The 1980s and 1990s were a step up for sci-fi movies after the weaker efforts that Hollywood gave us in the 1960s and 1970s — with notable exceptions, of course, like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Star Wars.

We got some marvelous concepts, like a cop's brain in a robot body, and a scientist conducting strange experiments to prove the power of the mind, and two shipwrecked soldiers from opposites sides who were marooned on an alien planet.

We even saw some fine stop motion in the Robocop movies.

Enemy Mine (1985)

Opening Statement: IMDB has several interesting trivia items for this production.

~ Author Barry Longyear reported at a convention that the studio insisted on adding a subplot involving a mine, thinking the audience would not realize that the "Mine" in the title was a possessive (as in "My Enemy") rather than an object.

Note from me: I can't help wondering what the location was in the story instead of a mine before they changed it.

Altered States (1980)

Opening Statement: IMDB has several interesting trivia items for this production.

~ Ken Russell has alleged in interviews that he was the 27th choice for director, stating that Warner Bros. only hired him after 26 other directors had passed on the project.

Note from me: The next few trivia items indicate that the studio would have done better with one of the first 26 choices to direct the movie.

Robocop 2 (1990)

Opening Statement: IMDB has several interesting trivia items for this production.

~ The shootout scene at the nuke labs is the Budweiser brewery. The same setting was used in Star Trek (2009) for various engineering areas of the Enterprise.

Note from me: I hated the fact that the studio used the brewery as the engineering section of the Enterprise. It seemed like such a "cheat". The engineering sections in TNG and Voyager are beautifully designed.
