I watched the cartoon as a kid...
The submarine in the cartoon was called the Voyager. Aurora came out with a model kit of it in 1969 which I had to build of course. That model has long since disappeared, along with all the other models from my childhood; however, in 2009 Moebius Models re-released the kit with its original box artwork. I snapped it up quick and set about building a new and better Voyager for my model collection. This time I added LED lights and some aftermarket decals to it. Here are a few pics...

Well, yeah, sort of -- but the mental image I got was of a miniaturized team roaming around the innards of a computer, being careful not to get electrocuted while they try to make some kind of change in the circuits that will thwart the evil computer's scheme to force the world to abandon Adblock Plus -- something equally horrendous. 
Pow's suggestion is really very interesting, because we've seen supercomputers that set up ironclad defenses against online interference, as well as physical defenses against direct tampering.
But a computer would be just as vulnerable against microscopic people inside it as the human body is when infected by a virus!
As for the environment our team would be exploring, check out these actual pictures of computer circuits. Good lord -- futuristic architecture and gigantic lanDscapes!
They're beautiful.

The first picture, too. The chips look like buses or panel vans at a round building.
Imagine a movie in which a team is flying around in the Voyager (like your model, not the Star Trek ship) over Circuit City , looking for the right circuit board where they can modify or sabotage the giant evil computer.
The first thing I thought of when I saw this picture of a circuit board --
-- was this screen grab from the Disney Science Fact program called "Magic Highway USA" --
And the picture below from the Fantastic Voyage cartoon series --
-- resembles the art style in this screen grab for the same Disney program.

Nice build, but, wow, does that ship's features change from shot to shot in the show!

You did a beautiful job on that model. How in the world did you paint so much detail on those tiny figures?

Well, that's typical of Filmation's low-budget, made-for-TV animation. They didn't need it consistent, they needed it Tuesday! |

I did quite a bit of work on the figures that came with the kit which had very soft details. I'll post a separate thread on my Voyager model over in the models section and add the link to it here when I'm done. |

Until you posted about the cartoon series recently, I'd never heard of it! And when I clicked on your link to the Youtube video, I discovered that they've got entire episodes. The one at the link below has a terrific picture, but I'm not sure the other episodes look quite as good.
But I intend to watch 'em!

I've never read the book, but I just finished reading a synopsis on Wiki. Looks like it could be quite an interesting addition to the "shrunken people" sub-genre of science fiction.
It needs a catchier title, though. How about Honey, I Shrunk the Grad Students? |

I just read the Wikipedia synopsis, and I wasn't very impressed with the profusion of murder plots and cover-ups and wacky plans to shrink people and then kill 'em to hide various crimes.
In spite of the "shrinking" aspects of the story, it's just a complex Perry Mason episode!
The Case of the Reduced Researchers
The Case of the Teeny Tiny Technicians
The Case of the Itsy Bitsy Victims
The Case of the Micro-Murder's Mini-Methods
And so forth . . .
