I remember seeing this when it first came out in the 70's and I LOVED the long shots! Robert Wise cut this like an older style, without all the flash cuts that you see in most contemporary films.

Also, it began with an overture of the main musical themes (the Ilya Love Theme if I remember correctly) before the picture began and the musical cues were right on. It was longer than the story called for, but keep in mind that we hadn't seen any new Star Trek in years....The long lingering scenes were beautifully executed and were a work of art.

Today's films are much faster paced and rely on more "action" to move the story.

I see that my two-dvd "Director's Edition" motion picture is just the standard 131 minutes long - but the second disc does, as well as retrospective documentaries, trailers, and TV commercials, have 5 additional scenes (from the 1979 Theatrical Version), and 11 deleted scenes (from the 1983 TV Version), so that sounds okay... .

I found slightly different running times.

Running time of the Theatrical version: 132 min.
Running time of the Director`s Cut: 136 min.
Running time of the ABC TV version: 143 minutes

Yes, the director's cut is the version to watch. On November 6, 2001, a Director's Edition supervised by Robert Wise was released on DVD and widescreen VHS, running 136 minutes. New CGI elements were made to several scenes by Foundation Imaging:- The landscape of Vulcan was changed to include a yellowish sky and new landscape.- The matte painting of the Golden Gate bridge in the scene where Kirk arrives at Starfleet Headquarters was replaced by a new CGI scene that shows Kirk's shuttle arriving at Starfleet.- A new CGI shot was inserted which shows V'Ger's second weapon vanishing before it could strike the Enterprise.- A new CGI shot reveals more about V'Ger's detail as it enter's Earth's orbit.- The shot where Kirk and his landing party step out onto the Enterprise Hull was totally redone to allow the entry of a CGI Bridge and to correct the look of the Enterprise in that scene.- The final Energy burst from V'Ger was extended by a few seconds to allow a new shot of the V'Ger vessel exploding into a burst of energy.- New opening titles were commissioned for the opening of the film. The opening titles now have a slight fading effect and are now seen over a background of stars.- The opening overture has been restored to its full length. A shorter version was seen only on home video versions.- The closing credits music is extended to allow for new credits for the director's edition.- Enterprise Computer Voice alarms were replaced by sirens in some scenes.- During the Transporter Accident scene, new console sound effects were added.

The ABC TV version is interesting since the movie seems shorter than the theater version even though it is 11 minutes longer; character interaction was added.

The original movie version is on blu-ray.
The director's version is available on DVD and VHS. Because of technical reasons it is not available on blu-ray.

The ABC TV version is available on VHS.

The Tron: Legacy Daft Punk Soundtrack Goes Perfectly With the Trippy Effects of Star Trek: The Motion Picture

BDT: 22 minute version of Star Trek Motion Picture with different music. Known as Star Trek Legacy. I love the Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack but the different music is interesting. Imgur.

By Andrew Liszewski, I09
A soundtrack can often make or break a film. Daft Punk' work on Tron: Legacy helped make that sequel mostly watchable, but it turns out that score works even better for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, as Patrick Collins discovered when he brilliantly mashed up both films.

Collins felt that Jerry Goldsmith's original Star Trek: TMP score had a lot of similarities to the work Daft Punk did back in 2010, although with a distinctly 70s feel. So not only has Collins re-edit modernized the film's soundtrack, which actually seems to better match Star Trek's trippy visual effects, he also cut down the film's runtime from two hours and 12 minutes to a fast-paced 22 minutes that really doesn't feel like anything important was left out.

I forgot to share this here before...

LINK TO TMP MICRO CIRCUITRY FOOTAGE
https://archive.org/details/StarTrekTheMotionPictureMicroCircuitry

Last year Rick Sternbach auctioned off a reel of 16mm rear projection footage created for ST:TMP. When I saw he was going to sell it, I asked him if I could digitize it for posterity on the Internet Archive, where I volunteer. He sent me the reel, I scanned it, and sent it right back. Anyway, the above link points to the archive.org scan, which captures the entire film clear out to the perfs (sprocket holes). A full description is in the record on the site. You can actually spot bits of this in the movie.

Has anyone seen the Star Trek The Motion Picture Warp Re-Edit version? (from the Digital Fanedits people) A clip of the opening titles can be seen on You Tube. I have read that it is a fan-edited version of Star Trek the Motion Picture with a few space shots from other Star Trek movies and there are no scenes on earth; it runs less than 2 hours. I have read that the way it is edited, Kirk is more forceful in this version.

PS I added the You Tube link, but removed them since the video is gone.

This film was visually marvelous, but was saddly lacking in the character development area. I would have liked it better if it had devoted more to a real "story", but I still can feast on the eye candy that it did provide!

Designing The Motion Picture's Engineering Section

The Engineering section of the refit Enterprise was supposed to be lodged on Decks 14 and 15, with controls and the horizontal intermix chamber on the lower level. To the port side of Main Engineering is a dilithium reactor room, where Spock died in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.......

The film was a box office success but a critical failure. Frequently pilloried for a slow pace and overlong visual effects sequences, some accuse it of nearly killing Star Trek while others point out that its box office gross, despite its dramatic drubbing, are what convinced Paramount to continue making Star Trek films at all, leading to an eventual return to TV.

Well, despite my feelings that this movie is a cinematic sleeping pill which ranks right up there with watching a VHS tape of Prince Charles and Princes Diana's wedding, I will admit that the above statement is undeniably true.

And for that I am grateful. Very Happy

I think that, somewhat unfairly, it was referred to as "Star Trek: The Slow Motion Picture," but as a franchise reboot/refresh, it worked...

ST TMP - The Enterprise - unused original music

Star Trek: The Motion Picture includes a very famous 6 minutes scene where we see the new Enterprise for the first time.

Did you know that the original music written for this scene was DIFFERENT than the music cue used in the final cut? This video shows you how the scene could look like with the original score.

BDT:I like both versions.

iI agree with Robert Wise. The music used in the movie is much better than the one Goldsmith first wrote. I've always loved that piece, and the one in the Youtube video is sort of "formless" but comparison.

I just finished watching The Wind and the Lion (1975) on DVD. In one of the scenes I caught some familiar-sounding soundtrack passages that brought to mind the Klingon theme from ST: TMP. Sure enough, Jerry Goldsmith wrote the score.
