Jimbo Berkey's former website, Free Classic Movies, offered this extremely rare film from 1958, starring Richard Derr — the charming hero from When Worlds Collide.

Who Knows What Evil Lurks in The Minds of Men?

Only The Shadow Knows!

__

Superman first appeared in 1938, and Batman first appeared in 1939. Almost a decade earlier, on July 31, 1930 The Shadow appeared on a radio detective show.

Lamont Cranston, alias The Shadow, is a wealthy 'man about town' who helps the helpless and takes vengeance on the evil doers with mystical ancient powers of the mind. His mentor is a mystic with great powers who taught him how to hypnotize people and read minds, and even to project his thoughts.

__

His greatest feat is to become invisible. He silently hypnotizes everyone a the room to believe they cannot see him . . . they can only see his shadow. With a haunting voice and a chilling laugh, he makes quick work of the bad guys and earns the admiration of all the pretty young girls.

__

In this classic adventure from 1958, The Shadow travels to New Orleans to investigate the disappearance of an old friend. While searching for answers, he becomes involved with the overthrow of a South American country and a group of gangsters who are running a popular jazz joint on Bourbon Street.

__

Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter and enjoy the show.

Until I read the two IMDB trivia items for this film, I didn't realize this movie wasn't just another "invisible man" movie, it was actually intended as a pilot for a Shadow TV series, but it was turned into a movie instead.

The other interesting trivia item states that until the Alec Baldwin film The Shadow (1994), this was the only film version of the Shadow in which he could turn invisible. The radio version could do this, but not the version in the pulps.

I also learned that the film's alternate title is Bourbon Street Shadows.
