Sky Captain certainly has a retro feel to it - indeed, there was a bit that reminded me of Citizen Kane. Maybe the retro wasn't as successful as the Indiana Jones movies, but it's a fun movie, and well worth watching again some time. |

I just watched it again on Netflix (or was it Hulu, I get mixed up!) and enjoyed it more than I did seeing it in the theatre. It seemed to be brighter than I had recalled so that enhanced my enjoyment. |

What has always spoiled this move for me was the damn fuzzy picture! It has an annoying soft focus that I detest! _________________ ____________

Bud, the version I just watched was not only brighter, but looked more distinct (sharper) as well. |

I saw it in a theater when it was first released, and it might not have been focused properly. I saw it again a few years ago on television and it did actually look a bit better.
The filmmakers also chose to make the color muted, and that seems like a very bad idea. A movie which emulates the late 1930s should either be in black & white (which modern audiences would have hated) or in a rich Technicolor style.
They tried to split the difference, and I disliked the results intensely! _________________ ____________

The movie was suppose to be in black and white, but the studio intervened. The Director later said that the studio made the right decision.
I agree that the color should have been brighter. But as he intended to do the movie in B&W, maybe there was a problem with the software producing bright colors?
I really like the movie, but I didn't like Gwyneth Paltrow's character, it was all wrong. She should have been written like a Katharine Hepburn or Barbara Stanwyck character. That she was also responsible for a lot of the troubles was bad too.

At least the effect wasn't as disconcerting as the effects used in SIN CITY and THE SPIRIT. An entire movie in that stark design was just jarring!
One aspect in SKY CAPTAIN that bothered me was the fact that his plane used a propeller, crashed into the ocean and turned into a submarine, and then became airborne again powered by that same propeller!
Paltrow's character seemed to be patterned on the classic Lois Lane from the Fleisher's SUPERMAN cartoons from the 40's. Too one dimensional.
Still, all in all, I rather enjoyed this film.
The effects were awesomely retro!
This is the ten cent comic the movie was based on! (fake!)

What bothered me about the planes was that they dove into the ocean at full speed, as if both the plane and the pilot could survive such an impact.
And, of course, the way they leapt from the water at full speed was a bit unrealistic in view of the fact the "underwater planes" would have to be traveling as fast underwater as they did through the air!
YouTube has an interesting six-minute video of what seems to a demo for the studio heads. You'll like this, guys.

And this is an eight-minute video in which the director discusses the look of the film, with lots of amazing pre-production artwork. It made me want to give Sky Captain another look.

DYNAMITE is publishing a book on the art from SKY CAPTAIN.
It is planned for release this fall.
From the video above from Youtube the art looks amazing!
Here's a few examples of the art.

I think it would have been more fun if Jolie's character had been named Frankie Paul. |

Possibly a relative of golden age sf artist Frank R. Paul...?
Pulp magazines had great back covers then, as well as front covers... |

Correct! Especially since the flying platform looks like it came straight from one of Paul's AIR WONDER STORIES covers. |
