I watched this four-hour Discovery channel documentary today, and I thought you guys would enjoy this clip from it, which includes part of the Bob Gale interview, along with other key moments. Very Happy

The documentary is wonderful. If follows the a project to build a 100% screen-accurate replica of the DeLorean, which will be delivered the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.

"Back To The Future" DeLorean time machine replica up for sale

Stephen Edelstein April 3, 2021

A replica of the DeLorean time machine from "Back to the Future" is being auctioned off for charity, with proceeds benefiting the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, started by the movie's star, who has Parkinson's disease.

This isn't one of the original movie cars, but it does sport a screen-used "flux capacitor," the part that enables time travel in the story. The flux capacitor on this car was used by a stunt car in all three "Back to the Future" movies, according to the listing. As in the movie, the car is also rigged for remote control, the listing said.

Aside from the other "Back to the Future" paraphernalia, including giant vents on the back and "time circuits" in the cockpit, the DeLorean appears mechanically stock. That means a 2.8-liter V-6 sits behind the driver (and flux capacitor). It's connected to a 3-speed automatic transmission.

The DeLorean DMC-12 was the brainchild of former General Motors executive John Z. DeLorean, who decided to start his own car company after a successful career at GM that included launching the Pontiac GTO. While the DeLorean initially impressed with its gull-wing doors and stainless-steel body panels, it was a financial failure.

By the time the DMC-12 got its starring role in "Back to the Future," the DeLorean Motor Company was already history. However, the movie and its two sequels cemented the DMC-12 in popular culture.

That almost didn't happen, though, as the original plan was for the time machine to be a refrigerator. A revived DeLorean Motor Company is planning to build a limited run of new cars, some of which could end up as time-machine replicas too.

The auction site estimates the value of this replica at $500,000, which seems a little steep considering that an original movie car sold for $541,000 at a charity auction in 2011. The auction, which includes other "Back To The Future" memorabilia, ends on April 15.

‘Back to the Future’ “Reboot” Coming In 2023!

Posted on July 11, 2022 by Daniel Roberts

There is actually a Back to the Future “reboot” heading to theaters in 2023, but it’s not what you think. Based off the classic 1985 movie of the same name, Back to the Future: The Musical is about to take Broadway to 88 miles per hour and beyond!

After experiencing cancellations in the UK due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Back to the Future: The Musical is finally coming to Broadway. However, it’s currently playing at London’s Adelphi Theater in the West End, where it is has been wowing fans of the film for nearly a year.

You might wonder why we’ve referred to the musical as a “reboot” — while the incredible stage production is indeed a musical version of the iconic 1985 film which stars Michael J Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as Doc Emmett Brown, it is also very much its own interpretation.

Back to the Future: The Musical features everything you love about the film — the characters, the set pieces, songs such as “The Power of Love” (performed by Huey Lewis and the News for the movie), and yes, of course, the awesome time-travelling DeLorean.

This one is enjoyable too, but I can't figure out why they cast Biff as a chubby loudmouth, instead of the broad-shouldered bully he was in the movie. Confused

And the guy who plays Doc Brown is too young, and his hair it too short. Oh well . . .

Oh man! Daddy-io...This stuff is WILD!

First of all ...the BACK TO THE FUTURE trilogy films were "Perfect" movies in every way! Even with the false start and hic-cups along the way, all three of the films were absolutely PERFECT as shown on the silver screen!

This musical is fantastic! It maintains the heart and spirit of the original in a respectful and totaly entertaining way! It is more an extension of the concept. The music . . .the songs are also perfectly designed to augment the story.

I can't wait to see it on Broadway!

Gord, I could NOT agree more! Cool

These three movies are timeless and enjoyable, even after 3+ decades. The casting is perfect, and the stories are more fun than a barrel full of time-traveling monkeys!

Two Big Paradoxes in Back to the Furture

I LOVE the paradoxes that time travel movies often include! (Hey, don't we all?) Laughing

Below are two paradoxes that most folks aren't aware of.

______________________________________________

Pardox #1 ~ Marty’s New Family Mr. Green

When Marty comes out of his bedroom at the end of Back to the Future, he’s surprised by the tasteful new interior of his home, as well as his new-improved family.

But why? After all, in this new time line he grew up in this house, and with these people! Why is he so surprised?

The answer is simple: Robert Zemeckis knew the audience would be confused if Marty’s memories of his life suddenly changed — the way the memories his family changed in the new time line. So, Zemeckis simplified things a bit for the sake of making an entertaining movie. Very Happy

But wait a minute . . . Confused

Wouldn’t Marty’s memories actually remain the same anyway? After all, his life took place in the former timeline, but his family’s lives took place entirely in the new timeline created by Marty’s appearance in 1955. He caused all the changes in the original timeline which resulted in this very different “present’ we see at the end.

Obvious Conclusion; A time traveler’s memories will not be altered by changes he causes in the timeline. The changes will affect everyone else — but not him, because his life was spent in the original timeline. That's why Marty and Doc were shocked by what Bif did to Hilldale by drastically altering the -timeline.

With that in mind, consider this little gem. Cool

Paradox #2 ~ Where’s the “other” Marty? Confused

When Marty returns to 1985 in the Delorean and runs to the mall so he can save Doc from being shot, he witnesses his “earlier self” vanish in the DeLorean when it goes back to 1955.

Naturally we assume that this “earlier Marty” is the same one who is watching the DeLorean vanish as he stands at the edge of the parking lot.

But hold on a second.

The changes in this timeline have already taken place! That means the DeLorean is actually being driven by the “new Marty” — the one who grew up with the family we see the following morning! Shocked

How do we know this? Confused

Because the former “Twin Pines Mall” is now called the “Lone Pine Mall” It changed when Marty ran over one of the two pine trees next to the farmer's driveway back in 1955, when Marty escaped from the shot-gun wielding old man!

Therefore, the “new Marty” we see vanish in the DeLorean does indeed have memories of growing up with the new-improved family — NOT the memories of the dysfunctional family which the original Marty grew up with.

Furthermore, his experiences back in 1955 will be altered by the fact that his life with the "new family" was very different than with the original dysfunctional one. So, to some degree, this "new Marty" is a different person than the one we see throughout the movie!

But does that mean the “new Marty” will eventually return in the Delorean? And does that also mean that he’s the “real” Marty — the one who should now be living with the happy family in 1985? Shocked

If that idea sounds ridiculous, remember that in Back to the Future II we see two Martys in numerous scenes — the first Marty who accidentally came back to 1955, and the second Marty who came again to retrieve the Sports Almanac.

So, the idea that two Martys from different timelines might end up together in 1985 . . . is not impossible!

Wow! See how much fun intelligent and imaginative people can have with Temporal Paradoxes!
I love 'em!

False “Mistakes” in the Back to the Future triology

Over the years I’ve given this movie a great deal of thought, and I’ve discovered several “errors in logic” which the plot makes. But director Robert Zemeckis apparently hoped the audience would either overlook or forgive these. He simplified the complex concept of time travel for the sake of his non-sci-fi loving audience.

However, in some cases I realized that several of these “errors in logic” were not errors after all when a person examines the movie’s complex premise carefully. Let's call these apparent errors in logic "False Mistakes".

Here’s what I mean. Mr. Green
______________________________________________

False Mistake #1 ~ The deserted crash site at the train track

In the first Back to the Future, nobody was in the area around the train tracks where the DeLorean was smashed by the train. So, why weren’t the police and railroad officials swarming around, investigating the crash site?

Why This Was Not a Mistake - Marty and Jennifer returned to the site a few hours after the crash — long enough, in fact, for the initial investigation to be completed. The actually clean-up of the area was probably scheduled for the following morning.

The fact that no bodies were found could be attributed to the fact that the train engineer saw Marty leap out of the car. After all, he was blowing the train’s horn to warn the occupant of the car to get out the way. So, the authorities assumed the driver fled the scene to avoid being arrested for being on the track and causing the accident. Very Happy

False Mistake #2 ~ The new timeline in 2015

When "old Biff" returned to 2015 in the DeLorean after delivering the sports almanac to "young Biff" in 1955, the timeline had changed dramatically, starting in 1955 and continuing up to 2015 (and beyond).

So, wouldn’t the neighborhood where Old Marty lived be changed in some way because had Biff turned Hill Valley into the horrible place we see when Marty and Doc went back to 1985? Shocked

Why This Was Not a Mistake ~ The scene of Biff apparently having a heart attack and collapsing after getting out of the DeLorean when he returned was actually an edited version of the original scene — in which Biff fades fades out of existence!

The DVD commentary which goes with the deleted scene explains that at some point after 1985, Loraine finally decided stop being abused by Biff Tannen . . . so she shot him! Shocked

After that happen, things would have then improve dramatically in the horrible version of Hill Valley after Biff Tannen’s dictatorial control collapsed. And by 2015 the situation would have greatly improved. Very Happy

This means the version of 2015 we saw in the original timeline, before Biff stole the Delorean, would now closely resemble the new timeline when he returned! Very Happy

False Mistake #3 ~ The Delorean's empty gas tank.

Why didn't "Western Marty and Doc" just siphon the gas out of the DeLorean which Doc had recently hidden away in the mine?

Why That Wouldn't Work ~ This one is simple. Gas can only be stored for three to six months.

Knowing this, Doc must have drained the gas from the DeLorean before hiding it in the mine.

However, he might have found some use for the gasoline in his blacksmith shop before it became inert. Perhaps his huge "ice making machine" was powered by it — in which case, there probably wouldn’t have been much gasoline left by the time Marty arrived in 1885.
Sad

False Mistake #4 ~ The Busted Fuel Pump

When Doc and Marty were trying to find a substitute for gasoline that would power the DeLorean after the Indian arrow punctured the fuel line (a highly unlikely event Rolling Eyes), they tried to use some sort of rot-gut, high-octane whiskey.

Unfortunately, it blew the fuel pump right out the car. Shocked

What's never mentioned in the movie, however, is the fact that the other DeLorean was hidden in the mine shaft so that "1955 Marty and Doc" could find it and make the necessary repairs!

So . . .why didn't "Western Marty and Doc" just take the fuel pump from that DeLorean, and then let "1955 Marty and Doc" replace it in 1955? Confused

Why That Wouldn't Work ~ Well . . . obviously a fuel pump for a DeLorean would not have been available in 1955. Embarassed

Gentlemen, I love analyzing the concepts presented in movies like Back to the Future, the way I have in this post. And I really appreciate the contributions by the members of All Sci-Fi who share my love for such intellectual exercises.

But I’ve struggled for many years to find more members who share this love.

Unfortunately, people like us seem to be very rare. Sad
