This was a three-page story treatment written by Ray Harryhausen and set in the present day.

The coastguard are skimming the water by plane and find a man and woman who have been adrift for several days. Both are brought onboard the coastguard plane, but remain unconscious.

Amongst their belongings is a diary containing an entry describing a journey on a freight ship from Shanghai to the US and the discovery of a flying saucer in the ocean. When the coastguard crew find the saucer and bring it on board, the alien inside escapes and attacks them. Some of the crew escape, as do the two passengers who had just been rescued.

Harryhausen: The Lost Movies by John Walsh.

Sidebar: This could have been a very good film with the story elements that Ray has here. The concept pre-dates IT! The Terror From Beyond Spac and the movie Alien.

Jonny Quest even had a episode titled "The Sea Haunt" involving a sea monster rampaging on board an abandoned ship. But Ray was there first with his idea.

I am curious as to some of the plot points in his story treatment. Just how big is this space saucer? How could they manage to bring it on board the plane?

If Ray is planning that the plane has alerted a Coast Guard ship and that they found the saucer, you'd still have the same questions.

How big a ship is the Coast Guard vessel, and how do they lift the alien craft on board? Does the story mostly take place in flashback aboard the freighter? That would make more sense.

In any event, this premise had merit.
