In 1969, I read in school about one of the first habitat zoos. The animals were at ground level with a moat surrounding the habitat. The moats were 8 feet wide, by 8 feet deep. The new zoo was open about 6 weeks when a child asked a Zoo Keeper if it was true that Lions could easily leap 11 feet.

The new zoo was closed for remodeling.

They were lucky that Lions were perfectly content, as long as they were well fed, and had a place to sun themselves.

David.

My dad (Pye-Rate) says that he remembers that Tanner was let out of the cage so they could clean it and because he was so tame that although supervised he would walk around Woodland Park Zoo making friends with almost everyone he met. He even 'saved' a kitten by roaring at a dog who chased the kitten up a tree.

This frightened the dog's owner so much that Tanner wasn't allowed out again. The zoo adopted the kitten and she lived with Tanner until their deaths. The kitten was an orange tabby they named Stripes. Pye-Rate thinks that Tanner may have thought that Stripes was some sort of miniature lion.
