A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea.

When the ship's crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation.

Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms.

And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren't about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

________________________________

IMDB has __ trivia items for this movie. Here’s a few of the ones I found the most interesting, in the blue text. Very Happy
________________________________

~ In 2010 Amalgamated Dynamics (ADI) was hired to create the practical monster effects for the film The Thing (2011). However much to ADI's dismay, the studio had the majority of their work digitally replaced with CGI for the final cut of the film. In response to this, ADI used Kickstarter to fund this film, Harbinger Down, which features entirely practical creature effects created through the use of animatronics, prosthetic makeup, stop motion and miniature effects. There are zero computer animated monsters in this film.

Note from me: I wonder if the 2011 movie would have been better if the work done by Amalgamated Dynamics had been used.

~ The Chess Wizard computer used in John Carpenter's The Thing can be seen in a few scenes.

Note from me: And of course this is NOT a coincidence. Very Happy

~ When Sadie goes on deck with the whale song microphone, the case she opens to retrieve the gear is labelled LV-426. This is a reference to the planet from the movie Aliens, in which Lance Henricksen starred.

Note from me: I had to look up Lance Henricksen. He was Bishop, the "artificial life form".

~ The famous dipping birds from the Alien series can be seen in the background. Alec and Tom both worked on the Alien movies (but the first) with Stan Winston. And took them over as head visual effects artists after Stan's death.

Note from me: Another non-coincidence. Very Happy

~ In the beginning of the film the date is June 25 1982, this was the release date for John Carpenter's The Thing.

Note from me: Yep. Here's another one. Wink

~ When the crew first discover the craft, and investigate inside, Graff asks "Is that a man in there, or something?" This exact line was spoken by Doctor Copper in John Carpenters 'The Thing".

Note from me: I'm sensing a definite pattern. Cool

~ In the 1982 film John Carpenter's The Thing, Childs inquires about "voodoo sh*t" once it's made clear that a monster is among them.

In this film, Dock also inquires about "voodoo sh*t" shortly after the monster reveals itself to the crew.

Note from me: I get it. The producers wanted to make absolutely sure nobody mistook the plot for anything remotely original.

~ In the trailer, Lance Henriksen's character, Graff, says at one point, "We're gonna need a bigger bucket." That must be a reference to the famous ad-lib line from Jaws, "We're gonna need a bigger boat."

Note from me: Gee! Ya think? Rolling Eyes

~ In the trailer, Lance Henriksen's character, Graff, says at one point, "We're gonna need a bigger bucket." That must be a reference to the famous ad-lib line from Jaws, "We're gonna need a bigger boat."

Note from me: Well, my goodness! Somebody got all bold and nervy, didn't they? Shocked
