This is exciting! The idea that dry ice occurs naturally on Mars and can be used to power very simple but efficient power stations is exactly what the colonists will need!

Science Fiction connections for this Science Fact

There have been plenty of movies about Mars — some good and some bad. Here's a few good ones that the article above made me think of. Enjoy the trailers, and feel free to discuss these movies right here or in their threads by clicking on the titles.

And add your own suggestions, too!
Very Happy

Quote:
Blocks of dry ice are able to levitate above hot surfaces protected by a barrier of evaporated gas vapour.

This takes me back to high school Physics class. We were shown a series of films that demonstrated various physical principles. For demonstrations involving conservation of momentum, they often made use of "hockey pucks" made of dry ice. These were placed on a table that had a sheet metal top. The evaporation of the dry ice created a gas buffer between the puck and the sheet metal, allowing the pucks virtually frictionless movement.
