The Mickey Mouse Club initially ran on ABC from 1955 to 1959. It was also featured in segments of Walt Disney Presents (ABC 1958 - 1961) and as specials on Walt Disney Presents The Wonderful World Of Color (NBC 1961 - 1967). [The Wonderful World Of Color — without the Walt Disney Presents — was used from 1967 to 1969 AFTER Walt's death.]

Although this picture would normally be in the joke thread, I posted this here so as to start a conversation of our favorite club.

The Mickey Mouse Club never really caught on for me. I was accustomed to (or conditioned by) local small town "TV club" shows that offered membership to any kid viewer simply for sending in their name and address. The MMC, however, seemed to be restricted to celebrity or "talented" kids. I never connected with it and quickly lost interest in watching the show.

We did get the Mickey Mouse Club in Britain - looking up an old black & white opening song on YouTube, it did seem very familiar, particularly Donald Duck shouting his name into it...

Fortunately, I am a little younger than you guys and I have no memory of the Mickey Mouse Club. Twisted Evil

I did love the Adventure of Superman (in reruns).

EDITED: My wife said that she remembers the Mickey Mouse Club. Now she is singing the song. Smile

I was a huge fan of The Mickey Mouse Club...and I had a big crush on Annette (surprise).

However, I was a victim of that odd phenomena that only existed in the pre-internet age of B&W TV. I saw this show in Canada at a time when we only had 2 television stations. I was unaware that I was watching shows that were about 10 years old.

This was not uncommon in Canada when (before cable), we could not access U.S. network programming directly. Shows like THE MUNSTERS would premier here as new shows long after they had ended their American TV run.

When all TV was in Black and White (for me) and, lacking any other connection to the world of pop culture, I did not know that the shows I was watching in 1966 were likely from 1956. Annette was already married (and, in fact, had been in Winnipeg some years earlier for the premier of BEACH PARTY). But I loved all of it...especially The Hardy Boys segments.

I can even play the MMC theme on the harmonica Smile.

I was unhappy when "Adventures of Superman" ended. The continuity announcer said that it was being replaced by "Cannonball," which sounded a bit superheroic... but of course, it turned out to be rather more mundane.

My memories of the Mickey Mouse Club don't go beyond the opening theme song, so I have no idea if they were re-edited for Britain. Did we get to see Annette Funicello and the other Club members? I have no idea...

In 1955 I was seven years old, and the Mickey Mouse Club was the reason my father would stand on the front porch at 4:55 each day, put his index finger and pinky at the corners of his mouth, and then cut loose with a four-note whistle that meant "Come home right now!"

I could hear that shrill sonic summons from a quarter mile away, and it was the signal for me and my friends to shout a quick "Gotta go! See ya later!" to each other and then race home to sit on the floor in front of the TV from 5:00 to 6:00 while we watched Jimmy and Roy and Cubby and oh-my-God that cute little Annette dazzle us with singing and dancing and comedy skits.

______

I don't remember as much about the Hardy Boys as I do about Spin and Marty. Thanks to that series, nobody would ever fool me with that old "Snipe Hunting" gag the way they did poor rich-kid Marty!

That show also taught me to always get any pair of new jeans real dirty just as fast (and as often) as I could, so that Mom would have to wash them repeatedly and they'd get broken in properly.

That was the next best way to do it, but what I really wanted to do was the official procedure I saw in the episode where the boys on the ranch took charge of a new pair of Marty's jeans and put them through three minutes of horrible torture.

The jeans were given a whirlwind tour of the ranch as they were assaulted by different groups of boys in widely spaced locations. The ranch activities of each separate group were interrupted when somebody called out, "New jeans comin'!" The group that received the jeans would abuse them in some special manner and then throw them to the next group in a sort of "assembly line" whose goals was to transform the disgustingly new garment into a pair of seasoned jeans suitable for a boy to wear in public.

The processes included being soaked in the horse trough, dragged along the ground, stretched in a tug-a-war contest, and beaten severely with a baseball bat.

Levi's Jeans should convert that scene into a commercial. Very Happy

The video below is a nice tribute to Spin and Marty, with an interview with Tim Considine and David Stollery, who were close friends both before and after the series.

David Stollery went on to become an award winning car designer who created (among other things) this sporty little model, the Arex, just as a showcase for his talent.

Now that's what I call an American success story.
Very Happy

The Mickey Mouse Club Sing-A-Long!

The original version of the main theme is longer than most people remember. Here it is (in glorious TechnoColor). The part we remember starts about at 1:54.

Monday is Fun With Music!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3Qd8krkjGE

Tuesday is Guest Star Day!

Wednesday is Anything Can Happen Day!

Thursday is Circus Day!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D42Czi8TMSY

Friday Is Talent Round-Up Day!

There were two versions. The 1st season:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8KmmgJQfc0

The 2nd season — which is the one we remember:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLdoQd5X84M

Jiminy Cricket Presents was a series of different themed shorts, all educational.

I'm No Fool series

Each I'm No Fool short is less than 10 minutes in runtime and begins and ends with the theme song, "I'm No Fool", with the lyrics to the closing number reworked to include the lessons taught during the short. Jiminy presents each hypothetical situation by drawing chalk outlines of the primary participants (usually a stereotypical, Family Circus-esque American boy) on a black board. The drawings then come to life and get into various questionable situations, with Jiminy steering them in the right direction.

I'm No Fool With A Bicycle (10/06/55)
I'm No Fool With Fire (12/01/55)
I'm No Fool As A Pedestrian (10/08/56)
I'm No Fool with Water (11/15/56)
I'm No Fool Having Fun (12/15/56)
I'm No Fool in a Car (1957)
I'm No Fool in an Emergency (1957)
I'm No Fool in Unsafe Places (1957)
I'm No Fool in Unsafe Places II (1957)
I'm No Fool on Wheels (1957)
I'm No Fool with Safety at School (1957)
I'm No Fool with Electricity (1973

This Is You series

Similarly to the I'm No Fool series above, Jiminy Cricket teaches children about the human body.

You - the Human Animal (10/20/55)
You - and Your Five Senses (12/15/55)
You - and Your Eyes (11/07/56)
You - and Your Food (4/18/57)
You - the Living Machine (5/01/57)
You - and Your Ears (10/03/57)
You - and Your Sense of Touch (1964)
You - and Your Sense of Smell and Taste (4/01/77)

The Nature of Things series

Jiminy Cricket teaches children about the animals of nature, in a similar manner to the I'm No Fool series. This series also had live-action footage lifted from True-Life Adventures, this series was also known as Animal Autobiography, generally these had only intro sequence featuring Jiminy Cricket, the rest was live-action of real animals.

Animal Champions (10/13/55)
Cansdale (10/27/55)
The Black Bear (12/28/55)
The Prairie Dog (12/29/55)
The King of Beasts (12/30/55)
The Camel (1/26/56)
The Bee (10/31/56)
The Elephant (11/01/56)
Alaskan Sled Dog (11/02/56)

These used the intro without Jiminy but Cliff Edwards (voice of Jiminy) narrated:

The Mountain Lion (12/24/56)
The Beaver (1962)
The Buffalo (1962)
The Coyote (1962)
The Giraffe (1963)
The Horse (1964)

Encyclopedia series

Jiminy Cricket teaches children how to spell, also in a similar manner to the I'm No Fool series.

Cork and Wheelwright (11/01/56)
Milk (11/26/56)
Tuna (12/27/56)
Railroads (2/19/57)
Steel (4/26/57)
Give the United Way (1956)
Curiosity (1956)

Following Mickey Mouse Club Newsreel Specials were aired under Encyclopedia banner but didn't feature Jiminy Cricket or Cliff Edwards.

Uranium Hunt (10/30/57)
Cormorant Fishing (12/27/57)
Roaring Midgets (1/20/5Cool
Shipyards (1/20/5Cool
The Lobster Story (1/20/5Cool
Shooting the Rapids (1/20/5Cool

Many of these can be found on YouTube.

BONUS for Bud; a color cast photo of The Adventures of Spin and Marty the firstof three serials:

The show ended a year after I was born, but I do remember watching it in reruns. We had 45s of songs from the show, they were made of colored plastic. For some reason, the only song I remember is the Gold Doubloons song. I guess it was my favorite.

Come to think of it, Jiminy Cricket's "Encyclopedia" jingle was where I learned how to spell "encyclopedia". Even now, whenever I have occasion to write that word, I spell it to the tune in my head.

Damn! It STILL won't let me edit my post!

The Thursday song posted for Circus Day! is the wrong one. It's one of the Disneyland Records dubbed over the video. Here is the correct link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D42Czi8TMSY

Those records were done slower deliberately so that the little one (US??) could sing-a-long.
