As Kolchak is exploring the old dark house there is the sound of a tea kettle hissing. Carl discovers it on a hot plate in a room upstairs.

He left a hot plate on when he was gone . . . .

Sometimes writers and directors just stick in things to liven up a scene, even when they're neither logical nor necessary.

The classic example: Frightened people are moving slowly through a dark, spook house. Suddenly a cat leaps out and screams like a banshee. It doesn't matter that we didn't even know a cat was around there somewhere . . . it's just real scary, right? So, the filmmakers feel free to stick it in.
