Amos Burke (Gene Barry) is a millionaire. He is also Captain of Los Angeles Police homicide division. Why? Because catching criminals is what he is best at.

Burke is driven around by his chauffeur Henry (Leon LOntoc) in his 1962 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. He is aided by a young brilliant Detective Tim Tilson (Gary Conway), and a verteran no-nonsense Detective Sergeant Les Hart (Regis Toomey). Despite Detective Tilson's skills, he is outpaced by Burke's intuition and years of experience. There's a reason that Burke is Captain of the Homicide Division.

Each episode is titled "Who Killed (insert name)? Burke also dispenses wisdom that he calls "Burke's Law".

The show had a healthy dose of humor with quirky characters. In one episode Burke called out the murderer, and the chase music starts as the killer starts to run. Burke stops the chase and music saying that both he and Detective Tilson are armed and he can't outrun a bullet.

The TV show "Honey West" is a spin-off from the episode "Who Killed Wade Walker".

Even "Burke's Law" is a spin-off of the "Dick Powell Show" episoded "Who Killed Julie Greer?." In the episode Dick Powell played Amos Burke, and the episode was popular enough to be made into a TV series. Dick Powell had turned to TV after his disappointment at losing the role of Captain Queeg in "The Cain Mutiny".

Because spies popular, in the third season the series was re-titled "Amos Burke Secret Agent", where Burke goes from Police Captain to a secret agent. The show died a swift death. It usually doesn't pay to change a winning format.

The show was revived in 1994, but only lasted for 27 episodes. Burke is back on the Los Angeles Police Force, but is now the Deputy Chief and is assisted by his Son.
