I've always been a huge fan of all the Abbott & Costello movies. I have most of them on DVD but relatively few have been released on Blu-ray Disc.

I was delighted when Universal announced The Mummy Legacy Collection on Blu-ray which will include Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy.

Not only is this a fun movie, but it's an important movie in the history of Abbott & Costello. Filmed late in 1954 and released in 1955, it was the last film they made together at Universal pictures. Expected to be just a "filler" the film was very popular and prompted Universal to offer the two a contract extension but I guess they'd had enough by then. It's the only A&C film composed for widescreen. The film has never had a home video release in it's proper aspect ratio. Fortunately Universal has assured us that the film will appear on Blu-ray in it's proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio. This should look spectacular in HD.

As was common in A&C comedies, and entirely out-of-place musical number is featured. While hard to justify, I find this oddity is part of the charm of the era and I always look forward to the song. In this case we are treated to the song stylings of Peggy King. Peggy is still with us at age 87 and was still an active singer as of 2014 (perhaps she still is but I haven't seen a recent update).

All of the A&C movies relied heavily on their burlesque "bits" in many variations and contexts.

This is not to say that they were not still funny as hell!

This movie was no exception. It's still a fun romp!!!

Even the weaker A&C films have their funny moments.

One problem was that A&C repeated their classic routines too often in their movies. Their writers should have developed fresh material for the duo.

I think Bud & Lou were confident with their tried & true routines & did not want to venture out of their comedic comfort zone. That was a career mistake.

My other quibble with this film is that the make-up for the Mummy is really poor compared to the earlier Mummy movies.

If this movie has a visual gag with a 'living skeleton' asking for water in the desert then I saw it at the theater as a kid.

Here's some interesting trivia items from IMDB.

Though Bud Abbott's character in this film was named Peter Patterson and Lou Costello's character's name was Freddie Franklin, they addressed each other by their own, real names ("Heeeeey Abbott!") throughout the entire picture. The credits are the only place where their characters' names are used.

Note from me: I guess the filmmakers decided the fans would want it that way. Very Happy

On 25 November 1954, the day after filming completed, Abbott and Costello arrived in New York City to ride on the first float of the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Note from me: I don't think this is the float mentioned above, but it certainly shows how popular they were!
