One might also say that such beliefs are the result of what the Romans called abisaren belli.

(Wishful thinking . . . )

Okay....We don't want to believe in "real" aliens....Although we certainly spend a lot of time talking about literary and cinematic ones.

Here's a comment from a writer from the Virginia Beach (Langly) area...

I don’t think aliens exist. So I certainly don’t think they’ve ever visited Earth. But what the hell do I know? Maybe a lot less than I even realize. That much is clear after the last couple of years. Following decades of denial, the United States government has admitted unidentified flying objects (aka UFOs) are a common occurrence. And a new 60 Minutes report makes clear that some experts, who, unlike me, do know what they’re talking about, think aliens might already visit Earth. What’s really scary though is that’s potentially the least frightening explanation.

“Imagine a technology that can do 6-to-700 g-forces, that can fly at 13,000 miles an hour, that can evade radar and that can fly through air and water and possibly space. And oh, by the way, has no obvious signs of propulsion, no wings, no control surfaces and yet still can defy the natural effects of Earth’s gravity. That’s precisely what we’re seeing.”

Those chilling words come from Luis Elizondo. He spent 20 years running military intelligence operations for the US around the world. In 2008, the Pentagon assigned him to the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP). The department’s job was to “collect and analyze information involving anomalous aerial vehicles,” or UAPs. It’s a fancy term for what we think of as UFOs. And as we’ve been learning the last couple of years, those are way more common than we might guess.

Especially in the Virginia Beach area. Former Navy pilot Lieutenant Ryan Graves told 60 Minutes fighter pilots saw strange flying objects there “every day for a couple of years.” And these UAPs were also captured with radar and infrared, as well as with photographs. Something was up there.

It’s not like the Pentagon denies any of this any longer. The US has even acknowledged video captured of UAPs in Florida in 2019 are real and still as yet unidentified. Yet, that’s not nearly as troubling as the story two naval aviators shared about a strange aircraft they saw in Southern California in 2004. Their story sounds like the start of an alien invasion movie.

The United States reactivated its investigative department in 2017, in response to experts leaking some of these videos and high-level resignations. A report on its findings is coming. Unlike in the past, when UFO talk was taboo, Congress is expecting it and seemingly taking it seriously. But none of this means aliens really exist and are already here. These objects could be highly advanced technology from other countries. Which might be even more frightening, since they’re likely either spying on us or pose an immediate risk.

I don’t believe in aliens. But that might be the best explanation for these unexplained sightings.

With the fact that these UFOs, or whatever you want to call them are very real....What else do you think they could be???

A quote from Nick Pope , member of the UK Defence Ministry....

Quote:
Many of these incidents are expected to be further detailed in next month’s report. But even though it will be “unclassified”, it's still unclear exactly how much will come out.

“I expect a very drone-heavy narrative,” says Mr Pope, the former British civil servant.

“I don’t expect it’ll plunge into extraterrestrial visitation. If there is anything really juicy, it will probably be in the classified annex. Governments are just nervous and reluctant to say ‘We don’t know...’ because it makes them look weak and ineffective.

“But that may be the position we’re in.”

Wow, these are all interesting revelations. Thanks, Gord! Very Happy

However, I continue to wonder why an intelligent alien race would appear in our skies so frequently . . . but refuse for decades to make direct contact with us.

If these aliens are just studying us — with no real interest in our problems or our fate — then their activities are irrelevant to mankind. They offer no assistance to mankind, despite our global problems.

I short . . . these aliens are "about as useless at tits on a boar hog". They're simply dispassionate observes who fly around our planet without giving a damn if we live or die! Sad

Unfortunately, mankind's desperate need to be important in the Grand Scheme of Things causes us to yearn for a place in cosmos.

And yet, all these years of UFO evidence presents us with no reason to believe that aliens have any serious interest in contacting mankind on a direct basis.

UFOs might be alien spacecraft, but if we're no good to them . . . what good are they to us? Confused

Well Bud....Just perhaps...

The Prime Directive prohibits Starfleet personnel and spacecraft from interfering in the normal development of any society, and mandates that any Starfleet vessel or crew member is expendable to prevent violation of this rule.

and

As the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its normal cultural evolution is considered sacred, no Starfleet personnel may interfere with the normal and healthy development of alien life and culture. Such interference includes introducing superior knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable of handling such advantages wisely.

Starfleet personnel may not violate this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said culture.

This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation.

Or some such similar nonsense.

Still, it would be nice to know if someone is out there!

Here's what one person had to say----

https://www.yahoo.com/news/aliens-havent-landed-why-skeptical-090251254.html

What the 'UFO videos' really show

by MIKE WEST

However, close examination of the videos by myself and others over the three years since they were released has shown them to be far more mundane than first thought.
The "glowing aura" mentioned in the New York Times headline turned out to be a processing artifact common to thermal cameras.

The supposed impossible accelerations in the "Tic-Tac" video were revealed to coincide with (and hence caused by) sudden movements of the camera, leading to the conclusion that the object in the video was not actually doing anything special.

The video titled "Go Fast" was claimed to show an object with no heat source (and hence, no conventional engine) moving impossibly fast over the surface of the ocean.
But some 10th-grade trigonometry showed it was actually much higher than it seemed, creating an illusion of motion, and the actual speed was more like wind speed, meaning it was probably just a balloon.

The most compelling video, "Gimbal,” seems to show an actual flying saucer skimming over clouds then coming to a stop and bizarrely rotating into an aerodynamically impossible position.

But closer examination of this video showed that when the "object" rotated, other patches of light in the scene rotated.

The only possible explanation being that the rotation was a camera artifact, and that the "flying saucer" was simply the infrared glare from the engines of a distant aircraft that was flying away. An examination of the camera's patents revealed the gimbal mechanism responsible for the apparent rotation.

Since then, two more videos from the UAP Task Force were leaked. Both initially seemed amazing: a flying triangle and a zig-zagging submersible sphere.

But, like the previous three, they became more mundane under closer examination.

I found that the triangle looked and acted exactly like an out-of-focus airplane, and the sphere was shown not to zig-zag, probably to be another glare, and to disappear behind the horizon rather than under the water.

Given the disappointing mundanity of the video evidence, what are we to expect from the upcoming UAP report, due in June?

Well, UAPs represent a serious issue for the military. If aircraft incursions cannot rapidly be identified, or if a pilot cannot make sense of what they are seeing, or if radar returns show what looks like super-fast moving objects, then those are real problems.

There's also the inevitability that foreign adversaries are developing novel forms of drones for spying and combat purposes, which we will need to detect and counter.
These are all real issues, and that's what a comprehensive report should discuss, along with suggestions for better tracking and investigating such incidents.

Not really....Just looking at alternative solutions. The above explanations may "sound" reasonable....BUT how do they explain the radar implications? Those gun cameras "lock on" to real solid objects, not camera glitches.

Also, the above explanations are NOT really supported by the actual videos! There have always been "explainers" who find any logical pseudo explanations. In the 50's it was Dr. Menzel and his "temperature inversions" and in the 60's Dr Hynek and his "swamp gas (Before he became a believer) was a de-bunker as well.

This new crop of revelations are quite different.

But bring on the possible solutions!'

At the risk of being proven wrong and suffering complete humiliation, here's my prediction about today's long awaited and much-promoted "UFO report" from the government.

I think the gist of this big revelation will be nothing more than that the government finally acknowledges their decades-long ignorance about what all the unexplained UFO's actually are! Shocked

And that, ladies and gentlemen . . . is it. Rolling Eyes

In short, the government and the military are just as clueless as us about what UFOs are.

Gee! Ain't that tremendous news, folks?

So, as I've been saying all along, whatever these strange occurrences in our skies are, it is simply NOT logical to assume that these are spacecraft from distant planets many light years from Earth. I realize that we disparately WISH that's what they are . . . but we don't really know.

So, why am I so skeptical? Well, other than the fact that there's no logical reason to believe that faster-than-light travel is possible, here's why I'm a UFO doubter.

The two most compelling reasons for me to be so skeptic are the fact these so-called alien spacecraft are (a) too small to be interstellar vehicles, and (b) too chaotic in their behavior to be spacecraft sent here to make contact with mankind.

After all, why would advanced alien races send "drone-sized" vehicles to zip around our skies — while apparently doing nothing more than attract attention and cause confusion? Shocked

I'm sorry, folks, but I can't help wondering why these alleged aliens never seem to visit us in large, impressive spacecraft — either in the skies above or in Earth orbit, where NASA would detect them among the thousands of satellites they constantly keep track of? Shocked

Guys, I just can't believe that aliens from advanced alien races have spent the last 70 years flying around in small spacecraft while playing hide-and-seek with mankind for no logical reason!

Frankly, that just seems silly . . .

So, I simply can't get excited about a "government report" which states nothing more than that there ARE unexplained objects in our skies . . . but nobody really know what they are!

Seriously, guys, haven't we ALL known that since the first UFO reports in the late 1940s? Confused

From a NY Times report _

A highly anticipated government intelligence report on unidentified flying objects finds no evidence of alien spacecraft — but it also doesn’t say it’s not aliens, according to a new report.

Scores of odd aerial sighting in recent years that have baffled scientists and the military remain a mystery, according to a New York Times report Thursday night.
Citing senior government officials who have been briefed on the largely inconclusive finding of the report, which will be presented to Congress later this month, the Times also reported top-secret U.S. technologies have been all but ruled out in most of the incidents, leaving a major question hanging: So if they weren’t ours, what were they?

The report investigated more than 120 incidents over the past two decades, many from U.S. military pilots, with unusual sightings captured on video and sensors. A number of sightings described craft that flew with no discernible propulsion system, flying at speeds and making maneuvers that seem to defy physics.

If experimental U.S. aircraft are ruled out — as the report apparently does — that leaves two main possibilities: Either secret, advanced aircraft from other countries, most likely Russia or China; or something not of this Earth.

Russian and Chinese developments in hypersonic aircraft are a major concern to the U.S. military, and if the recent UFO sightings can be attributed to that, it would signal a major advance in technology beyond what the U.S. is capable of — and a major national security concern.

And while the possibility of extraterrestrial spacecraft may seem outlandish, the government report did not entirely rule it out, the Times reported.

An unclassified version of the report is expected to be presented to Congress before June 25. Officials admitted to the Times that the presence of redacted portions will do little to end speculation that the government is hiding evidence of aliens.

Whatever the aerial phenomena may be, the number of credible and unexplainable reports has transformed the issue of UFOs from crackpot to very serious, as the Washington Post and The New Yorker have recently reported.

“What is true, and I’m actually being serious here, is that there is footage and records of objects in the skies that we don’t know exactly what they are,” former President Barack Obama said in an interview earlier this week.

The 1956 documentary called Unidentified Flying Objects: The True Story of Flying Saucers (1956) ends with a chilling narration accompanied by on-screen text which concludes with the words below. (You can view it at the 1:29:00 mark in the video.)

I’ve always been impressed with the powerful closing statement in this no-nonsense treatment of the subject.
____________________________________________

Some kind of flying objects have been photographed in the sky. If they cannot be identified as objects known to man . . .

What are they?

If they are not man-made . . .

Who made them?

If they are not from this planet . . .

Where are they from?

____________________________________________

It’s ironic that the 1956 documentary makes an irrefutable case with the exact same conclusion as the 2021 government report. It took the federal government 65 years to acknowledge what the 1956 documentary proved conclusively.

_____ UFOs The True Story of Flying Saucers 1956
