The 2 flight control boards from Forbidden Planet showing that if that they are not identical, then they are close:

A close-up:

A close-up of the picture at Chicago Space Port:

A VERY peculiar picture. Robby doesn't seem to have his rotating ring assemblies; is standing on an old fashioned airplane boarding stair; the C-57-D appears to have crash landed; the people on 'parade' seem to be either WW I British, French or German sailors!

Can anyone spot any other peculiarities?

That 'crashed saucer' in the background of the picture, does not appear to be the C-57-D saucer to me. Its bottom-hull profile appears too rounded. And the saucers perimeter appears too close to the base of its upper dome.

Also... there would be no need for a boarding stairs if Robby exited the crashed saucer. The C-57-D's entry/exits were on its bottom - which would be at ground-level on the 'crashed saucer' here. We know of none above that level. Although, I would have put one in its upper dome - to allow EVA activity in space, without need to lower a landing leg-ramp.

Also... the boarding stairs in the foreground would have to be moved far from the 'crashed saucer' in the background, before the picture was made. It makes no sense for Robby to remain atop of it, during its distant moving - he could have been tipped off the top, if the mobile boarding stairs hit a bump in any un-level ground surface.

My summation of the picture is this... The 'crashed saucer' is not the C-57-D. And if Robby exited the 'crashed saucer', he then walked across the field, and then climbed an out-of-use, but ready available, boarding stairs to address the public.

If Robby exited a 'crashed saucer', which is not the C-57-D... that is another untold story - as to how he came to be on it. Or perhaps... it is not 'the' Robby of "Forbidden Planet" - but rather a later, mass-produced Robby 'series', duplicate of him. Wink

Robby's "feet" are much too large to simply "walk down" steps designed for humans. He would have to be moved to a level entry walkway.

Robby's address:

Greetings humans of Earth. I have been sent by a cook on Altair IV to manufacture and distribute 100,000 metric tons of needed medicine. I believe you humans call this medicine "HOOTCH".

Robby's line:

"Hey, you guys lied! I can't see my house from up here!"

I don't care what the Colonel says. Wonder Woman's going to be very angry!

Poor Robby looks like somebody patted him down with a powder puff. How the heck did he get so dusty? It's disgraceful . . .

I don't think that the shine is dust. I think that is glare from the camera's flashbulb. Remember, Robby had a metallic gunmetal paint job.

I think you're mistaken, David. The camera flash obviously did cause the reflections like the one indicated below --

-- but areas like Robby's chest panel are clearly covered in dust.

In the picture below, Robby is spotlessly clean. Notice the difference.

Compare the chest panel and the area around it in these two close-ups from the two pictures above.

__

And think Wayne is right. They got Robby dirty in those outdoor scenes, and then nobody bothered to clean him up. Sad

Robby's electrostatic precipitators (Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrostatic_precipitator ) weren't working. (They keep him clean!) They were probably overloaded. The L. A. smog just wasn't washed off.

I am not going to say definitively that it is only glare, although I do believe glare is the major factor. But you really can't compare the two photos. The FP photo looks to have been taken using the lighting setup for the scene, which was lit to eliminate as much glare as possible. While the IB photo looks to have been taken with a camera flash, most probably a flashbulb, with little care or no care to the lighting composition. Just look at the glare on Robby's dome, the shadows behind him and the walls which are washed out. A lot, and I mean A LOT, of light was pumped into that photo.

So, I think I will stand behind my statement that it is glare, not dust.

David.

By gum, you make a damn good case, David. I'm not nearly as convinced as I was before. Robby had a smudgy look all through The Invisible Boy.

I think maybe your right that the harsh lighting and the lack of polish Robby displays in the movie might be a better explanation than the idea that he was covered in dust and nobody bother to brush him off a little before taking a publicity still.
