Jimbo Berkey's website, Free Classic Movies offers this enthusiastic recommendation for Creature from the Haunted Sea a 1961 Roger Corman spoof of horror movies.

____________________________________________

Not lost in translation!

"It was getting dark . . . I could tell because the sun was going down."

Just one of the lines delivered with all seriousness that cracked me up as I watched this goofy spoof of horror and spy flicks, with a Humphrey Bogart gangster tossed in for good measure.

__

I laughed so hard that tears came to my eyes as the sight gags kept coming faster and faster, right up to the final sound of the whacky sea monster belching on a full tummy of victims as 'The End' appeared across his torso.

__

Roger Corman is well known for his low-budget thrillers, but the amazing comedy lines and sight gags in this one showed me a whole new side of his comic genius.

__

The story begins in Cuba as Fidel Castro has taken over the country and the deposed leaders are fleeing to America. Antony Carbone is Renzo Capetto, a casino operator in Cuba who has been hired by a Cuban General to take him, his men and a box full of gold out of the country.

__

Along for the ride is an American secret agent XK-150, played by Robert Towne, who narrates the tale and communicates with his secret radio made from hot dogs and pickles. The gangster, with his Bogart outfit straight out of Key Largo, has a pretty girlfriend who even sings a song at one point in the movie, and cracks wise to everyone around with her off-the-wall remarks.

__

Gangster Capetto decides to kill the Cubans one by one and take the box of gold for himself, and he has his henchmen pretend to be a sea monster as they kill the Cubans. But alas, there is a real sea monster hovering near them who also starts killing!

__

Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn and drizzle lots of warm melted butter over it and be sure to read the Spanish to English subtitles when they are offered because some of the best humor is contained in those translated words.

Heres the trailer, along with a surprising good colorized version. The cartoon prologue is hysterical! Very Happy

And get a load of this highly erotic poster! Man, talk about brazen phallic symbols. The helpless young lady is riding that claw like a cowboy on a mechanical bull!

Yeeee — haaa! Cool
