________________________________

One of the Scalosians in Wink of an Eye is an attractive actress who makes a few brief appearances and has no lines of dialog.

No one knows who she is. Confused

Neither Memory Alpha nor the The Trek BBS has the lady's name, although both sites have discussions about her.

I searched the World Wide Web until I was World Weary from doing it, but all I could find were similar sites that also wondered who the lady is.

I made these screen shots to help with the search. Does anybody recognize this rare beauty? I think I've fallen in love with her.
Shocked

Hey, that sounds entirely possible! Good guess. Very Happy

Is there any way we could research Gene's secret love life and find the name of the girl who told Gene, "Gee, Mr. Roddenberry, I'd do just anything to get into show business!"

Wikipedia's article on Gene's personal life has some surprising info, like the statements below, all of which strongly support Sherlock Krel's theory that the lady shown above was one of Muddenberry's Women. Very Happy
________________________________

During the production of his series The Lieutenant, he entered into relationships with Nichelle Nichols and Majel Barrett, seeking to have an open relationship with both women. Nichols has since said that they broke up after this, but she was later found more than once in Roddenberry's office on Star Trek either nude or partly clothed.

By the time he worked on that series, his relationship with Barrett was well known, and they openly shared an apartment near Desilu Studios where it was filmed. He paid his secretary extra to provide an alibi for when he was with other women, both to Eileen and Barrett.

His frequent relationships with female actresses were well known, and he would boast of late night casting sessions. He sought to divorce Eileen in 1968, but afterwards felt that he didn't get his fair share of assets.

Barrett and Roddenberry were married in Japan on August 6, 1969, in a shinto ceremony. His divorce was not yet finalised, so he and Barrett had a second ceremony at their home in California on December 29.

However, Roddenberry continued to have relationships with other women. The couple had a son, Eugene Jr., who was born on February 5, 1974. Roddenberry and Barrett remained married until his death in 1991

Obviously Gene was the proverbial "sucker for a pretty face" — and the Mystery Lady above certainly qualifies in that respect!

If she didn't get the small role because Gene dilly-dallied with her and he repaid the lady by throwing her a bone (no pun intended Rolling Eyes), then he probably pursued her after he saw her among the cast. But if she rejected him, that would explain why her career didn't exactly leave orbit and warp out, Hollywood-wise.

It wouldn't be the first time Gene photon torpedoed a lady's career because she wouldn't cuddle up with The Great Bird of the Galaxy. Sad

Gene once joked that there were "only" two leading ladies from the show he hadn't slept with.

"The Great Bird of the Galaxy" himself was the template for Kirk.

The Godspell According to Bud says this:

"Men who brag about who they've slept with are ashamed of the fact that they've mostly slept alone."

In other words, men who are accomplished lovers don't need to brag, because the approval of other men doesn't interest them . . . the approval of the ladies in their lives is more than enough.

____________
____________TOS 3x11 'Wink of An Eye' Trailer

__________

___

This episode is more of the 'space invaders' action plotline, similar to By Any Other Name of the previous season.

The invaders of this episode hail from a planet where volcanic upheavals affected the water and spread radiation which, over time, affected the inhabitants in an unusual manner.

Kirk and some of his crew beam down to this planet, Scalos, responding to a distress call, but find an empty city. One of the landing party sips the native water and disappears (he must have been really thirsty. Had the water been tested yet? I doubt it).

The Trek scripting throws the usual unexpected curve at us — the crew member was not simply transported away as it seems. It turns out, the inhabitants of this planet have all been accelerated — or even 'hyper-accelerated' — to the point that they move too quickly for normal humans to see them. One sip of the native water and we're all just like them.

Since these invaders are so ultra-swift and basically invisible, it's a simple matter for them to beam aboard the Enterprise secretly and set up a new freezer unit — the intent is to store the crew for future breeding stock. One way of looking at it is that these aliens are stuck in another dimension or on another level.

The concept is similar to the Flash comic book character, who moves so fast at times that everything else appears to be frozen still. This concept has also been on display for the past few years on the TV series Smallville. When Clark Kent switches to his full speed, outracing bullets and so forth, everything else, including people, becomes frozen in time, suspended.

There are obvious discrepancies in the way the concept is presented here. Though all Scalosians supposedly move at a pace of 100 times that of normal, they go through the same amount of experience in this episode as the normal-moving crew. The crew get just as much done as the invaders during the course of the episode.

For example, the Scalosians should have completed their invasion plan in the time it took for Spock to head down to McCoy's medical lab in mid-episode. Right after Kirk is "accelerated" on the bridge, he heads for the turbolift, but that mode of transport would now take him an eternity!

Though it isn't mentioned, he must have used the stairs, er, ladders. This seems to be some careless scriptwriting. However, maybe the Scalosians were using the turbolifts in ignorance and this slowed them down enough for the discrepancies to make sense. Sure, that must be it.

Despite a surprisingly slow pace in spots even though this is such an, uh, accelerated episode (we see video tapes of the Scalosians asking for aid over & over), this comes off as fairly entertaining due to Kirk's odd conflicting attraction to the leader of the invaders, princess Deela, played by actress Kathie Browne like some naughty valley girl from outer space.

She's an invader, yes, but she tries to be nice about the whole thing.

It's amusing to see Kirk allow himself a very brief lecherous smirk when he first sees her, even as he knows, at that same moment, that he's in the middle of a hostile invasion. It's this episode and a few others which promulgated the Star Trek mystique of space babes throwing themselves at Capt. Kirk — only Kirk would get invaded by the hottest babe in the galaxy. What is it with that guy, anyway?

Here, also, is where Kirk's reputation as the super-stud of all Star Trek time & space may have gained the most traction. There's even a scene of him putting his boots back on after he and the foxy invader have obviously done the nasty deed.

Since this was the sixties, all other TV episodes on this show never went beyond subtle suggestion — say, a veiled wink or two, except perhaps Elaan of Troyius. By contrast, this scene with Kirk & Deela was very direct. The two obviously felt a genuine sexual heat, much more apparent and honest than the usual family-oriented titillation.

ABOVE: Jason Evers (left) plays Deela's jealous 2nd-in-command; he has issues with Kirk later...

In fact, the entire plot of the episode revolves around the theme of survival based on necessary procreation — mating for the sake of a species, but also seeking as much enjoyment as possible in the act. This theme reflected Roddenberry's attitude towards adult 'free love' most directly. This is almost an episode for grown-ups only. Almost.

Just one thing — the outfits on the male Scalosians. Not to my taste — they looked a bit too kinky, sorry. I got the impression these guys were former upper class brats forced to act tough.

Extra Trek Trivia: For all scenes involving acceleration, take note that the camera was tipped at a slight angle, suggesting that things were slightly off-kilter.

Deela keeps a weapon strapped to her left wrist; she knocks Kirk's phaser out of his hand with it. She and other Scalosians also wear chokers around their necks which function as communicators. Kinky, eh?

Fun Facts for "Wink of an Eye." } Deela was played by Kathie Brown who was a well known actress that appeared on numerous TV shows. Kathie was married to Darren ("Kolchak: The Night Stalker") McGavin.

The budget slashed third season of Star Trek necessitated that the matte painting for Eminiar VII from "A Taste of Armageddon" was reused for Scalos.

The trick of tilting a camera as seen on this episode is known as "Dutch angle."

Majel Barrett who usually did the voice for the Enterprise's computer did not do it on this episode.

Personally I never found Kathy Browne attractive! Maybe because she sort of resembled my Aunt Polly! Not sure, but she looked a lot better in the final Kolchak episode, The Sentry, so maybe it was her hair!!!

Thinking Outside the "Plot"!
__________________________________________________

~ A Question for the Members: In Wink of an Eye, Dr. McCoy synthesizes a formula that hyper-accelerates Spock so he can rescue Kirk from the same condition after they deal with the Scalosians aboard the Enterprise. Does this mean that the Federation now has a way to create hyper-accelerate people to do a variety of tasks at super speeds?

~ Here's what I came up with.: One example of what hyper-accelerate people could do is demonstrated in the way Spock spent a long period of "subjective time" repairing the damaged systems on the Enterprise during the last scene in the episode.

That means Scotty and the engineering boys could be capable of "juicing up" and fixing battle damage faster than Kirk can shout, "I need those weapon's systems and shields back on line, Scotty!'

"Right, Catain! It'll take about 30 seconds!" Very Happy

Oh the mischief that could be done with that formula. Burglary, theft, spying, espionage, sabotage, murder, the list is practically endless. You just have to be careful to not break the skin. Maybe use a protective suit?

I don't remember, was it said in the episode why Dr. McCoy's cure couldn't work on the Scalosians?

How did they use the turbolifts and automatic doors? At their speed it would take the doors weeks of their time to function, that is if the sensors could even recognize them.

David.

Correct on all points, David! Cool

In view of the dangers you described, it seems likely that the Federation would classify the formula as Top Secret and go to great lengths to prevent it from being used.

And yet, the episode proves that the only way to combat hyper-accelerated people is by using hyper-accelerated agents. Plus, these agents would do whatever it took to thwart attempts to develop the formula — including the destruction of labs that are creating it, and even the arrest and imprisonment of the people working on it.

As for your comment about the doors and turbulifts, the Enterprise is designed to allow crewmen to move between decks even when the power is out. We've seen episodes where crewmen climb ladders in vertical shafts to go up from one deck to another.

And, of course, the hyper-accelerated people could get from point A to point B this way even faster than normal folks using the turbolifts.

The corridor doors would be designed to open manually unless specifically locked by the computer. Otherwise a power failure would trap everyone, wherever they happened to be at the time.

I checked the clips from the episode on YouTube, and I think the episode deliberately avoided scenes of the Scalosians going through the automatic doors.

In fact, there's one shot of Kirk and Deela walking through an open door through which a motionless Scotty had just passed. But other than that, they just avoided the problem and allowed bright folks like us to figure out how they Fast Folks dealt with it. Very Happy

However, near the end of the clip below we see Jason Evers (Rael) beaming three of the Scalosians down to the planet. This ignores the fact that the transporter should have taken about 24 hours to complete the tasks! Shocked

I can't think of anyway of getting around THAT problem. Sad
