Jimbo Berkey's site -- Free Classic Movies — shares some interesting observations about Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women, along with these pictures and a link to watch it or download it!

As I write this in the fall of 2012, 73 year old motion picture director Peter Bogdanovich is filming two new movies, "You Are Here" and "Too Late." He began his legendary career in 1959 acting on Broadway and anywhere else that he could, moving behind the camera in 1967 when he directed a television documentary about Howard Hawks.

He must have seen the 1965 movie "Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet," where film from a Russian space movie was spliced with new footage of Basil Rathbone and others to make an American space adventure set in the year 2020. But this was the 1960's . . . flower power . . . make love not war . . . crushed red velvet bell bottom pants . . . free love . . .

__

Bogdanovich probably thought that the movie didn't reflect the 1960's America that he was experiencing. Maybe he thought that he could change that, and make some coin in the process, by adding new footage that the original producers had either not thought about, or didn't have the courage to add.

America was at the beginning of the 'T&A' revolution in media, and Bogdanovich probably knew it. He possibly figured that if he added a story line about beautiful, scantily clad girls on Venus, the teens of the 1960's would turn this movie into a cult classic.

__

He figured correctly.

He set the movie thirty years into the future in 1998 instead of 2020 like the original, and added a bevy of beauties in skin-tight pants and sea shell bras.

__

Thus an old Russian space adventure was born a third time as an American space adventure to the planet Venus.

__

And even when I watch this movie more than 40 years later, like most boys of this world, I still dream of a planet somewhere in our universe that is populated by beautiful blondes, just waiting for us to discover them!

I own all three versions of this movie, and I really enjoy watching them. There's the Russian original with subtitles —

_______________

— the Americanized version with dubbed dialog —

_______________

— and the girly version with hot blonds in seashell bras.

Seems like it might be worth actually mentioning the name of the original 1962 Soviet film: Planeta Bur aka Planet of Storms, etc.

The original film subtitled is on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz2vjciA9_s

But the subtitles are on the film and rather murky. It's also over on Soviet Movies Online with closed captioning that's easier to read, but you can't watch the whole thing without a membership alas.

I can't speak to the accuracy of the translations.

The article you quote isn't correct about about Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet being the inspiration because that film too was produced for Corman from Planeta Bur.

Here's the full movie from YouTube with a good picture. The sound is distorted for the first 60 seconds, but it clears up after that.
