Now that you're an interociter expert, can tell us exactly where this part of the Interociter is located?

According to my dad, Pye-rate, it's an old TV wiring schematic.

Nice matte paintings.

If you look closely you can see the saucer at the extreme right!

I had never studied these frames closely before. They tend to look like Dr. Seuss illustrations on closer inspection. Thanks for posting them, Eadie.

The shuttle tube in the first painting sweeps back around the explosion and up to the top of the tower in the background. The second painting is a reverse angle from the first, showing the view from the shuttle tube terminal at the top of that tower, back down to the saucer platform. But the painter sure goofed the perspective on the saucer. He painted it with the underside showing, whereas we should be seeing only its upper surfaces.

My lord, Wayne — I never realized that the tower the Monitor was in could be seen in the background from the saucer, and vice versa!

When you described the way the shuttle tube swept away from the saucer landing station, I realized for the first time in 59 years that both the saucer and the Monitor complex could be seen in both shots from reversed perspectives!

Wow!

In the last photo, the saucer is just hovering in the air connected to the elelvator. I wonder if that is from the original scenes.

I read in a book back in the 80s, that Universal didn't like the original Metaluna scenes and so had them reshot. They were directed by Jack Arnold as a favor to the studio. The book didn't say if they reused the original sets, or had new ones made.

David.

That is a choice piece of info, David. Thanks. I'd love to have a great big book about this movie — and many others — packed full of facts and pictures we've never seen before.

None of the movies we've loved for decades have ever really been given the kind of deluxe treatment they deserve in terms of books and articles that reveal the effort and talent it took to make them.

And every year more and more of the people who could provide this information pass away, and we miss our chance.

Damn.

I found this truly horrible poster over on the Classic Horror Film Board, and I pointed out the fact that Ruth is obviously enjoying the attentions of the Mutant!

She's rubbing her backside against the Mutants you-know-what!

It occurred to me that This Island Earth has other subtle clues that suggest it isn't as wholesome as we've always assumed.

For example, these so-called "conversion tubes" are nothing more than bondage devices for Peeping Toms!

"And now, my Dear, you will stand there while I gaze at you through these tubular windows I designed. Yes . . . yes . . . keep breathing hard like that. So exciting, my pet."

"Don't give him the satisfaction, Ruth! Hold your breath!"

It looks to me like they're trying out some moves on the disco floor.

What the Metaluna Mutant (mutant-ant?) should have looked like:

(These next two were found by Eadie.)

Twins separated at birth?

Who the Martians in Mars Attacks! really wanted:

Good work, Butch. Thank Eadie for her assistance, too! I love that version of the mutant.

That mutant is so smartly dressed, I wonder if it wasn't meant to be a new version of Exeter (au naturel)? Shocked

If the saucer is parked at a height lower than the tower top, then, as you suggest, it should appear below the horizon line and its upper surfaces the what's visible. But just how high up IS it? The amount of diminishing on the tube reaching up to it implies it's pretty high.

This view shows the towers in the background higher than the saucer. The sweep of the shuttle tube from the foreground, up around to the top level of the tower in the background confirms that this is the tower from which we're seeing the saucer in the other shot.

I don't know if this hodgepodge will be the least bit helpful, but just for fun I've tried to illustrate the various levels of the platforms that are so popular in Metalunan architecture, and a vanishing point that helps us visualize their relative heights.

This will only be of interest to retired folks like me and Wayne, people who have way too much spare time and who labor under the delusion that they're intelligent.

If you fall into that category, dive right in. Very Happy

Using the jpeg above, I drew a few dozen colored lines because I'm apparently obsessed with them. Very Happy

Obviously the big platform below the saucer is the lowest level. I accented it and the distant platforms with green circles. The terminus of the transport tube at the monitor complex (high in the background) is at the highest platform.

Notice that the big platform below the saucer is on the same plane as the lowest platform circled in green on the Monitor building, so the parallel red lines (joined by orange perpendicular lines) are on that plane too.

The long orange line comes from the vanishing point and crosses the underside of the saucer. It also passes the left edge of the second platform circled in green -- which means the saucer and that platform are on the same plane.

The blue line goes from the vanishing point to the platform two-thirds of the way up the monitor's building and then goes over the saucer. Obviously it's higher. No surprise there. Very Happy

And the highest red line intersects the top platform in the Monitor building and then passes high above the saucer.

Obviously the Monitor building's highest level is well above the saucer.

And yet from the angle with the Monitor building in the foreground and the saucer in the far distance, the saucer has been painted incorrectly. Even though it's shown at a lower elevation, we see the bottom instead of the top, and both the platform and the building that supports it are entirely missing!

But I fixed it with Paint.net and a paste-up from a shot of the model saucer from a space scene. Very Happy

And there's the full scene with the new saucer.
