I've been working on a chronological index for the Classic Horror Film Board's 1950s forum (which I finished yesterday).
I guess without my dazzling presences around here this board just withers and dies.
It's flattering in a way -- but mostly it sucks.
Take a look at what I did for the CHFB crowd. They were very appreciative of the alphabetical indexes I did for their 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s forums several months ago. Those guys have struggled along for twenty years without that kind of organization, and as a result they've acquired half-a-dozen threads for many of the titles!
Wading through page after page of threads to find one for the movie you're looking for was a pain in the ass. Here's what one member said recently about the alphabetical index.
"Bud, allow me to add my thanks for all your great and time-consuming work. I've already used your alphabetical listings numerous times. I suspect that I'll continue to use the alphabetical more than the chronological, but I much appreciate both."
The alphabetical and chronological indexes I made for them is different from the ones here. Instead of one movie title being a link to the thread, I had to list the titles and then place all the different threads for each movie under them.
Scroll down the index and you'll see what I mean.

I've made 2,547 posts on this board -- and about 600 of them have 0 replies.
I've run out of movies I know enough about (or find interesting enough from a description) to start new threads for.
It's not the members' fault. Their great people, and they contribute wonderful posts. But we just don't have enough of them to keep this board busy.
Over the last eight years I've tried everything I could think of the attract new members, but none of it has done much good.
So . . . I've been taking a little vacation. _________________ ____________

Honestly Bud, you're overwhelming us.
Here's the thing...people see a subject and they like to consider it. Let it stew in their brains for awhile. See what other people are saying. I see this on other small forums...it takes awhile for a subject to generate conversation.
If I see a whole bunch of new topics pop up in very short order, I'm actually discouraged from posting because I fear any post I make will also get lost in the shuffle. I see in May you started 10 posts during one day in one forum and they don't have replies. When I see that, I think, "Geez, by the time I post a reply, Bud will be on to half a dozen new posts and this subject will be on page two".
That obviously not your intent but it's the law of unintended consequences: too many new subjects in short order can result in us losing focus. |

I guess you're right, Brent.
But I've always heard that a message board needs new material all the time to keep the members' interested, and despite the fact that we have wonderful members who make interesting contributions, there's just not enough of us to keep the board very active.
In the eight years the board has been in existence, this has happened pretty often. Without new material, things just grind to a halt.
Well, the posts I've already added aren't going anywhere, so I'll just let the members (current and future ones) discover them as they go along.
Concerning that period during which I was adding so many post per day, that was made possible by the fact that years ago I had written 688 reviews of science fiction movies from 1900 to 1977 -- just for fun.
I decided to post all the ones I hadn't already used, with revisions and additions, and with posters I spent fun-filled hours restoring and enhancing.
But I finished the tasks back in June.
After that I starting creating posts for the titles that were still on the Alphabetical Index from the old board -- even after asking the members to look at the list and provide posts for any of the titles they were interested in.
Months went by and there were hardly any takers. So, I started doing it myself. (*sigh . . . )
One thing you said that I don't quite understand, Brent.
"If I see a whole bunch of new topics pop up in very short order, I'm actually discouraged from posting because I fear any post I make will also get lost in the shuffle."
I don't see how your replies can get "lost in the shuffle" when the board is so inactive by the standards of practically any board I know of, even when I'm adding lots of new ones myself. That can a problem on CHFB, but it doesn't seem possible here.
It will be interesting to see if anybody else thinks I should "slow down" to encourage our members to post more.
And for the record, Brent, I really appreciate your frankness. I'm sure this will encourage a discussion about how the board might be improved. _________________ ____________

Okay, since we're being Frank (whoever that may be; I guess I'll find out once I'm him ), we need to keep in mind Theodore Sturgeon's reply when challenged that 90% of science fiction was crap: "90% of everything is crap."
Since this website attempts to cover sci-fi movies and TV comprehensively, you must therefore consider that the site is 90% about crap. (Generally speaking, that is. I know there are some among us who put the percentage much lower. If you've read movie descriptions written up by Sinister Cinema, who sell DVDs of old movies not generally commercially available, for instance, you know they can make any of their titles sound like they're worth the price. I've wasted a few bux trusting their evaluations.) Speaking for myself, when I see a thread for a movie I have no interest in, I don't take the time to write up a list of reasons the movie doesn't appeal to me. I just move on to the next post. _________________ ...or not...

Request for clarification, please.
Was your message meant to say that you don't mind my barrage of new threads from time to time, because you just read the ones your interested in?
I'm 90% sure that's what you meant, but I just wanted to be certain. And thanks for being Frankenhonest.
I mean, frank and honest. _________________ ____________

I enjoy reading all the new threads. They often remind me of old movies and TV shows I've forgotten, even if they weren't worth watching the first time; or if they were enjoyable originally but wouldn't be now that I've grown old and jaded. _________________ ...or not...

Well, that's good to hear, Wayne. Thanks.
That situation back in the spring where I went plum crazy and flooded the board with new posts won't happen again because, as I mentioned, I wanted to get all the reviews from Vintage Science Fiction (my project with the 688 reviews I'd written) onto the board just to stimulate discussions.
Now that they're all here and I've created threads for all the titles left over from the old board on the Alphabetical Indexes (except for the one for 2001 to 2010), I won't be quite so prolific. _________________ ____________

I may not post in many new threads, but that doesn't mean that I don't read them. I am still employed and usually have only evenings and weekends to read and post. Like you Bud, I am trying to fill the "TV Series" forums, but not all at once. |

Welcome to All Sci-Fi!
Ain't it funny what Wayne's joke post about how slow things were when he created this thread is now one of the most popular new threads on the board?
Next time things get slow, I'll have Wayne start another thread in Breaking News . . . _________________ ____________

Not sure what to write anymore ... For example I was thinking about something Batman 1966 tv show oriented but I was fearing I would just be cutting and pasting imdb entries, adding links to episode screen captures and barely adding any personal comments .... |

It took me years to realize that the personal take on why a movie or show is enjoyable is what message boards are all about. Anything else — all the technical details and the cast and the other stuff that people could look up about a movie or show doesn't need to be pasted into a comment.
So, by all means give us the personal slant on the movies and shows you love, the kind of things that nobody but you could write.
If you want a good example of what I mean, click on the link below. But give yourself plenty of time. It takes about 45 minutes to get through the whole thing.
