Amélie Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet And Writer Guillaume Laurant May Make Sci-Fi Film Big Bug For Netflix

It’s been six years since Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who gave us the one-two punch of Alien Resurrection and Amélie has directed a narrative feature film, but we may get a new film from him and Amélie writer Guillaume Laurant. The duo is reportedly getting back together to helm the sci-fi film Big Bug for Netflix.

During the press tour for the Nespresso Grand Prize winner at Cannes, the animated film I Lost My Body, writer Guillaume Laurant spoke about two upcoming projects he has with frequent collaborator Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Speaking with SCA – Scénaristes de Cinema Associés (the interview is in French and without subtitles), Laurant mentioned being in-talks to make a TV series, and also a Netflix film.

According to ScriptOclap, a subscription-based database for in-development projects in France, the Netflix film may be titled Big Bug, and it is described as “a story about artificial intelligence, a comedy with robots.” Honestly, that sounds pretty fantastic, and it is not the first time we’ve heard about this project. This does track with what we know. Talking with Indiewire earlier this year, Jeunet mentioned having a story he wanted to make that involved robots. “I have a story I want to make as a movie about artificial intelligence, but it’s difficult to find the money because it’s a comedy with robots,” he said. “So maybe it’ll be for Netflix, who knows. As a last resort, I will try Netflix.” According to ScriptOclap, the film will be produced by French production company Eskwad, and distributed by Netflix, filming between April and May next year.

The second project seems to be not as far in development as the robot comedy. According to ScriptOclap, it may be a TV series titled The Meaning of Desire. We have no further details, but any project reuniting Jeunet and Laurant is enough to warrant excitement.

Whoops! For some reason IMDb's TV news (gromon the date I posted it) was removed. Here is another article from https://hnentertainment.co/alien-resurrection-director-jean-pierre-jeunet-might-return-to-sci-fi-with-netflix-flick-big-bug/:

ALIEN Resurrection Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet Might Return To Sci-Fi With Netflix Flick Big Bug

French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet (The City of Lost Children, ALIEN Resurrection, Amelie) might be making a return to the science fiction genre with a new Netflix movie titled Big Bug that will be tackling artificial intelligence.

Our pals over at ThePlaylist seemingly pieced together the clues via recent interviews along with information posted by French production site ScriptToClap.

Big Bug would be a story about artificial intelligence, a comedy with robots.

Filming is said to take place between April to May in Paris, France.

Netflix has been making investments in both domestic and foreign projects from established filmmakers.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Jean-Pierre has tackled robots as ALIEN Resurrection featured an android named Call, played by Winona Ryder.

ALIEN Resurrection was yet to another troubled production in the ALIEN franchise as the film penned by Joss Whedon underwent multiple revisions along with tinkering from producers and Jean-Pierre changing things during the shoot.

Originally, the film was going to focus on a clone of Newt and not Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley as producers had been trying to remove the pricey actress from the franchise over the years.

The streaming service hasn’t made the project official but it would be kind of interesting to see Jeunet return to the genre.
