only get completed recently. Due to the compressed schedule, it's entirely possible we won't see much in the way of news until the film is already in principal photography. As always, we'll bring you any information as we get it. Star Trek Beyond is scheduled for release July 8, 2016.

Chris Pine & Zachary Quinto Sign For Star Trek 4
By Rob Keyes, Screenrant

After J.J. Abrams jumped ship to help Disney and Lucasfilm bring back the Star Wars live-action film franchise (after successfully doing the same for Paramount's Star Trek), additional director and writer changes during development of Star Trek 3 caused some production delays. What was initially planned to be the beginning of principal photography on what's believed to be titled Star Trek Beyond earlier this year is all in the past -- and now Paramount Pictures has properly begun production on the Star Trek Into Darkness followup in Vancouver this week.

But that's not the only exciting news for Trekkies this week. Building off the other exciting news that Paramount is looking to fandom for ideas on bringing back Star Trek to TV, we also have news that the current slate of Star Trek movies will most certainly not end as a trilogy. Two of its core characters, the iconic duo of Captain Kirk and Spock, will be back for Star Trek 4.

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek and there's no better way to celebrate the significance and success of the forward-thinking franchise than to release a movie, seeing as development on a TV series of any kind is ongoing (and there's currently no end in sight).

We've learned from THR that part of the negotiation process for Star Trek 3 saw its core stars get pay raises in exchange for signing on for Star Trek 4. Specifically, Chris Pine, who reportedly only earned $600,000 for 2009's Star Trek based on a contract he signed in 2007 one which saw him and castmates earning only minimal raises for the sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness. Pine was an unknown commodity and an unproven star at the time, along with most of the cast, but has since gone on to serve as a lead in other projects similar to Zoe Saldana, who has two other massive franchises getting multiple sequels (in Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy).

For Star Trek 3, Pine was initially going to earn $3 million according to court documents THR dug up from the actors lawsuit with his old agency. However, that has since doubled to $6 million in exchange for him signing on for a fourth Trek movie alongside co-star Zachary Quinto. The goal for the studio is to keep the most important two characters from the original series on to build around for another movie (should the series continue -- which it will).

Quinto said it best while chatting with Hitfix two years ago, during the promotional push for Into Darkness:

The history of these two characters and the dynamic between this duo is legendary. It's sort of the heart of the franchise.

The exact numbers are not known but the report explains that the Star Trek Beyond budget has jumped up $10-15 million as raises were granted for the film's core cast. If Trek 3 successfully does something new for the film franchise and pushes it into a new direction (new worlds and new species are promised!), we can only assume the crew will return for another (and more!). After all, these are iconic roles played by iconic actors decades earlier and it would be a shame to see characters walk away from that Unless it's John Cho's Hikaru Sulu of course who I'd like to see take command of an Abrams-universe USS Excelsior (just like George Takei did back in the day). There's your TV idea, Paramount. Call me.

Star Trek 3 will arrive in theaters on July 8, 2016.

At last! Set photos for Star Trek Beyond Is that a Xindi skunk!? *SPOILERS*
by Jared Whitley, TrekMovie

New photos and video from Star Trek Beyond have (finally!) made their way to the Internet.

....And removed by Paramount !!!

The pictures show Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, newcomer Sofia Boutella, and Anton Yelchin shooting in front of a green screen in Vancouver, Canada. Screen Crush speculates they're on top of a spaceship, but it could also be any other kind of vehicle, a building, or indeed an orbital mining array.

While Pegg is clearly wearing the standard redshirt Starfleet uniform, Pine is wearing a very space-age jacket/pants combo that makes him look like a cross between a Cub Scout and Starlord from Guardians of the Galaxy. If Carol Marcus were returning for this film, she could assure me that Jim Kirk was never a Cub Scout, but she's not instead we have Boutella as a new female lead.

With her white make-up, she is some kind of new alien species we've never seen before. She has no antennae, so we know she's not an Aenar.

The released press materials are the first real glimpse we've gotten from the production, which has switched creative staff while the 50th anniversary hurtles towards us at warp speed.

In addition to Pine, Yelchin, Pegg and Boutella, the film will also star Idris Elba (as the film's presumed villain), Joe Taslim, Lydia Wilson, and returning Trek stars Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Deep Roy.

Star Trek Beyond opens July 8, 2016.

Okay, the ponytail clinched it for me.

("What is love? Five feet of heaven in a ponytail...")

And leather-slappin' fast-draw phaser holsters. Yeah, boy!

(Can you believe my spelling checker doesn't recognize "phaser"?)

Why Star Trek Beyond Is Filming Scenes In Dubai
By Nick Romano, CINEMABLEND

The cast of the Enterprise is heading into uncharted territories of deep space in Star Trek Beyond, and that means exotic locations will be needed. After filming in Vancouver, Canada, production moved to Dubai, where they will film for 13 days around the city and in studio space. What will this location serve? As the cast and crew teased during a press conference, it's the world of tomorrow.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Pine (Captain Kirk), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Anton Yelchin (Chekov), Karl Urban (Bones), and Idris Elba (the unannounced villain of the film) will be setting up shop for scenes that include 200 extras. Star Trek Beyond producer Jeffrey Chernov said during the press conference that they came to Dubai searching for the future, and they found it. ....

Pine described the locale as "futureland," an environment that looks like "what tomorrow would be." Meanwhile, actor and script co-writer Pegg said the Star Trek series tries to imagine a conflict-free world, while Elba say Dubai as "a gateway to new cultures."

Dubai has served as the filming location for films like Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Tom Cruise climbed up the side of the world's tallest tower) and George Clooney's Syriana, while the United Arab Emirates played host recently to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. J.J. Abrams, who directed the previous two Star Trek films, used the Abu Dhabi desert to film the planet of Jakku....

Star Trek Beyond trailer to premiere with Star Wars on December 17

After weeks of speculation and rumor, today it was announced that the first trailer for the next installment of the Star Trek franchise will bow on December 18.

The speculation that something was brewing started last month, when STB's director Justin Lin intimated that he was burning the midnight oil working on something Trek-related.

Placing the trailer in front of a film as eagerly anticipated as Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a major coup for Paramount. After keeping unusually quiet about the film, the studio is now making a big a splash as they can as they begin a publicity campaign that will culminate with the film's release in July.

There's no word on when the trailer will make its web debut, but it's probably safe to assume it will be on the same day as the theatrical premiere.

Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22, 2016.

They just posted the next trailer for Star Trek Beyond.

We were promised that this one would actually be the star of the 5 year mission. But with Justin Lin in control it appears to have turned into another Kung-Fu-ooey film.

Entertainment Tonight!'s Star Trek Beyond set visit:

I guess that the actors don't follow the publicity.

Bones (Karl Urban) says that they can't show the new uniforms. But someone has -- see the above posts!

The ingenious way Star Trek Beyond is making sure its script doesn't leak online

Here's a nice article which was posted yesterday (Jan 18th, 2016) about Star Trek Beyond, with three embedded videos of an ET on-set interview with some of the actors.

Chris Pine drools over the new weapons locker, Karl Urban makes no bones about how much he likes the new "retro TOS" uniforms, and John Cho walks around that spectacular bridge set with the interviewer and gives us closeups of the helmsman's station that are better than anything we'll ever get in the movie.

I'm really starting to look forward to this one, although the middle of the three videos has two hyperactive, fast-talking guys who narrate an analysis of the trailer and make it painfully clear that the Enterprise is going to be totally trashed (again) in the new movie, and frankly I'm sick to death of that idea.

I didn't like it the first time, and by my count this is the fourth!
Very Happy

He says this wearing a uniform, sitting on the bridge set, then grins into the camera and laughs.

That's what I was hinting at, Wayne.

Unsuccessfully.
