Anton Yelchin, who portrayed Ensign Chekov in the current ST "reboots", was pinned by his own car at his home.

A shock, indeed. The lunchtime BBC television news did include this, with a clip from his first Star Trek movie, him on a red carpet, a FaceBook comment from the Sulu to his Mr Chekov, and even a report from the scene of the accident. What a dispiriting way to go... Sad

Eadie (in an effort to cheer me up) pointed out that he is the current top contender for the Darwin Award.

She said "Who in their right mind works on a car where it can roll backwards on you?"

Quote:
In April, Fiat Chrysler recalled 1.1m vehicles worldwide over the risk they could roll away after drivers exit. The issue had been linked to 41 injuries, it said. Fiat Chrysler, which owns Jeep, said it was extending its "deepest sympathies" to Yelchin's family and friends.
"The company will be conducting a thorough investigation of this tragic incident. It is premature to speculate on its cause at this time," it said in a statement.

So perhaps it's not a "Darwin Awards" kind of thing, where careless people remove themselves prematurely from the gene pool with the result that future generations will be less likely to pull life-threatening stunts. If you own that particular model, best to take care when parking on any steep slope!

Word on the radio, is that he ignored the recall notice. So if true, still a potential Darwin Awards contender.

ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS set the emergency brake when parking. That goes double, when you are parking on an incline.

David.

Gentlebeings:

When a recall is made, your working on the vehicle does NOT count.

ALL recalls MUST be made by an authorized dealer so that it can be documented to the NTSB.

By failing to do this (by ignoring the recall) he took any onus upon himself.

He wasn't trying to fix it himself, Butch. That was part of Eadie's levity.

From today's Obituary page of The Times:

Quote:
Anton Yelchin's parents fled the Soviet Union in the hope of securing a better life for their infant son. Successful figure skaters, they embraced the American dream and by the time their only child was 12 he was already a Hollywood star, sharing top billing with Anthony Hopkins in the Stephen King adaptation Hearts of Atlantis.

Versatile and prolific, Yelchin had a smooth transition from child star to adult, appearing with Robert Downey Jr and Mel Gibson and playing the recurring role of Chekov in the recent Star Trek series of films with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Simon Pegg.

Sadly his career was cut short at the age of 27-- the same age as Jimi Hendrix, Brian Jones, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, to name a few. Unlike the other members of what is darkly known as the 27 club, Yelchin's death came about not from drugs, drink or suicide, but as a result of a freak accident. His Jeep rolled down his drive in Los Angeles and trapped him against a gate. His body was found by friends when he failed to show up for rehearsals the next day.

Anton Viktorovich Yelchin was born in Leningrad (now St Petersburg) in 1989, at the end of the Soviet era. His parents Irina Korina and Viktor Yelchin were stars of the Leningrad Ice Ballet, but as Jews they felt persecuted. Though they qualified for the 1972 Winter Olympics, the pair were prevented from taking part by the Soviet authorities.

I was born there and moved when I was six months old, Yelchin told one interviewer. So when people approach me and say Oh, you're Russian? I say, No, I'm American.

His parents were given refugee status by the US government and they moved to Los Angeles where they worked as ice skating coaches.

Blessed with a mop of curly hair and angelic good looks, the young Yelchin was given acting classes and was soon approached to appear in movies and television. When he was ten he made an impression on the long-running medical drama series ER, as a boy who learns that both his parents have died from injuries sustained in a car accident.

The year after he not only played alongside Morgan Freeman in Along Came a Spider but also co-starred with Anthony Hopkins in an adaptation of the Stephen King novel Hearts in Atlantis, about a troubled young boy who befriends a loner who has special powers. His sensitive performance brought him glowing reviews and several awards.

Despite his precocity, Yelchin always seemed well-grounded and he worked steadily through childhood and adolescence, graduating to young adult roles with impressive ease. Described by friends as open and intellectually curious, he took his acting seriously. He would make detailed notes for himself on roles, and mix small independent projects with mainstream movies.

He had one of the main roles in Terminator Salvation and acted alongside Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster in The Beaver, a film about alcoholism. He first took on the role of the young navigator Chekov in the 2009 reboot of Star Trek and reprised it in the sequels Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond, which will be released later this year.

Before he was cast in the first film he had never seen a single episode of the original show. After winning the role, he went off and watched them all. Chekov was Russian and had been introduced into the original series in the middle of the Cold War, although he was played by the Chicago-born Walter Koenig. Yelchin thought the character was the weirdest guy, but he respected the earlier characterisation and retained Koenig's endearing oddities as well as his habit of pronouncing V as W for mild comic effect, even though it was not a genuine Russian trait.

The irony that his parents escaped the Soviet Union only for their Americanised son to make his name playing a Russian was not lost on him.

Anton Yelchin, actor, was born on March 11, 1989. He died on June 19, 2016, aged 27

That is a wonderful tribute to Anton Yelchin, and I confess that I was not aware of his inspiring background. His portrayal of Chekov is marvelous, and the fact that he was in fact Russian adds a special element of enjoyment to watching him in the films.

Recasting the role of Chekov will be extremely difficult, not only because young Anton set the bar so high with his excellent acting and his personal connection with the Russian character, but also because the actor who takes over the role will be compared to Anton in a variety of ways, and he'll be aware of this bright spotlight of public scrutiny.

Sadly this may be a case of "the two Darren Stevens" all over again; which is unfair to the actors involved.
