Ray Harryhausen wrote that he was always intrigued by the legend of Atlantis.

He toyed with doing an Atlantis movie but never got further than doing some sketches that involved the continent's sinking, volcanic explosions & dinos attacking the city.

Dinosaurs attacking the city?

Interesting idea. I'd love to see those sketches! I searched the internet for about an hour, but even though there are dozens and dozens of jpegs showing Ray's sketch's, I couldn't locate any for his Atlantis concepts. Sad

I haven't seen the film in a while, but in a documentary, they showed a scene in which some Atlantean scientists were trying to create Moreau-like animal-human hybrids.

I frankly don't remember this, and I wonder where Pal and his scripters decided to advance the idea. I suspect it's nowhere in Plato.

Forry Ackerman used to own the submarine also. I remember seeing a photo of it sitting in his backyard in a magazine, back in the 70s.

By gum, I found an eBay auction which was selling copies of the picture you saw (perhaps).

I believe that the enjoyable film by George Pal, "The 7 Faces Of Dr.Lao," that was released in 1964, uses the footage of the sinking of Atlantis from this movie.

Wow....You reminded me of what I think was Pal's BEST film..."Lao" was fabulous! Tony Randel was awesome in his portrayal and the dialogue was so poetic...almost like it was written by Ray Bradbury!

"The 7 Faces Of Dr.Lao"is also one of my favorites, Bud.

Enjoy seeing the stop~motion animation for the Loch Ness creature.

Early in George's career he did a series of shorts called "Puppatoons" that were stop~mo. I believe that FX legend Ray Harryhausen worked for Pal on those films.

Ray did indeed do the Puppetoon films for Pal, and I used to watch them on TV in the middle 1950s. Very Happy

Regarding the scarcity of Atlantean themed movies, I seem to remember a more recent movie based on Atlantis from 1978 called “Warlords of Atlantis” , also released as “Warlords of the Deep.” It had Doug McClure as the hero. I am almost certain there was a comic book that came out as well.

I think poor George Pal was really up against it in his production of ATLC.

Pal was not happy over the script but was forced by MGM to rush into shooting of the film due to an impending strike by the Writers Guild of America.

Once the strike took place during filming there could be no rewrites at all.

I don't have any info regarding the budget that MGM allocated for the film but I suspect it wasn't near enough for this type of film.

Plenty of stock footage from other films were utilized for ATLC.

Quo Vadis, The Naked Jungle, The Prodigal, and Kismet.

Edited from the film was a scene with men flying in the DaVinci-like flying devices. It was edited due to the poor quality of the visuals.

All & all, George did the best he could under unfavorable circumstances.

Perhaps someone will produce a brand new film about Atlantis and it'll have the benefit of a lavish budget, fine script, and today's state of the art effects.

Pow, I'd love to see the remake you described, but we both know that even though film techniques have greatly improved, today's Hollywood wouldn't produce the kind of remake you and I want.

Society has changed dramatically in the last 60 years, and these days we'd end up with a movie that bore no resemblance of anything like the classics we love from the 1950s. Sad

Consider the difference between The Time Machine (1960) and The Time Machine (2002). These are two very different versions of the classic, one directed by George Pal and one directed by Simon Wells, the grandson of H.G. Wells.

I love both the original and the remake . . . and yet most fans of the original did not!

My point is that even though the noble Simon Wells tried to create a new version of the classic . . . it failed at the box office! Sad

So, is there really any hope that a new Atlantis: The Lost Continent could be made which would please both fans of the classic films like us and the modern young audiences who (frankly) have little appreciation of those "old movie" from the 1950s? Confused

That would be like trying to release a new piece of music which would appeal to both Elvis Presley fans AND the fans of Snoop Dogg!

I rest my case . . . Sad

I don't believe that creating a new film of A:TLC would be as big a hurdle as you think it might, Bud.

Let's look at the facts.

While we fans admire George Pal's films, A:TLC was a substandard effort. As I earlier noted, Mr.Pal was seriously hampered by various problems in the making of the movie.

It was an imperfect film to begin with, unlike his 1960 "The Time Machine."

So a new A:TLC, if properly done with superior scripting & visual FX, could actually far surpass the inferior 1961 version.

In other words, the bar ain't high to begin with and new producers would not be attempting to remake a fantastic classic like "Forbidden Planet," in this particular case.

Also, how many live action Atlantis films have ever been produced other than George's movie? Certainly many documentaries on Atlantis have been done, and there is the Disney animated film. However, there are no other films devoted to Atlantis that I'm aware of.

So doing a brand new film on a topic that has been barely touched in films could interest an audience.

You also have in the built in benefit of almost everyone being aware of Atlantis. It wouldn't be like producing a movie based upon some obscure myth few have heard about in their life.

If you add all that up I think a new version of A:TLC just might be something fresh and original for today's audiences.

Actually there have been many movies & TV versions. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlantis_in_popular_culture#Motion_pictures under the section 4 Motion pictures and subsections 4.1 Films and 4.2 Television.

So take your pick or mix'n'match.
