And for an average singer like Nancy Sinatra . . . well, if her name were Nancy Shlabotnik, she would have been lucky to have a career in insurance or real estate. I mean, the girl could carry a tune, but she sang about as well as I do in the shower.

She did look pretty hot in boots, though.

That version of "Sukiyaki" (actually titled " I Look Up When I Walk") is cute, but I prefer the original. It's a very pretty song.

Sadly, the singer Kyu Sakamoto died in the crash of JAL Flight 123 on August 12, 1985. The Boeing 747 suffered explosive decompression (caused by an improperly repaired pressure bulkhead), lost most of its vertical tail and all its hydraulic controls, and slammed into a mountainside. Sakamoto was 43 years old.

And now for something slightly different: Belgian rockabilly!

So...do you all remember what it was like to be young and in love?

Not me! I'm just too old Smile. But I know that I must have been young and in love at some time. I have old letters and photographs from the 1970's.

And the music triggers warm fuzzy thoughts.

We should not forget great bands with little notoriety.

Here a couple of gems from 1968. This fellow got very little recognition for this.

A memorial post.

Laura Branigan has been gone for over 10 years! Are you kidding me?! Turns out, she would actually be older than me; having been born in 1957. The one benefit of dying young is eternal youth.

Here's a great song fronted by uber-hot Mariska Veres. Incredibly Mariska did not speak English and apparently learned this song phonetically. She died in 2006.

Yvonne Barrett was a favorite of Australian troops fighting in Vietnam. She would be murdered by her ex-husband...a one time member of the ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam).

Maybe that's because Bill Cosby sang about as well as a typical drunken customer at a karaoke bar.

Why is it that every model wants to act, every actor thinks he can sing, every clown wants to play Hamlet, and everybody wants to direct?

If I ever win the lottery, I will recreate Novello's night club with a strict dress code and over 35 age requirement.

A couple of my old favorites... The first was a novelty song by James Darren in his glory days (before his hair turned gray and he appeared as a holographic lounge singer on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; for that matter, even before he appeared in Time Tunnel with his hair still dark).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7RtA0ppKXw

This one's from Jack Jones back in 1965, the year I graduated high school. No one ever heard it on the radio but me (at least no one who's ever heard me sing it at karaoke).

Despite his grey hair, James Darren is one of those old guys who is amazingly well-preserved Smile.

I've been known to sing-a-long with GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD which I suspect was his biggest "hit". Mind you, I'd never sing it on karaoke night...anybody who has heard my voice knows I'd be banned for clearing the place!

Serendipity... When I was checking out your link, Brent, this other listing caught my eye.

Dodie Stevens is a local resident. ("Local" being local to the karaoke venue. We live 40 minutes away.) She and her daughter have shown up at karaoke a couple times. Gary Puckett also lives somewhere in the neighborhood.

I actually posted that Dodie Stevens clip on another board a few months ago. And, somewhere, I've seen a clip of Dodie Stevens and her daughter singing.

That's the kind of thing I miss. I mean...I know it...I'm an old guy now. Not REALLY old but I'm 56 which is now on the downward slope from middle age. I miss fun, teenage music which did not require lyrics about having a big booty!

There are teenagers singing lyrics today that I can't even type on a bulletin board because they would ge me banned.

Yes, it's true, I have turned into my father Smile.

Speaking of Gary Puckett: what a hugely under-rated singer. He was a star who might have been a superstar with a few more breaks. His voice was as good as ANY voice during that era and he's still active. I like a LOT of stuff from the 1950's, 60's and 70's because the music entertains me even if the singers are mediocre (think: Gary Lewis and The Playboys). But Gary Puckett has SERIOUS singing chops.
