It’s easy to love science fiction when it presents stories like the three below.

~ Giant stop-motion robots batte is out when countries wisly choose not to wage war.

~ A man pays for unique vacation that doesn’t require him to leave home.

~ A Star Trek with movie the TOS cast that comes the closest to the original series in terms of the story and the way the characters are presented.

This is one fine little movie, and it's a shame that Empire International Pictures went bankrupt during the production. Otherwise we might have had a few sequels.

However, it is marred by serious creative difference between screenwriter Joe Haldeman and director Joe Gordon, Haldeman tried to make the story more serious and scientifically accurate, but Gordon had other ideas.

Gordon later realized that Haldemen was "writing a movie for adults that children can enjoy", while Gordon had been "directing a movie for children that adults can enjoy."

David Allen created the fine (but few) stop motion scenes, and the music by Frédéric Talgorn is a real plus.

Robot Jox is the perfect second feature for Empire Pictures equally enjoyable sci-fi film from 1989, "Arena". However, even though "Robot Jox" is available on DVD and Blu-ray, "Arena" is still only available on (dare I say it?) VHS tape.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, Mars, an ancient alien pyramid with an instant atmosphere machine.

What's not to like? If they'd thrown in a mutant midget hooker with three boobs, this movie would be perfect.

Wait! It's got that too!

Story wise, the best thing about this movie is the way Arnold thinks he's a good guy, then finds out he's a bad guy who's just faking it, then decides the real him is the fake him so he just keeps on being a good guy.

Who's says people can't change. You gotta love it!

Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country (1991)



Director Nicolas Meyer does another fine job of steering the Enterprise back on track after those less worthy movies caused it to be lost in space since The Wrath of Khan.

Kirk really gets to act like Kirk in this one, right down to seducing a female alien . . . who turns out not to be female! Or is she? With shape shifters, you never know.

The presence of Captain Sulu is a genuine delight to Trekkers everywhere. In fact, all TOS hands are on deck and ready for action in a story which, thankfully, is focused on something we all understand -- those "damn Klingon bastards" -- who killed Jim's son and their tricky political maneuvers.

Bones gets to bust out of prison with Jim, Chekov gets to practice pronouncing V's as W's, and Spock gets to mind meld with Kim Cattrall, the secret erotic fantasy of every Trekker.
