Russell George "Russ" Manning [(January 5, 1929 – December 1, 1981) was an American comic book artist who created the series Magnus, Robot Fighter and illustrated such newspaper comic strips as Tarzan and Star Wars. He was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2006.

Wikipedia™ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russ_Manning ] did a sub feature in Magnus, Robot Fighter titled Captain Johner and the Aliens.

Being a fan of Andre Norton (she pronounced her name as 'ann - dree"), Robert A. Heinlein and Forbidden Planet, he created his own system of enlisted rank markings and kept those of officers. Here are some images from

Used with their kind permission. More images to follow as soon as they are sent to me.

This military style even 'leaked' into Magnus, Robot Fighter!

From Forbidden Planet he created these:

I wonder how he saw the various sci-fi space forces and institutions?

The enlisted rank symbol used was 3 black chevrons pointed down and superimposed on it was smaller gold chevrons pointed down with gold rocker chevrons over them. Does this sound familiar to any readers of Captain Johner and the Aliens?

And you made me realize that I've been placing the Starlog articles devoted to sci-fi artists in Sci-Fi Discussions in General when they should have been placed in this category! Shocked

Earlier in his life, as a young artist working for Dell, Russ worked on a JOHN CARTER OF MARS book to follow the two done by Jesse Marsh. Unfortunatly it was never published but some of the art exists.

Good stuff!

I'm a big fan of Russ Manning's artwork.

I've collected the Magnus: Robot Fighter, 4000 A.D. he did for Gold Key Comics. He did marvelous art in those comics, and the premise of humankind allowing robots to do too much for us is even more relevant today.

My friend and I always thought that the alien design for Captain Johner & the Aliens was incredibly imaginative looking and remains so to this very day.
