From an article on Yahoo Entertainment -

"One of the biggest movies in the world right now has already surpassed half a billion dollars at the box office in China without even having completed its second week of release yet.

That puts the movie, Wandering Earth, on par with some of the biggest big screen titles to emerge from the US in recent years, like Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War."

"The movie, a sci-fi epic that tells the story of people trying to save earth from being destroyed by the sun, is already the second-highest grossing film in China ever. Which should explain why Netflix just snatched it up, in a deal that will introduce the film to an even wider audience via the popular streaming giant."

"As far as Wandering Earth goes, it’s definitely an understatement to say a ton of work went into this blockbuster. According to Netflix, the film was given a production scale rarely seen in Chinese films and included post-production and special effects work that took two years. That included more than 10,000 specifically-built props and the employment of some 2,000 special effects shots, in addition to a “substantial amount of computer graphics shots.”

"According to a plot summary from Netflix, the movie is set in the distant future and involves the sun expanding into a red giant that threatens to destroy earth.

A team of heroes builds “ten thousand stellar engines” to propel earth out of the solar system in the hope of finding a new home in space, kick-starting a 2,500-year-long journey in which humanity fights for the survival of their “wandering earth.”
It is also the world's highest-grossing film of 2019 so far. "

The very impressive trailer is on YouTube -

There is a story I read years ago, and I still remember the title: "A Pail of Air". I don't remember the author's name, and I am too lazy to look it up.

In the story, the Earth is knocked out of orbit to become a rouge planet. The people in the story live in a makeshift bunker, and survive by going out in makeshift pressure suits and getting buckets of frozen air to thaw to breath.

That was by Fritz Lieber and first appeared in GALAXY.

It was also done on the radio program X-MINUS ONE in the early 50's. Good story!

Isn't it ironic that on this EARTH Day, that the most successful sci-fi movie ($2 billion in China alone) is this one about the end of the Earth by people who are going to save it by taking it to Alpha Centauri and ignoring that they'll be killing ALL life by freezing the planet solid!

THE WANDERING EARTH is now available on NETFIX streaming service in English.

Netflix’s official synopsis for “The Wandering Earth” reads: “The film is the story of a distant future in which the sun is about to expand into a red giant and devour the Earth, prompting mankind to make an audacious attempt to save the planet. The multi-generational heroes build ten-thousand stellar engines in an effort to propel Planet Earth out of the solar system, in the hope of finding a new celestial home. During the 2,500 year-long journey, a group of daring heroes emerge to defend human civilization from unexpected dangers and new enemies, and to ensure the survival of humanity in this age of the wandering Earth.”
