"The Astronauts" just premiered on the Nickelodeon Channel tonight, Friday 13, 2020.

Produced by Imagine Entertainment and Ron Howard.

Synopsis: Five untrained kids are accidentally launched into space prematurely by the A.I. on board the space ship Odyssey 2. Hilarity does not ensue.

Kinda came across this one by accident and the last minute.

I wasn't even sure if it was a live action or animated series?

Being a Nickelodeon program I assumed it would follow in the style of all their other live action TV shows. Aimed at kids, adults & kid actors play their scenes broadly & over-the-top, juvenile humor, that kinda stuff.

Thought I'd at least see what the visual FX & sets were, but probably not stay with the series because it would cater to kids and be on the silly side.

Boy, did I make an incorrect assumption on this impressive show.

The series is played totally straight by all the actors, and they do a fine job.

The production values from the sets & special/visual effects are superb.

Tonight's first episode has the kids frightened to death as they are inadvertently propelled into outer space. Samantha, who's mom is an astronaut, quickly takes control of the rest of the kids who are in a panic over their dilemma.

Meanwhile, Ground Control is in communication with the kids and comprised of the kid's parents, including a journalist who was there to report on the original planned mission by the adult astronauts.

Check it out, you won't be disappointed.

Wow . . .

Nickelodeon did a remake of Space Camp for the 21st Century!

Damn, this is almost as good as having Joe Biden beat you-know-who! Very Happy

I didn't know about this series until Pow made his historic post, so I missed the premiere. Fortunately it airs again tomorrow night, and I've set my 21st Century DVR to record it and all the episodes! Wink

God, I LOVE living in the future! The past sucked big time! Rolling Eyes

Enjoy the trailer below. It rocks! Cool

Matilda, the A.I. computer on Odyssey 2, is voiced by Ron Howard's daughter, Paige.

I DVRed the double episodes called Countdown and Day 1, but I haven't watched them yet because I want to have the entire first seaon so I can binge watch it!

I hate having to wait for the next episode in a season for a series I like!

Apparently, however, there will only be four episodes (counting the pilot double-episode as just one), so this "mini-series" will be done by December 4th.

Oh well . . . the good news is that I'll only have to wait two and half weeks for this "season" to be complete.

Youtube has a nice video about the making of this terrific series.

I kinda thought that some of their impressive sets for the Odyssey II might be part practical and part virtual.

From the video it appears that all their sets are practical, or at least most of 'em.

Last episode ended on a real exciting cliffhanger.

I'll be seriously disappointed if TA is not renewed.

Are you listening Nickelodeon?

Sad to report that The Astronauts has been canceled by Nickelodeon. It was a very entertaining & intriguing series, and they left off on a cliffhanger.
