The Ron Howard original makes this one sequel seem just a tad less effective, but it does have it's own merits. The IMDB trivia items below suggest some of the reasons for this.
_____________________________________________

Producers Richard D. Zanuck and Lili Fini Zanuck, co-owned the rights to the sequel with 20th Century Fox. Initially opposed to the concept of a second film, they only went ahead with it out of a need to preserve the integrity of the original.

As it transpired, Lili, who was very much opposed to doing a sequel, had only nominal interest, as she was busy prepping her own directorial debut, Rush (1991).

Ron Howard passed on directing the film and directed Willow (1988) instead. He refused to have any association with the film, feeling concerned that the whole point of the first film would immediately be squandered.

Brian Dennehy is seen at the end of the film, reprising his role as Walter the alien leader. Dennehy agreed to reprise his role from the first film as a favor to his castmates, and accepted no payment for doing so.

_____________________________________________

This movie actually does a good job of continuing the story.

The whole "rescuing the alien" aspect does in fact seem appropriate to the events of the first movies. So, I'd rate this one as one of the more successful sequels.

Not a bad sequel at all considering how lousy sequels generally are.

Tahnee Welsh & Courtney Cox.
Very Happy

GREAT MOVIES FROM THE 1980s!

The 1980s turned out to be a sort of 2nd Golden Age of Science Fiction. This movie is an example. Here's why.
________________________________

Cocoon: The Return s easily the best science fiction movie of 1988 — but then, it hardly has any real competition. This was the worst year of the 1980s when it came to science fiction, with only seven films of that genre released! Sad

The only other contender would be Alien Nation. Even though it wan't great, it did have an interesting premise and a good cast.

The rest of the movies that All Sci-Fi has on its Chronological Index for 1988 are these less than stellar productions.

~ The Blob

~ Killer Klowns from Outer Space

~ My Stepmother is an Alien

~ Short Circuit 2

~ They Live

What movies do you remember from 1988, and which ones were your favorites? Cool

Amazingly enough, one year later — 1989 — we had an explosion of fine sci-fi movies. Here's some of the ones that All Sci-Fi has threads for.
________________________________

The Abyss (1989)

Arena (1989)

Back to the Future trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990)

Batman (1989)

Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

The Fly II (1989)

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989)

Robot Jox (1989)

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Wow! What a difference a year can make. I've seen and enjoyed all the movies on the above list, and I own DVDs of five out of the ten!

Obviously, it was a great year for science fiction fans!
