20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (1916) turns 100 this year. Disney's version was released on December 24, 1954. The date MIGHT have been chosen because this version was also released on December 24th!

An amazing movie that set the trend for big budget sci-fi films. Great info at Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20,000_Leagues_Under_the_Sea_%281916_film%29

Several lengths and quality of the the complete film can be found on YouTube at —

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=20%2C000+Leagues+Under+The+Sea+1916 These times vary between 1:38:43 and 1:40:31. Wikipedia lists it as 1:45:00.

The movie combines elements from The Mysterious Island

with original material.

Screen shots of this version's Nautilus:

This is the clearest shot I could find. Notice that this Nautilus is also riveted (as is the Harper Goff designed Disney version) whereas the original Verne design was smooth-skinned as are modern subs (in the book it was welded, NOT riveted).

The last shot looks like it might be from an illustration plunked in the photoplay edition of Jules Verne's novel (pretty sure the photoplay version, at least, has one similar). A real oddity, that one was. It used scenes from the film as illustrations but followed Verne's original story!

I like 20,000 Leagues o.k. but, once the novelty of the underwater photography wears off, I've found that it plods along too much. Just one fella's opinion.

Looked for that photoplay novel but couldn't find it. Meanwhile, I totally forgot about this footage of legenary underwater cameraman J. E. Williamson doing his thing as shown on a 1988 National Geographic Show:

An exclusive for the folks at All Sci-Fi!
