Space: 1999 remake will be called Space: 2099

Charlie Jane Anders

We've often wondered what you would call a remake of Space: 1999, the 1970s series about a Moonbase on the loose, and now we know.

The show is being remade by a team that includes the same studio that brought you the V remake, and they're calling it Space: 2099.

The real question is: How are they going to make the premise seem less scientifically ludicrous? How does the Moon travel to a new planet every week? Two possibilities suggest themselves:

1) It's a slow burn, in which most weeks the Moon is in interstellar space, and we focus on the romantic troubles and sexual escapades of the people in Moonbase Alpha. Not to mention their political disputes over who should be Commander.

2) There will be handwaving involving wormholes and interstellar jumps in time and space..
Probably, it'll be some combination of the two.

In any case, it sounds like Space: 2099 is in the early stages — there's no script, and nothing's been shopped to any networks yet.

Yet, there is a positive move toward it's development.

In February 2012, a new series, to be called Space: 2099, was announced as a reboot of the original series, Space: 1999, and was planned to be made by ITV Studios America in conjunction with HD Films.

In January 2014, the producers clarified that they are "not trying to make some 'dark and gritty' version of Space: 1999" but to instead "bring back to all science fiction fans that sense of awe, fear and incredible spectacle that is the unknown, unexplored universe".

On 17 May 2014, producer Jace Hall announced that discussions with "potential distribution partners" were ongoing but that the process was "not speedy".

In 2016, the original Space: 2099 reboot web site was taken offline, redirecting to the official ITV site. No official announcement, however, regarding the fate of the series was made by either ITV or HD Films at the time.[citation needed]

On 15 August 2018, Brian Johnson, who had been the special effects director for the original series, announced that the reboot was on track for production in the UK, pending "confirmation of the deal

Hopefully, this may come to be a reality.

I did include the original authors name in my post and I edited and added a bit of my own to make the post a mash of sources to make....in my own opinion a more concise report. I don't think the sources had anything else to add. I'll try to do better....Sorry.
