23rd Century asteroid mining! "There's gold in them thar asteroids!"

Your recent posts gave me such a strong urge to enjoy a TOS episode a few days ago that I watched Amok Time, one of my three favorites. The others are Balance of Terror and Space Seed, but there plenty of others that are actually just as good.

Keep 'em common, Ensign Trekriffic!

Steve, you've certainly presented us with a marvelously complex story!

I'm going to have to go back several pages and reread them carefully while taking a few notes. My aging gray matter is struggling to keep the details straight. That's understandable, I guess, in view of the way we have to catch up whenever we come back to All Sci-Fi periodically. Very Happy

If I feel like I've summarized the events in the period I'll review, I might post the notes so you can let me know if I've gotten anything wrong.

The notes might also be helpful for other members who would enjoy a summary. Very Happy

l’d be honored if you would post a summary, Bud. I find myself having to go back and review what’s transpired, now that this story is over 220 cells long. I’d be happy to clarify or fill in any gaps in your analysis.

Greetings fellow ASF members. Congratulations for having made it this far. I hope you have all enjoyed this "what if" episode that might have occurred near the end of Kirk's five year mission. The Abaddon remains the best of my TOS based scratch-bashed models and I will use any excuse (such as this thread) to post new images of her. Sorry I just cannot resist!

Anyway, now for the good stuff! Wondering if some readers may have gotten somewhat lost in the weeds of this ever growing narrative, your main man at ASF, Bud Brewster, thought it might be a nice idea to summarize the sequence of events to help refresh everyone's memory and/or fill in any gaps. Of course, I was gratified that anyone, much less Bud, would volunteer to perform such a task so I was quick to agree with his ideas. What follows is a collaboration between he and I but it's honestly, like, 99% Bud.

Mostly I just added some "Author's Notes" (in blue text) and fleshed out or added some missing information here and there.

Anyway, read on and remember, fortune favors the bold!

Page 1

The USS Abaddon is introduced as “the most powerful dreadnaught ever built by the Federation”. She’s armed with advanced weapons based on technology gained from a salvaged Doomsday Machine, along with captured Romulan technology. She’s one of only two such ships which were built. The other was named the Goliath.

This formidable starship is captained by Karis Tatenen, and the ship's mission is to defend settlements and outposts along the disputed regions bordering the Klingon Empire.

After receiving intelligence which indicates an impending sneak attack by the Klingons, the Abaddon leaves it’s hidden asteroid base to join a Federation fleet sent to defend Sherman’s Planet.

Cut to a scene in space which shows the Abaddon and the Enterprise

However, the Enterprise also has orders to investigate hostile actions taken by Captain Tantenen against several Klingon vessels.

Cut to a scene in space which shows the Abaddon facing a Klingon vessel

(Illustrating the prior incident, but not showing details of the hostile actions)

Cut to a scene in space which shows Enterprise, and then a shot of Kirk on the bridge.

The text describes the Enterprises orders: rendezvous with eight starships sent to defend Sherman’s planet. The Klingon attack force is said to include four “L-24” battleships which plan to “decimate the colony on Sherman’s Planet” and weaken the Federation’s hold on the disputed territory.

Cut to a shot of Kirk and Spock on the bridge.

The captain and his first officer discuss the combat capabilities of the Abaddon and the reputation of its captain, who is known as “The Destroyer of Klingons”.

Cut to several shots of the Enterprise and the Abaddon, during which . . .

Kirk ponders the accusations made by the Klingon high command against Captain Tatenen, in which they say he has attacked “defenseless ships and settlements”, committing acts of violence that have strained the Federation / Klingon relations almost to the breaking point.

Cut to the Abaddon and the Enterprise in attack formation, awaiting the rest of the Federation fleet

Kirk realizes his discussion of the accusations with Tatenen will have to wait until the Federation forces have dealt with the “large Klingon attack force” they expect to arrive soon.

Cut to a shot of Kirk on the bridge, with Spock and Uhura at the stations behind him.

This image has important character details about Captain Karis Tatenen. Previously he lost his wife and son in a Klingon sneak attack, and this caused him to suffer a mental breakdown which required several years of therapy. However, he was diagnosed as cured, and he used his influence with Starfleet Command to arrange for assignment as captain of the Abaddon.

Kirk feels that assigning “an emotionally scarred man” as captain of the Federations most powerful starship might have been a serious mistake.

Cut to a scene in space which shows the Abaddon, with Sherman’s planet in the far distance.

The Abaddon advances ahead of the fleet and positions itself to meet the Klingon attack force alone. All weapons are charged and ready, and Tatenen orders the ship’s cloaking device activated.

Cut to a shot of 12 or more Klingon ships approaching in the distance.

The Klingon ships do not detect the presence of the Abaddon as they cruise right past it on all sides! Tatenen signals battle orders to the rest of the Federation fleet.

Cut to a closeup of Captain Tatenen as he stands and faces the view screen.

Tatenen issues a bold challenge to the Klingon attack force, phrasing it in a manner the Klingons would interpret as showing courage, determination, and the certainty that he his speaking from a position of strength.

The following 17 images depict the battle

The Abaddon proves to be invincible, singlehandedly defeating most of the Klingon ships before the remaining ones retreat. Kirk and Captain Wesley of the Lexington briefly discuss the amazing manner in which the Adaddon handled the battle.

Epilog

A Romulan bird of prey is shown after decloaking

The Romulan ship has gone undetected by both the Klingons and the Federation. They witnessed the frightening power of the Abaddon and the total defeat of the Klingons. The Romulan commander sends a message to Romulus, informing them of the Klingon defeat and that they have located the Federation’s new Dreadnought.

This chapter ends with the bird of prey cloaked and secretly following the Abaddon . . .

Page 2

Cut to a festive shot of Kirk, McCoy, and Spock in dress uniforms

Aboard the Enterprise as she orbits Sherman’s Planet, the ship’s three senior officers chat about the victory celebration being held by the governor for the entire Federation defense force.

Cut of shot of the Abaddon in space

The Abaddon has been delayed by “minor repairs” after wiping out Klingons (which is part of the punch line for a joke about Charmin toilet paper. Highlight the area below to see the joke.

__How is the Enterprise like a roll of Charmin toilet paper?
~ They both go around Uranus and wipe out those damn “Klingons”!

Cut to a closeup of Captain Tatenen on the bridge.

Tatenen is told that the ship’s battle damage is minor. He then issues orders for a course change and says, “We’ll be a little late for the celebration. This battle isn’t over yet.”

Cut to Kirk aboard the Enterprise.

Kirk is told that the Abaddon is in pursuit of the Klingon surviors. He orders Sulu to leave orbit and pursue the Adaddon at warp eight . . .

Cut to shots of the Abaddon in pursuit of the four Klingon ships in formation.

Tateneen is aware that the surviving ships will transmit valuable info about the Abaddon’s capabilies back to the Klingon high command. But as he approaches the fleeing ships, he notices that one of the five surviors is not in the formation. Then the fifth ship, which had hidden itself behind an asteroid the Adaddon had passed, approaches from the rear and opens fire!

After it’s brief initial attack, the Klingon ship ceases fire.

Cut to the Abaddon and the Klingon ship in space, then a series of images which depict a heated exchange between Tatennen and the Klingon captain.

The Klingon captain states that he would rather die with honor rather than run from the Abaddon. He causes his ship to self-destruct while just 1,000 meter’s from the dreadnought!
Miraculously the Abaddon survives the blast, a testament to her superior technology. Tatenen orders a probe sent to the asteroid the Klingon used for cover, acting on a vague suspicion. Meanwhile the Abaddon continues its pursuit of the four Klingon ships.

Cut to a dark and foreboding image of the Klingon high command on Romulus.

Inside the building, the Klingon High Council questions a Klingon official concerning the report he’s received from the four surviving ships. The High Council members are outraged by the news that only five ships escaped, out of a battle fleet numbering thirty-two ships.

The Klingon making the report, Commander Opac, tells the High Council about the Federation’s new dreadnought, a ship with frightening capabilities. Opac explains that the reports he got were garbled because of possible jamming by the Federation fleet to prevent a detailed report from being received.

In fact, they finally lost contact with the four ships completely, and only one word was discernable in the final message...

Abaddon.

Cut to a shot of the Enterprise in space.

The Enterprise arrives at the last known coordinates of the surviving Klingon ships. Sensors indicate that a large explosion occurred near an asteroid some light years away.

Cut to Kirk and Spock on the bridge.

Spock reports on the unexplained explosion, but he can’t determine what caused it. Suddenly Kirk is informed by Sulu that one of the surviving Klingon ships has reversed course and is headed in their direction!

The Enterprise is fired on, and she returns fire, destroying her attacker. But the other three ships arrive as well and surround the Enterprise.

Cut to a shot of the Abaddon arriving in the nick of time!

Kirk and Tatenen exchange lighthearted banter briefly until Kirk admits that he wouldn’t mind a little help with the three Klingon ships. Within seconds the Abadddon turns two of the three ships into fond memories and expanding gas clouds.

The third ship surrenders . . . an offer which Kirk naturally questions the validity of, but the Klingon commander offers to drop his shields and beam over to the Enterprise as a hostage. (These suspiciously unKlingon-like actions are definitely teasing the reader’s interest. Cool )

Cut to a closeup of Captain Karis Tatenen on the Abaddon’s bridge.

Tatenen is informed that the probe sent to investigate the asteroid which hid the Klingon ship from the Abaddon’s sensors while it passed by is made of unusually dense matter. And behind this asteroid is a Klingon colonial transport ship whose engines are disabled (according to the Abaddon’s probe).

The ship that hid behind the asteroid obviously did so to protect this non-military vessel!

This odd piece of news confirms the suspicion Tatenen had about the asteroid. And Tatenen surmises that the colonial transport is extremely important to the Klingons — for unknown reasons.

Cut to the Kirk on the bridge of the Enterprise

Uhura patches Tatenen thru to Kirk who claims that the Klingon ship has no intention of surrendering. He claims it’s a ruse to keep them from discovering the disabled Klingon transport long enough for it to repair its engines and escape. The kamikaze self-destruction of the other Klingon ship was done for the same reason — an attempt to prevent the Abaddon from discovering the Klingon colonial transport!

At that moment, Chekov tells Kirk that the Klingon ship has powered its weapons and fled at high warp for Klingon space!

Cut to the Abaddon in space

During this conversation, Tatenen has done something unexpected. He allows the discussion between Kirk and himself to also be transmitted on a frequency the Klingons will receive! During the discussion Tatenen urges Kirk to destroy the Klingon ship.

The Enterprise plots a pursuit course to follow the Klingon ship, but Tatenen orders the Abaddon to head for the asteroid and the hidden ship.

Cut to the Romulan scout ship several light years away, and then to Tatenenen on the Abaddon bridge.

The Romulans determine the Abaddon’s probe can detect their cloaked ship, so they destroy it. But the probe manages to relay data at the last second which reveals to Tatenen that an energy beam destroyed it. However, he isn’t sure if the hidden Klingon colonial transport destroyed it or someone else did.

Tatenen orders the cloaking device to be engaged when they eventually get closer to the asteroid and the Klingon transport.

Cut to the Enterprise in space as she fires on the Klingon ship, then the bridge of the Enterprise.

The Enterprise disables the engines of the Klingon ship who’s captain pretended to surrender, but then fled. Kirk contacts the ship and discovers that an old acquaintance of his is now in command — Kor, the Klingon he met in Errand of Mercy.

Kor explains that Tatenen deliberately allowed them to hear the exchange between Tatenen and Kirk, which is why the former Klingon captain decided to flee thinking he would be destroyed by either the Enterprise or the Abaddon.

More importantly, however, is Kor’s revelation that Tatenen is being manipulated into destroying the hidden Klingon transport so that the Klingon’s will be outraged at the destruction of a ship carrying the cure for a plague that’s been ravaging the Klingon colony it was bound for.

Kor asks to be beamed over so he can convince Kirk to stop the Abaddon from destroying the Klingon colony ship and starting a war between the Federation and the Empire.

Page 3

Cut to the Romulan bird of prey’s bridge

The Romulan commander orders his first officer to send a fake signal on the frequency used by the destroyed probe. The false data they send is designed to convince the Abaddon that the break in the signal was caused by a disruptor bolt fired from the Klingon transport. The commander also tells the first officer to rotate the modulation of the cloaking field generator to reduce the chance of further detection, and to match the Abaddon’s maneuver’s exactly as it gets closer to the asteroid.

The commander hopes that the Abaddon will think any faint sensor readings are just a “reflection” (a ploy we also saw Captain Kirk use in Balance of Terror.)

Cut to Kirk, McCoy, Spock, and Kor in the Enterprise briefing room.

Kor explains the importance of saving the transport ship carrying 2000 colonists and the serum for the plague. He also tells Kirk that the asteroid will block the Abaddon’s sensors, preventing it from discovering that it’s not a warship.

Furthermore, Kor tells the Federation officers that a Romulan spy ship is in the vicinity, and after destroying the Abaddon’s probe they have been sending false data. Kor believes the Romulan’s plan to send data indicating the colony ship IS a warship, with weapons charged and ready to fire on the Abaddon.

Cut to an image which shows the Romulan spy ship firing on the probe.

Kor presents a data tape he brought with him, and it contains images made by the colony ship and transmitted to Kor’s ship. The images show the Romulan ship destroying the probe. Spock confirms that the data matches certain sensor readings from the Enterprise, thus confirming that Kor’s claim is valid.

Now convinced that Kor is telling the truth, Kirk orders Sulu to set a pursuit course for the Abaddon at maximum warp.

Cut to the Abaddon in space, with text describes a discussion between Tatenen and First Office Watson

The fake data which is supposed to be from the Abaddon’s destroyed probe has completely fooled Tatenen. He and Watson have been led to believe that the hidden Klingon ship has a new weapon which will be used when the Abaddon comes into range.

Cut to Tatenen in his cabin.

Yeoman McGivers (a new character) enters Tatenen’s cabin and asks him if needs anything from the galley. We hear again, during their conversation, that Tatenen’s wife and son died in a Klingon attack — and we also learn that McGivers is actually an alien shape shifter, something which Tatenen is already aware of.

Briefly MrGivers takes on the appearance of Tatenen’s late wife and offers to “comfort” him, but he angrily reminds her that he’s told her never to take on his wife’s form. McGivers tries to convince Tatenen that his need to avenge his dead family is not what they would have wanted him to do.

Tatenen angrily orders McGivers to get out.

Cut to the Abaddon in space.

Tatenen thinks about his lost wife and son . . . and how much he want to make the Klingon’s pay for what they took from him.

Cut to a series of scenes in the Klingon High Council.

K’mpec of the High Council questions Admiral Krell, a Klingon commander who had been in charge of several ships which battled the other dreadnaught of the same type as the Abaddon, eight months earlier . . . and destroyed it.

But Krell reveals that the other dreadnought, called the Goliath, was NOT actually destroyed by the Klingon ships, but instead by a Romulan ship which showed up just when all the Klingon ships had expended their power in a vain attempt to destroy the powerful new Federation ship.

The Romulan ship used a new and awesome weapon that not only destroyed the Goliath instantly, it left no debris!

Cut to the Enterprise in space, followed by shots of Kirk on the bridge, and then Tatenen on the Abaddon

Running at warp 9, the Enterprise catches up to the Abaddon, and Kirk decides on a risky maneuver to get the attention of his fellow captain. Communications are being jammed by the Romulans, so Kirk orders Sulu to fire a low yield torpedo at a small asteroid nearby . . . and also to drop the Enterprise’s shields!

On the Abaddon, Tatenen is informed the Enterprise is approaching, and that she fired a torpedo at a nearby asteroid and then dropped her shields.

The Abaddon drops to sublight, and the two ships fly parallel while Kirk and Spock debate how to get word to Tatenen about the true nature of the Klingon ship and of the presence of Romulans. The Abaddon’s shields are up, so they can’t transport over.

Kirk orders the shuttle Galileo made ready, hoping to arrange a face-to-face meeting with Tatenen and avoid the tragedy that might occur if it’s plans to destroy the Klingon ship aren’t stopped.

Cut to scenes of the two ships in space, the shuttle approaching the Abaddon, followed by it docking in the shuttle bay, and then a close up of Kirk.

Mr. Watson hesitantly informs his captain that the shuttle contains Captain Kirk, Mr. Scott, and . . . a Klingon. After the three have joined Tatenen in the briefing room, Kirk tells Tatenen about the Romulan plot to use the Abaddon’s actions against the colony ship to provoke a war between the Federation and the Klingons.

Kirk makes a compelling (and well written, Mr. Trekriffic Very Happy) appeal to help the Klingons and thereby demonstrate the peaceful nature of the Federation. Tatenen is distrustful of the info the Klingons have offered, and he calls Mr. Watson on the intercom to ask him what he’s learned from their “interrogation” of Kor. Watson says that after “increasing the force to level 12” the Klingon became very cooperative.

Kirk is alarmed that Tatenen used a torture device, but Tatenen makes no apologies for his methods. Watson informs Tatenen that the Klingon’s claim concerning the colony ship and cure for the plague is true. He states that the “cure is in their blood” (not a serum as I’d previously thought.)

Cut to the briefing room with Kirk and Tatenen, joined by Mr. Watson.

This scene explains why Mr. Watson looks like “Norman”, the android from Kirk’s second encounter with Harry Mudd. And, in fact, Mr. Watson is an android built by the same technology that created that A.I. society — although Tatenen states that Mr. Watson is “generations removed from the android you knew, Kirk.”

Tatenen also makes an intriguing statement. “Mr. Watson is instrumental to all things related to the operation of the Abaddon.” That suggests that “Mr. Watson” is in direct communication with the ship’s computer — an A.I. to A.I. link! (Author’s note: Good catch Bud. Yes, Watson has a direct mental link to the ship’s M7 computer - a descendant of the infamous M5 multitronic unit but with the bugs worked out.)

Tatenen tells Mr. Watson to provide Scotty with the “auxiliary cloaking device” they have, and then escort him to the transporter room.

Cut to the bridge of the Romulan ship

The Romulans have detected the presence of both the Enterprise and the Abaddon and surmised that the shuttle craft was used because communications were still being jammed. The Romulan commander tells his First Officer that the “Gal Garth’Thong” will arrive soon. (A new ship being introduced to the story.)

Cut to a shot of the TOS bird of prey from Balance of Terror

Text with the picture: The Romulan commander tells his First Officer to instruct the Gal Garth’Thong to stay cloaked and await instructions.

Cut back to the Adaddon briefing room with Kirk and Tatenen.

Kirk and Tatenen discuss the fact that Tatenen’s aggression against the Klingons has already caused concern in Star Fleet that could provoke a war. Then they discuss the encounter Kirk had with the Romulan bird of prey in Balance of Terror and the new weapon the Enterprise was threatened by.

Scotty calls from the transporter room to say he’s got the auxiliary cloaking device and he’s ready to return to the Enterprise.

Page 4

Cut to more scenes of Kirk and Tatenen in the briefing room

Tatenen tells Kirk that because of the continued jamming they’ve experienced, communication between the Abaddon and the Enterprise will have to be by radio waves while they’re still traveling as sublight velocities. And they’ll use the old Navajo code to prevent the Romulans from understanding their messages.

Before Mr. Scott transports, Kirk tells him to take a record tape copy of the discussion the two captains just finished, during which they devised a plan to trick the Romulans into thinking that Tatenen is determined to destroy the colony ship.

According to the plan, a cloaked Enterprise will be laying in wait for the Romulans to finally reveal their position at some point. When that happens, the Enterprise will attack at close range, while the Adaddon protects the colony ship.

After Scotty has transported, Kirk asks Tatenen if the Abaddon can withstand a hit by one of the powerful “plasma torpedoes” which the Enterprise faced in Balance of Terror. Tatenen thinks it can, given the pounding it’s already endured “without a scratch.”

Cut to the bridge of the Enterprise, with Scotty and Spock.

Scotty has given the tape to Spock so he can familiarize himself with the elaborate plan about to unfold. Scotty gazes at the Abaddon on the main view and wistfully describes all the technological enhancements that make it the most powerful starship every built. Examples of its enhancements include TWO warp cores in engineering and another one, a THIRD, in the primary hull.

(These figure prominently during later scenes when the ship is in danger, and Tatenen makes some unusual decisions.)

Cut to a new scene of Kirk and Tatenen in the briefing room

This scene reveals a surprising fact about the Abaddon: almost the entire crew is composed of androids! The only human is Captain Tatenen, and the only other crewman who is NOT an android is described by Tatenen as “some kind of biomechanical human-machine hybrid” - the shape shifter, McGivers, who appeared earlier as his female yeoman!

Tatenen asks Kirk if Kor (the Klingon prisoner) can stay on the Abaddon so that Tatenen can question him further. Kirk denies the request, uncomfortable with the possibility that Tatenen will torture him. Tatenen accepts the denial, and he says he’ll just question him now, while he’s still under the influence of the neural neutralizer which makes him incapable of lying.

Tatenen goes off to do this, and Yeoman McGivers comes in to offer Kirk refreshments. McGivers has taken the form of Lt. McGivers from Space Seed (Khan’s love interest). Kirk asks “her” why she’s adopted that name and physical appearance, and she explains that she admired the real Lt. McGivers bravery when she went with Khan to conquer a savage new world.

Cut to a shot in space of a “movie version” of the “Klingon bird of prey”, such the one in The Voyage Home

(Author's note: The Bird-of-Prey I used is a physical model I built some years ago complete with LED lighting.)

The text presents a message being sent by the Klingon ship to the home world, in which they state they detected two Federation starships and two other cloaked ships of unknown identity. They also report that the Klingon D-7 Kirk fired on and beamed Kor off of is disabled (warp engines destroyed).

Cut to a series of scenes in which Tatenen and Watson are interrogating Kor, who is still under the influence of the neural neutralizer which is like a truth serum.

Kor reveals that the Goliath (sister ship of the Adaddon) was destroyed by a Romulan ship which emerged from a nebula and completely destroyed it with a plasma torpedo after a group of Klingon ships failed to do little more than dent its shields.

Then Tatenen asks Kor about the sneak attack in which his wife and son were killed. In a surprising revelation, the Klingon “sneak attack” was revealed to be an operation that went horribly wrong. The mission was to kidnap a famous research scientist — Tatenen’s wife — whom the Klingon’s had been told was working on a biological weapon to use against them.

However, during the firefight which ensued during the abduction attempt, Tatenen’s wife and son were accidentally caught in the crossfire and killed. Furthermore, the Klingon spy who convinced them into thinking the researchers were developing a biological weapon was found to actually be working for the Romulans, who wanted to increase tension between the Federation and the Empire!

Even more tragic is the fact that Tatenen’s wife was actually working on a CURE for the Klingon plaque, and she was close to a breakthrough when she was killed!

Kor, the Klingon commander in charge of the mission that failed so tragically, confesses that he feels responsible for the millions of Klingons who have died from a plague that could have been cured by the serum Tatenen’s wife was developing.

And so Captain Tatenen realizes that even though he blames the Klingons for the death of his wife and son, he now must seek retribution from the Romulans for tricking the Klingons into conducting the mission which caused the death of his family.

(This surprising change in the focus of Tatenen’s revenge is one of the best elements of the story! And it gives Kor’s character an unexpected and interesting depth. Very Happy)

Kor also reveals that’s he’s a spy for the Klingons who’s tricked the Romulans into thinking he’s working for them! In other words, he’s turned the tables on the Romulans by pretending to be the same kind of traitor that caused the disastrous mission which cost the Klingons a cure for the plague.

So, now we have an uneasy alliance between Captain Tatenen and a Klingon, both yearning for revenge against the Romulans! (This is first-rate story telling, folks.)

Cut to the Romulan ship’s commander.

The commander is told that they’ve gotten a transmission from “their agent” (Kor), claiming that he’s planning to steal a shuttle and escape from the Abaddon. He wants the Romulans to beam him to their ship when he gets in range. The commander says that he “better have the device.”

Cut to Kirk and Tatenen.

Tatenen tells Kirk that his discovery that Kor is a Klingon spy who has the Romulans convinced he’s working for them has caused a change in the the two captain’s original plans.

Tatenen explains that Kor will pretend to have Kirk as his prisoner, and once aboard the Romulan scout they will use the element of surprise to gain control of the ship. And the two men will have with them a device called a Higgs Field generator, one of several the Abaddon uses to reduce it’s mass from 20 billion tons down to only 10 million tons, thus allowing the ship to have nearly impregnable carbon-neutronium armor cladding yet still be maneuverable. Without the Higgs field generators the ship wouldn’t be able to overcome its own massive inertial resistance to move!

But if the device is activated aboard the Romulan ship with its fail-safes turned off, the device will reduce the ships mass to zero and the mass would become energy . . . destroying the ship.

Close up of Uhura

Uhura informs Spock the Abaddon is launching the shuttle Galileo.

Switch to a view of the IKS Korina (the Klingon Bird-of-Prey

The IKS Korinar is three light years away from the Abaddon, cloaked and ready for battle, but Captain Krug (Christopher Lloyd) has orders not to engage the USS Abaddon.

Captain Tatenen on the bridge

On the bridge of the Abaddon, Captain Tatenen orders a low power phaser hit on the Enterprises starboard nacelle, part of the ruse which Tatenen and Kirk are using to trick the Klingons.

But that plan includes Kirk pretending to be Kor’s hostage aboard the Galileo. Tatenen is surprised by a report from his security team that Kirk has been found in the briefing room, and he’s just beginning to wake up after apparently being drugged. A hypospray was on the floor next to Kirk, who is demanding to see Captain Tatenen!

Capt Tatenen suspects who the “imposter” is aboard the Galileo. Moment later the computer confirms that Yeoman McGivers is not aboard the Abaddon.

~ (Author’s note-We know from Tatenen's earlier encounter with McGivers in his cabin that she/it is a shape-shifter after she/it took his wife Devon's form.)

Cut to a shot of the Enterprise in the foreground, being fired on by the Abaddon in the distance.

As part of their plan to trick the Romulans, the Abaddon fires a “low energy” phaser at the Enterprise, as well as a phaser blast that deliberately misses the shuttle which left the Abaddon, the one carrying McGivers/Kirk and Kor.

The real Kirk is beamed back to the Enterprise, and the Abaddon goes after the shuttle. After Kirk is aboard, the Abaddon fires a “low yield” torpedo that does no damage other than knock out the main energizer. Scotty says he can fix it in 5 minutes. Spock orders a parabolic course to the asteroid, warp factor three. This will take it on a large arc seemingly away from the asteroid before curving back again.

~ (Author’s note: Spock is hoping to fool the Romulans into thinking the Enterprise is returning to Sherman's Planet for repairs and/or reinforcements).

Cut to the bridge of a Romulan scout ship

The Romulan captain is told about the launch of the shuttle with Kor aboard. The Abaddon seemingly cripples the Enterprise so that the Abaddon can pursue the shuttle alone. The Romulan commander is fooled by the ruse, thinking that Captain Tatenen wants to insure that he alone will defeat his foes. The Romulan Commander tells his subordinates that he knows Captain Tatenen “will brook no interference from the Enterprise."

The Romulan captain gives orders to make sure their Klingon collaborator (Kor) has “the device” (the Higgs field generator) before transporting him to the scout.

Kor (pretending to work with the Romulans) calls the Romulan scout from the shuttle to say he has a prisoner — Captain Kirk, although it’s actually McGivers the shape shifter, but Kor does NOT know this! He also confirms he has “the device”. He requests to be beamed over to the scout.

The Romulans have positioned themselves under cloak near to the Klingon colony ship so that their transporter beam will seem to come from the Klingon vessel, thereby preventing the Abaddon from detecting the Romulan ship’s presence.
The Romulan commander goes to the transporter room to meet Kor and “Kirk”.

Cut to several shots of Kirk on the bridge of the Enterprise, as well as one of Scotty in a Jefferies tube making repairs.

Kirk tells Yeoman Rand to load a copy of the log into the “record drone”. Scotty fixes the energizer, but he says they can’t use their cloaking device and go any faster than warp six.

Kirk tells Uhura to contact the Klingon ship and tell them that the Enterprise and the Abaddon are on a peaceful mission to save the Klingon colony ship.

On the bridge, Spock notices a “blip” on the sensors that indicates something too far away to identify, so Kirk orders Sulu to set course for it.

Cut to the Abaddon as it approaches the asteroid behind which is the disabled Klingon colony ship.

As part of a plan we don’t yet know the details of, Captain Tatenen orders First Officer Watson to punch a 500 meter-wide hole into the asteroid mentioned earlier, which the transport colony ship is close to.

~ (Author’s note: Tatenen reveals his motives for doing this in a pending scene).

Cut to the captain of the Klingon ship, Korinar, standing on the bridge.

Captain Krug is told that the transport is carrying a cure for a plague on Donatu V, but her engines are damaged. Krug is ordered to help with the repairs and do everything necessary to protect the transport. Krug suppresses a smile, because he relishes the idea of engaging in combat with the Abaddon.

Following Kirk’s orders, Uhura manages to get a somewhat garbled message through the interference to the Korinar. She tells Captain Krug that their willing to assist the disabled colony ship.

But this only angers Krug because he doesn’t trust the Federation in general, nor Kirk and Tatenen in particular. Tatenen, in fact, is infamously hostile to Klingons.

As a result, Captain Krug does not believe the offer of assistance, and he tells the Enterprise that he knows it is here with the Abaddon, a ship captained by the man known as “The Destroyer of Klingons”. Krug then severs the link without further discussion.

Cut to the shuttle Galileo

Kor and the fake Kirk discuss how to fool the Romulans when they materialize aboard the scout and pretend that Kirk is Kor’s prisoner. They mention that they have to access the ship’s computer and shut of the device that has been causing the jamming which has prevented the Federation ships from communicating.

Page 6

Cut to the Romulan scout

Kor and "Kirk" have been beamed aboard the Romulan ship, where they quickly took the surprised Romulan Commander prisoner. They disable the jamming device to restore full communications between them and the Federation ships.

Although Kor is eager to kill the Romulan commander, “Kirk” tells him not to because they need him alive. McGivers/Kirk says he will contact the Abaddon to tell them they must be ready to transport Kor and the Romulan commander in a few moments. “Kirk” tells Kor he is staying behind because has something he needs to do first, and he wants Kor to tell Watson on the Abaddon to stand by for his signal to transport him after he’s done with the task he needs to perform.

Cut to a close of Uhura aboard the Enterprise

Uhura says the jamming has now stopped, but the Klingon commander “hung up on us”. Captain Kirk tells Uhura to hail the Abaddon along with the unidentified “blip” on sensors.

Cut to a scene of deep space, with text which includes the following.

Kor and the Romulan commander have been beamed over, and Tatenen puts Kor in handcuffs because he doesn’t want to risk Kor trying to escape if the effects of the neural neutralizer wear off sooner than expected. The Romulan commander is in the Abaddon’s brig.

Cut to several scenes aboard the bridge of the Enterprise.

Tatenen answers the Enterprise's hail, and Captain Tatenen tells Kirk that McGivers the shape shifter (as Kirk) is still aboard the Romulan ship.

Cut to the Enterprise

Kirk tells Tatenen that a Klingon bird of prey is nearby, but its captain (Krug) doesn’t believe they’re on a peaceful mission. Kirk suggests that Tatenen contact him to say he’s got the Romulan commander, in the hope that this will convinces the Klingon.

Suddenly Chekov says the “blip” the detected at extreme ranger earily is a Kingon battle ship headed for them at warp five. Kirk orders hard to port, because the battleship outguns them 10 to 1.

Cut to the Romulan scout

After McGivers shuts off the jammer, he stows the Higgs Field generator in a locker and quickly lays down on the floor before shape-shifting into the form of the Romulan Commander. Moments later a guard burns through the locked door and asks if the commander is injured. The shape shifter makes up a story about being stunned by “Kirk” shortly after captain and Kor materialized, but he doesn’t know what happened after that.

The guard tells the McGivers/Romulan commander that the Gal Gath’ Thong (a Romulan bird of prey) has contacted them and asked for instructions. The fake Romulan stalls for time by telling the guard to leave him while he plans the next move.

Cut to the Enterprise

Captain Kirk is told that the battleship hasn’t changed course, it’s still headed for the asteroid the Klingon transport is located near. In a bold and clever maneuver, Kirk orders the cloaking device engaged and the Enterprise brought up close behind the approaching Klingon battleship.

Spock informs Kirk that the “L-24” dreadnought / battleship is probably one of ships which escaped after the Klingon fleet attacked Sherman’s planet. But this one is heavily damaged, with shields down to 10% and only able to reach a maximum speed of warp 6.

Cut to the IKS Korinar

Tatenen calls Krug and tells him he has Kor with him to explain why the Abaddon is there to help the Klingon transport. Kor and Krug exchange info about how Kor is working with Kirk and Tatenen against the Romulans, because they’ve been deliberately causing tension between the Federation and the Klingons for years.

Cut to Romulan scout

McGivers (as the Romulan commander) accesses the computer and finds out the mission and location of the Romulan bird of prey (he previously only knew its name, not its class). He then commands the computer to seal the door and flood the rest of the ship with sleep gas, after which he plans to call Karis (Captain Tatenen).

~ (Author’s note: McGivers use of Tatenen’s first name suggests a certain level of affection/tension based on a relationship only hinted at earlier).

Page 7

Cut to subspace communication between Kor and Krug

Kor admits that the Federation used a neural neutralizer on him, but he points out that the device causes him to tell the truth, not lie for the Federation. For that reason, he can be believed when he says that the Romulans are plotting to pit the Federation against the Klingons. He tell’s Krug that he can prove it by letting him talk to their prisoner . . . the Romulan commander.

Aboard the Enterprise

Suddenly the alarms go off aboard the Enterprise, Sulu manages to dodge out of the path of a photon torpedo fired by an unidentified ship. The torpedo was ctually aimed at the Klingon battleship, but it did not know that the cloaked Enterprise was in the line of fire!

After the Klingon battleship is destroyed by the torpedo, an approaching Constitution class ship is detected on long range scanners, and Uhura is ordered to contact them.

The approaching ship is the Lexington under Commodore Wesley, who tells Kirk that the L-24 it just torpedod played dead in the wreckage after the battle at Sherman’s planet and ambushed the Yorktown, almost destroying it before the Klingon battleship fled the scene.

Kirk orders Scott to drop the cloak so they can go to warp 8 and catch up with the Adaddon.

Aboard the Romulan scout

McGivers calls Tatenen and reports that he’s secured the Romulan scout and that the Klingon bird of prey, the Gal Gath’Thong, is “holding station” (by his orders as the fake Romulan commander). He also says the ship can cloak AND it has mid-to-high warp capability. Its mission was to destroy the Klingon colony ship.

But the presence of the Abaddon means they can use the Federation ship to start an interstellar war, because the Klingon High Command would never tolerate the destruction of a colony ship by a Federation starship.

~ (Author’s note: This hearkens back to an earlier scene where the Klingons warn Starfleet Command they are on the brink of war if the Abaddon doesn’t cease its unprovoked attacks against their forces and colonies along their border with the Federation. )

Page 8

Cut to Abaddon traveling at high warp

Tatenen offers to beam McGivers off the scout when McGivers hears a Romulan cutting through the locked door, but McGivers says he must stay and activate the Higgs field generator manually because “the remote was damaged”.

Cut to closeup of Captain Tatenen

Tatenen speaks with Kor, who is down in the brig with the Romulan Commander, watching the communicator screen as Krug questions the Romulan. Captain Tatenen and Kor hope that Krug will convince the Klingon captain that the Abaddon is on a mission to save the Klingon transport, rather than to attack Klingon ships (as Tatenen is famous for doing).

The captain orders First Officer Watson to bring Kor to him as soon as Krug decides whether or not he’s convinced.

Cut to the brig, with a close-up of the Romulan Commander

The Romulan Commander is now under the influence of the neural neutralizer which forces him to tell the truth. On the communicator screen, Krug asked him to reveal his name, along with his true mission in Klingon space. The Romulan says, “I am Lukeen of the House Merrock.”

He states that he was sent to find the Klingon colony ship and prevent it from reaching its destination. However, the arrival of the dreadnought Abaddon has “presented us with a new opportunity to rid us of even MORE Klingon and human filth!”

By sending false information to the Abaddon, the Romulans hoped to start a war between the Empire and the Federation over Tatenen’s acts of atrocity (in the eyes of the Klingons). They know that destroying a transport filled with civilian families would be the final straw in the eyes of the Klingons, especially if the colonist’s blood could provide a serum which will save the lives of millions,.

Krug is finally convinced that the Abaddon wants to protect the Kingon colony ship, but he sends word to Tatenen that the Klingon ship, the Korinar, will neither interfere nor assist the Abaddon, because his orders are to protect the colony ship “from all attackers” — so the Abaddon will have to accomplish it’s mission with no help from the Klingon ship.

Cut to the Abaddon in space with dialog between Tatenen and Kor

Tatenen congratulates Kor for succeeding in convincing Krug he wasn’t lying when he said he was trying to protect the Klingon transport ship. Then Tatenen tells Kor that what he must ask him to do next might get him kill, (an idea that Kor doesn’t seem to mind, for reasons we hear about shortly.)

Tatenen calls Krug again to tell him that part of his plan is to make it appear that the Abaddon is actually attacking the colony ship. Krug laughs and says, “Understood, Captain. Fortune favors the brave!”

Cut to the Gal Gath’Thong, the Romulan bird of prey that recently arrived on the scene.

The commander of the Romulan bird of prey receives a call from the shape shifter / Romulan Commander. He identifies himself as Lukeen (the name forced out of the Romulan commander during his interrogation) and says that Kor and Kirk attacked him and then escaped by transporter after gassing everyone in the crew but him.

Just a reminder to the members: Kor and the captured Romulan Commander were actually beamed back to the Abaddon, but McGivers stayed behind and tricked the ships computer into thinking he was the commander, so he could order it to flood the ship with sleep gas.

Now the Romulan imposter is communicating with the commander of the bird of prey, telling him that the crew of the Romulan scout is still out from the sleep gas (which is true), but that he’s injured and needs medical treatment (which is not true).

The Romulan commander of the bird of prey says he’s on the way to assist. Then he tells his helmsman to “wait ten minutes and then set course for the scout ship”.

(Author’s note: The real “Lukeen” doesn't outrank Tal, the commander of the bird of prey, but he has more seniority so, under ordinary circumstances, the junior defers to the senior officer. Anyway, Tal is just a tad suspicious, so he decides 10 minutes is long enough to wait. His instincts tell him that not all may be as it appears.

Cut to a conversation between Captain Tatenen and Kor

Kor says he’s willing to “die with honor” for the millions his sacrifice will save by preventing the destruction of the colony ship carrying the plaque cure. The Klingons have already lost millions over the years due to the plague.

~ This refers to the previous revelation that Kor caused the death of Tatenen’s wife, the medical researcher who was on the verge of developing a cure for the plague.

Cut to the Abaddon which is on impulse and closing in on the asteroid near which the Klingon transport ship is located, still with disabled engines.

First Officer Watson informs the captain that the “asteroid” seems to be “the dying remains of a neutron star”, and it’s producing strong gravity waves.

Captain Tatenen orders the firing of the ship’s main weapon, a powerful antiproton beam (which he refers to as “The Hammer”) to drill a hole into the asteroid’s core.

Page 9

Cut to the Abaddon in space, firing the anti-proton beam

Tatenen and Watson discuss how the beam will effect the condensed matter of the neutron star’s asteroid-sized core.

Cut to the Romulan scout where McGivers is located

Tatenen orders the transporter room to beam Kor over to the Romulan scout with the sleeping crew, so he can join McGivers, who still hears sounds from the closed door that indicate a lone “conscious crewmen” trying to cut through the door. When Kor materializes, McGivers has changed back to appear as Kirk, the way he did when he first beamed aboard with Kor, since the Klingon doesn’t know that “Kirk” is really a shape shifting imposter.

Kor explains to Kirk/McGivers that Captain Tatenen knows “the device” will have to be activated manually, and the Romulans will break in at any moment, so Tatenen wants McGivers to beam back to the Abaddon and let Kor make that sacrifice. Kor explains that he’s willing to lose his life if this turns out to be a suicide mission, because he feels he should atone for past deeds, and he’s determined to take the Romulans with him if he has to sacrifice his life.

“Kirk” reluctantly agrees to leave, but before calling the Abaddon he gives Kor an RPTC (Remote Personal Transporter Control) that will allow him to be beamed out before “the device” (a Higgs field generator) activates 5 seconds after a “deadman’s switch” is pressed and released. “Kirk” had planned on using it himself, but now he doesn't need it. A red button on the "panic switch", as he refers to it, will initiate a 2 second beam out which would save Kor’s life by transporting him to the nearby shuttle craft, the Galileo.

Unfortunately, when Kirk/McGivers calls the Abaddon to request a beam out for himself, he receives a weak partial-transmission which is cut off abruptly, apparently because of the asteroids gravity wave emissions. McGivers is told that it will take 2 minutes to beam him out. But the Romulans are only seconds away from breaking into the ship’s transporter room.

Cut to the Abaddon in space

The Abaddon is shown still firing its antiproton beam to punch through the asteroid/neutron star's core. Before the beam is finished, the dreadnought receives a near-unintelligible message from McGivers. Tatenen is told by Watson that a transporter lock is not possible because of interference from the asteroid’s gravity waves. Tatenen gives an order to have the drone that was released earlier assume a position that will allow it to transport McGivers.

Tatenen is told the drone will be in position in two minutes (which is why McGivers was told he’d have to wait two minutes to be beamed out).

Cut to the Abaddon in space

Suddenly the sensors indicate that the neutronium core of the asteroid is collapsing as a reaction to the heat caused by the antiproton beam, which has caused fractures in the mantle surrounding the core. Watson says the energy released will cause an explosion with the force of 1.5 billion nuclear weapons.

Tatenen orders Watson to go to Warp 1 to escape the blast, but he’s informed that the gravity from the neutronium core prevents a stable warp bubble from forming, and the impulse engines are not strong enough to break free of the neutron core’s gravity, which is pulling the ship towards it!

Tatenen discusses a plan to use the ship’s Higgs field generators to reduce the Abaddon’s mass even lower than they’re already doing (as described earlier) and thus lessen the pull of gravity.

Suddenly they’re interrupted by a transmission.

“Enterprise calling USS Abaddon. We are inbound with the Lexington. Please respond”.

Cut to Spock on the bridge of the Enterprise

The Abaddon warns the Enterprise to stay away from the asteroid because of the "neutron collapse". Spock mistakenly thinks this is an indicator that the Abaddon's neutronium armor is failing, whcih would cause a massive explosion, so he orders the Enterprise into a safe orbit above the asteroid; using its mass to shield them from the blast.

Cut to the Klingon ship, Korinar

Krug (captain of the Klingon ship) calls Tatenen and offers to lock onto the Abandon with a tractor beam. The two former enemy captains remark on how strange the situation is, considering their former animosity.

Flashback to several minutes earlier, with Kirk in his cabin aboard the Enterprise, resting on his bunk.

The door chime sounds and Janice Rand comes in to offer the captain refreshments. (And I’m quoting here when I say she literally offers him “coffee, tea . . . or me.”)

Kirk’s selects the third choice, and things get expectedly steamy . . . but unfortunately it was just a dream, and Kirk is awakened by the intercom when he’s called to the bridge. (But the scene is mighty excitin’, none the less.)

Cut to a close up of Captain Tatenen on the bridge of the Adaddon

Tatenen and First Officer Watson discuss using photon torpedoes to seal the tunnel which has drilled into the asteroid, hoping that will prevent the ship from being pulled in.

Page 10

Cut to Kirk on the bridge of the Enterprise

When Kirk reaches the bridge, Spock informs him that the Abaddon has used its anti-proton beam to drill a tunnel into an asteroid which (unfortunately) turned out to be the core of neutron star, and now the titanic gravity of the asteroid-sized mass is pulling the Abaddon into the tunnel.

Spock informs Kirk that towing the Abaddon out with tractor beam would require the Enterprise to be within 5.625 kilometers of the other ship, and the Enterprise might also become trapped in the gravity well. Kirk asks Scotty if they have enough power to pull the Abaddon out and still maintain their own shields. Scotty reluctantly states that they do, but they’d only have about ten seconds before the Enterprise would become trapped as well.

Cut to a dramatic rear view of the Abaddon, with the asteroid in the far distance.

Tatenen gives a series of complex commands which relate to the firing of the photon torpedoes that he hopes will close the tunnel.

Cut to the Adaddon firing photon torpedoes

Tatenen orders the helmsman to prepare for a maneuver he hpes will use the shockwave the torpedoes will cause to escape the gravity waves emanating from the tunne.

Cut to Sulu and Kirk on the Enterprise

Kirk orders Scotty to divert all power to the shields, and he tells Sulu to take the ship within 10 kilometers of the Abaddon. Spock informs Kirk that the Abaddon has fired 12 photon torpedoes at the “asteroid”, Sulu notes the Abaddon’s bow is now angled upward, possibly in an attempt to “ride the shockwave” up and out of the gravity well.

Cut to Kirk and McCoy and the Enterprise

McCoy informs the captain that he’s given the crew injections to counteract the radiation they’ll soon experience. Kirk suggests that Hyronalin gas be circulated through the ventilation system to counter the effects of gamma rays.

Cut to a view of the Enterprise exterior with text inserts

Scotty informs Kirk that their cloaking device is drawing more power than it should, so he recommends shutting it down to prevent it from “blowing the main energizer”. Kirk concurs, then he orders Uhura to notify the USS Lexington what the Enterprise is about to do. But while he’s giving the order, he’s interrupted by —

Cut to a view of the main viewscreen on the Adaddon’s bridge

A massive explosion is visible as the torpedoes detonate inside the asteroid, while the Abaddon’s shields deflect a “vast cloud of heavy metals exiting the tunnel mouth ahead of the main explosion”.

Tatenen orders the crew to hang on tight for the shock wave which is about to hit the ship. The wave washes over the ship and shakes it like a rag doll, tossing the crew around violently.

After the shockwave passes, Watson gives Tatenen a report on the ship’s condition (which is reasonably good, all things considered) and the conditions outside the ship. The temperature exceeds 100 million degrees from the plasma beam radiating from the explosion of the torpedoes within the 70 kilometer deep pit the Adaddon drilled into this strange asteroid.
