Should assault rifles be ILLEGAL except for the military and police?
Yes, the general public should NOT be allowed to own them.

In the future, will the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution still protect the Right to Bear Arms when technology literally turns them into "handheld weapons of mass destruction"?

Today the 2nd Amendment is mistakenly thought to give every citizen the right to own any kind of gun they can buy. But that wasn't what it was designed to do.

Ratified in December 1791, the amendment says:.
________________________________

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
_______________________________

And here's what the Second Amendment was intended to do, according to a website called Live Science.
_______________________________

James Madison originally proposed the Second Amendment shortly after the Constitution was officially ratified as a way to provide more power to state militias, which today are considered the National Guard. Having just used guns and other arms to ward off the English, the amendment was originally created to give citizens the opportunity to fight back against a tyrannical federal government.
_______________________________

Now we have assault rifles with drum magazines which hold 100 rounds, and with these a mass murderer can gun down dozens of people in under a minute!

We're wrong to think the Second Amendment was meant to guarantee every citizen the right to own weapons which are that lethal. Common sense dictates that we place some limits on this "right", now that guns are so much more destructive than the Founding Fathers ever imagined.

We've got to change the Second Amendment so that it can't be so horribly misused.

Screw the NRA! This isn't 1791, dammit! Shocked

Meanwhile the head of the NRA continues to rake in millions in membership dues and donations to spend on his and his wife’s lavish lifestyle. Not to mention laundering money for the Russians! The NRA should absolutely lose its tax exempt status NOW and it’s leaders should be thrown in jail for their actions.
