I'm afraid that I'm not an expert on file types, or conversion between them. My computer does think that this is a .avi file, which of course our VLC media player will play.

I just copied the movie onto a USB thumb drive, and plugged that into the television, and Two Lost Worlds works there fine - not full width on a modern widescreen of course, and black & white, but pretty crisp.

If a conversion is needed, I'm sure ASF has plenty of experts! Smile

Thanks, Randy. I'll try it again. I tried to follow instructions I found on line once before that are (perhaps) the same as the ones you sent the link to, but instead of converting the file it just started playing the video.

The article said it streams it at twice normal speed while converting it, and maybe that's why I thought I'd done it wrong, but when I followed the instructions just now, it started playing at normal speed, so I don't know if its converting it or not. We'll see.

I don't know why YouTube won't accept the file as it is - but that's modern online technology for you. For me the movie file says its item type is AVI file (.avi), 699 MB and 1:01:28 long... but the winrar (.rar) compressed version is still available to download as linked to a few posts back if anyone else wants to try it out. Hmm, at 702 MB the compressed version is bigger than the actual movie, which seems strange!

I'm just glad the ASF forum is back safely after the error messages earlier...

Well, I've given up on putting Two Lost Worlds on YouTube. I had noting but bad luck yesterday.

The conversion did the same thing it's done every other time I've tried to use it — the movie plays at normal speed and the "converted" copy still won't play with Windows Media Player, even though when I check the properties, it says it's supposed to.

As for Youtube, I tried to upload three movies yesterday that I thought were public domain, and YouTube blocked them worldwide "for copyright infringement". Silly me, I didn't know that users who get "three strikes" for uploading copyrighted materials will have there accounts downgraded, and they can no longer upload anything longer than the standard 15 minutes.

The terms of service says that the low status stays in effect for six months, and deleting the videos (which I did) does not change the status.

Just as an experiment, I created a new account today using my real name (Bruce Cook, but don't tell anybody), so now I can upload movies to Youtube if they don't violate a copyright.

And how does one check to be sure if a download is safe?

Well, from everything I read this morning, there's no safe way at all. A video might be seem safe for six months and then suddenly it's blocked. YouTube doesn't have list of "safe" movies and "banned" movies. Some movies get flagged right away, others sneak by for awhile and then — Bam! — they gotcha.

Yesterday I was really excited about finding a dozen or so movies I could upload under this spiffy new YouTube channel banner I created for us —

— from which our Creature Feature Selection Committee could pick movies for the Friday Live Chat. But apparently that idea just ain't a' gonna work.

Oh well.

I don't know how one could check whether a movie is "public domain" or in copyright... and copyright rules do vary from country to country. Would-be copyright holders have been known to try to fiddle records to grab copyright -sff audio have published a few cases in that line about sf short stories by an author whose name, um, rhymes with Philip K. Brick. After 65 years one would certainly expect "Two Lost Worlds" to be in the public domain...

You seem to have a few techie web people around here, maybe at least a selection of suitably vintage movies can be uploaded onto a special ASF website? Being actually able to watch them from there, as with YouTube, might be a bit more difficult, but who knows...?

I've done a bit more research, and it turns out that my plan to create a library of movies on Youtube was not realistic. Although there are a lot of movies on YouTube, their legal status is questionable, and YouTube's official position is that only the copyright holder or someone with written permission can post movies.

And as Custer said, even the so-called "public domain" movies aren't a cut-and-dried matter. Even if I had a verified list of public domain movies that were safe to post, there just aren't that many good ones.

So, I guess my idea just won't work.

The first starring role for Jim Arness (later on Gunsmoke 1955-on) takes place way back in 1830 and, for the FX, relies only on stock footage (from One Million BC/1940) of big beasts very late in the film.

This is like a Jules Verne adventure, but very low budget.

The story concerns itself with pirates and a ship's captain (Arness) in the 1st two-thirds of the film, and it's very repetitive. Some of the characters end up on a lost island in that final third, and the so-called dinosaurs (enlarged lizards) appear only in the final minutes. It's a short film, just over an hour.

That's a memory I have permenantly imprinted in my brain.

It was just the two of us at STONYBROOK STATE PARK in Dansville NY. I had recorded FORBIDDEN PLANET from a TV showing on a long play cassette and after roasting s'mores and letting the fire settle down... I pressed "play".

Hearing the fantastic "electronic tonalities" and listening to the tale about the C-57-d on Altair 4 under a dark cloudless sky with the Milky Way spread over us like a river of stars was magical!

My wish is that every father could have such a bonding experience with their child.

Gord, your follow-up post did it again; another perfect word-picture of that magical moment in the lives of you and your son. It sounds like the perfect way to enjoy this movie, somehow just as good as seeing it in a theater on the big screen! Shocked
