This is another topic that I'm importing from a forum that I used to post on. As happens on the 'net, things change and I eventually stopped posting on the forum where I used to post my Blu-ray report.

This is pretty simple stuff...basically just a look at the Blu-ray Discs that I have recently purchased. Of course, anybody is welcome to add their own acquisitions. I buy more than just sci-fi movies and you can see some of my collection here. BTW, you will note that I use the abbreviation "BD" for Blu-ray Discs. This is the only abbreviation officially recognized by The Blu-ray Disc Association which sets standards for Blu-ray production.

Some time ago, I started keeping what I called a "photo database" of my Blu-ray collection. I also have a standard database listing for my discs but sometimes it's easier to review my collection by looking at the pacakage art. So I photograph my collection in groups of 15 discs because 15 discs will reasonably fill a photographic frame.

I just received 4 discs in the mail today and I have added them to other recent disc purchases in order to photograph this lastest entry in my photo database.

One thing you rarely see in my collection is very modern movies or very common movies. I don't need to spend money on something that is on TV every day.

Looking at the corners of the above photo, you can see a range of interests. GRADUATION DAY is a satisfying 1980's slasher. SEPARATE TABLES is a 1958 British film based on a stage play (the Brits love turning stage bound plays into stage bound movies). It stars my beloved Rita Hayworth so I had to add it to my collection. Moving to the bottom corner we see THE BUBBLE in 3D...but I don't have a 3D TV so I will once again prevail on my neighbour who has a 3D Blu-ray setup Smile. Finally, in the remaining corner, THE BLACK PIRATE, a silent film.

Among other things of note are a couple of limited edition Blu-ray Discs: THE BLOB (1988) and HOLIDAY IN SPAIN with Diana Dors in Cinerama Smilebox.

Nice collection, Brent. I do admire a fellow movie lover who values his library.

Oh...

Batgirl loves me and I have proof!

Last year Yvonne Craig appeared at her FIRST EVER fan convention in Canada...which happened to be here in Winnipeg.

Except for the grey hair, she looks surprisingly like the Yvonne Craig we remember from almost 50 years ago. She was a real sweetheart; very nice and pleasant to talk to.

I got her to sign the artwork insert from my IN LIKE FLINT Blu-ray (she played the part of a Russian ballerina in the movie). She was surprised the movie was on BD and she passed it around to her entourage for inspection.

That gal is insanely hot!

And I'm insanely jealous . . . Confused

But I suppose you deserve one of these, so I'll give it to you anyway . . . even if it is your 20th EDCA.

Deluxe Emerald Duck Call Award for ten great posts!

Another entry in The Blu-ray Report.

Now, don't think I just went out and bought another 15 movies! But I've been buying BDs for almost 8 years so I have a backlog of titles in my database.

From a sci-fi perspective, THE BAMBOO SAUCER may be the most interesting title. I don't know if it's received much mention around here. It's a nice, low budget mix of cold war adventure and sci-fi. Always good to see Dan Duryea and Lois Nettleton.

And I'm a big fan of the ORIGINAL HAIRSPRAY. No, this isn't the recent movie with John Travolta (which I also enjoyed). This is the original John Waters film circa 1988. It inspired a musical stageplay and that stageplay would be the basis for the 2007 movie. The 1988 film has a wonderful raw, kitschy edge...as we would expect from John Water.

SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE: A film predicated on the idea that a group of college girls and their football player boyfriends are incapable of outrunning a middle-aged man carrying a large, cordless drill. Hmmm.

Let's see now . . . lots of tempting items here . . . ummmm . . .

I want to borrow that one and that one, and . . . that one and that one. Very Happy

I'll send your T-shirt in a nice box, and you can just attach the stamps and the stick-on label with my address, both of which I'll include in a envelope. Then you can send me the Blu-rays I'll name in a PM.

Yes, that should work nicely. Thanks, Brent!

I've only recently started buying Blu-rays. At this point I'm still being picky, replacing only my favorite DVD movies when the price is reasonable. Or if the movie is recent and has lots of really nice detail and the BD is reasonably priced (I usually wait for the price to come down from the initial release), I'll go directly to BD instead of buying the DVD.

One of the unanticipated bonuses of my transition to Blu-ray is the thrill of the hunt Smile.

Shopping for odd discs and the best deals can be a lot of fun. It's a skill just like being a "real" hunter. You learn to track price patterns...which studios discount their discs after a couple of months, what kind of discs get sold as loss leaders, what disc will show probably show up in an amazon lightning deal...?

The biggest sucker deal is a BD of a new theatrical movie on release day. A movie that was in the theater 6 months ago might come out on Blu-ray for $24.95...and be sold for $6.99 two months later.

Funny thing; I just found a list of the top 100 Blu-ray Discs of all time (based on sales) and I don't own ONE. Literally...I don't own a single one of the top selling BDs. I'm so heavily concentrated in smaller movies and catalogue movies that I own no modern blockbusters and I own over 750 Blu-rays!

I'll add that there are some Blu-ray Discs for which there is no true DVD equivalent.

Case in point: BYE BYE BIRDIE which is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time.

This was originally released on DVD in the dawn of the format in 1999. It was later reissued using the same old transfer but dropping the full frame version and changing the disc art.

Sony/Columbia did sparkling 4K remaster which they licensed to Twilight Time for Blu-ray release. The modern 4K remaster has not been released on DVD. So if you buy the BD, you get a modern remaster in HD with DTS-HD Master Audio lossless sound. If you buy the DVD, you get a 20 year old transfer with mediocre sound.

Another one is OKLAHOMA!. The 2 disc Blu-ray set includes the movie in Todd-AO. Todd-AO was a 30 frames-per-second format. The DVD spec does not support playback at 30 fps...but Blu-ray DOES support 30fps playback. So you can't watch a proper Todd-AO presentation on DVD.

Ok...who wants to hear...

THE BEST NEWS IN THE HISTORY OF BLU-RAY!!

With little fanfare, Olive films have announced the February 17 release of BEACH BLANKET BINGO and MUSCLE BEACH PARTY. I can't tell you how much I love these movies. This is the life I wanted to live. My only slight issue is: What happened to the original 1963 BEACH PARTY?

This is my resin model of Marta Kristen as the mermaid "Lorelei" from BEACH BLANKET BINGO.

I was thinking of something to post and I realized I hadn't updated this thread for awhile so here's a pic of some more of my collection.

Is ok for a person to own BDs of both BABES IN TOYLAND and RAPE OF THE VAMPIRE? Is that something that gets you put on a special list?

Those films showing the "Redemption" name are all by French director Jean Rollin. As I recall, they are all in original French with English subtitles.

Of special note in this batch is NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD. This siginificant classic has not be released on Blu-ray in North America. Odd but true. A region-free UK release is fairly easy to find online but the best Blu-ray release is the Japanse release. For some reason, Japan and North America are both Region 1. The one shown here is the Japanese disc which I bought from CDJapan. If you catch a sale, it's quite reasonable...think it cost me about $25.00 to Canada.

Journey to the Far Side of the Sun... I had always figured they cast Roy Thinnes as the astronaut because he didn't wear a part in his hair. Very Happy

I'll keep an eye peeled for Silent Running.

Thus the doppelganger switch wasn't noticed right away.
