Firefly
Jewel Staite as Kaywinnet Lee "Kaylee" Frye — the ship's mechanic. In the episode "Out of Gas", it is established that she has no formal training, but keeps Serenity running with an intuitive gift for the workings of mechanical equipment. Jewel Staite explains Kaylee's character as being wholesome, sweet, and "completely genuine in that sweetness", adding "She loves being on that ship. She loves all of those people. And she is the only one who loves all of them incredibly genuinely." She has a crush on Dr. Simon Tam. Kaylee is the heart of the ship: according to creator Joss Whedon, if Kaylee believes something, it is true.

Thanks for getting a thread start for this wonderful show, BDT! I've loved it for years, and I own the box set (all 14 episodes, oh wow, they shouldn't have made so many . . . )
I think Josh Whedon wondered if he could make a show as good as Star Trek and then wait to see if the network morons canceled it even quicker.
He did . . . and they did. _________________ ____________

|

All this animated Firefly clip needs is 2 Seconds to break your heart
James Whitbrook, I09
It's funny how two seconds of animation about a 9-year-old plot point can be so emotional, but I guess that's just Firefly's MO at this point. Excellent work, Stephen Byrne!
We've featured Byrne's work on io9 before, but this tease for an 'Animated Adventures of Firefly' he's working on is enough to have us all verklempt and nostalgic before we've seen any more of it outside of the gif above. Goddamit, Hoban Washburne. We shouldn't still be feeling this 9 years after Serenity!
The animation itself is lovely, but just as intriguing is the whole process behind it - here's a video from Byrne that shows all the work that goes into just 2 seconds of animation:

Loved Firefly.
And after that picture of Jewel I have a strong urge to join that crew. |

'Firefly' stars reunite for crowdfunded Web series
CNET
The pilot and the captain of Serenity are back in action together, raising funds for "Con Man," a fictional look behind the scenes at sci-fi fan conventions.
"It's going to be a blast flying a spaceship again," actor Alan Tudyk tells Crave. Tudyk is writing a new story. The tales of his past are well known to sci-fi fans. He played Hoban "Wash" Washburne, the pilot of the spaceship Serenity in "Firefly." The Western-inflected "Firefly" lasted one glorious season before being prematurely canceled by Fox in 2003.
It was fandom that kept "Firefly" in the spotlight all these years since. The original 14 episodes and the follow-up movie "Serenity" fostered a continuing interest fed by fan conventions, as Browncoats (as "Firefly" lovers are known) gathered to celebrate the series and the people who made it happen. Now Tudyk is toasting the fans in return by launching a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo for a new Web series called "Con Man."
"Con Man" is about the adventures of Wray Nerely (Tudyk), an actor who played a spaceship pilot in a cancelled series called "Spectrum," which became a beloved cult classic. Nerely makes his way through a mostly obscure life as a guest at fan conventions while his friend and co-star Jack Moore, played by Nathan Fillion of "Firefly" and "Castle," has gone on to A-list Hollywood fame . . .

Tudyk is a very enjoyable actor to watch, and it doesn't surprise me that he's gto the talent to write, direct, and star in his own series.
The fact that Fillion and other Firefly alumni are working with him speaks well of the personal connection he has with his former co-star.
I hope all this works out. _________________ ____________

Check Out Firefly's Kaylee Dressed Up As Captain Mal
By Nick Venable, Cinemablend
....check out this shot of Firefly actress Jewel Staite going all Captain Mal for Alan Tudyk"s Con Man.....
That's one of the most glorious things ever. For one, everyone should have a costume like this in their closet, just in case the Earth is ever attacked by reavers. Two, Staite looks so much more womanly now than she did when she starred as Kaylee, as she was only around 20 at the time, and it adds a nice layer of realism on the costume. Three, she's pregnant, and if your faith in humanity isn't restored in a weird way by thinking about Nathan Fillion's buccaneer space captain with a bun in the oven, then I don't know what to tell you. I don't know what to tell me, either. ......

That's a great picture, and the lady is more lovely than ever. Thanks for passing this on to use, BDT! _________________ ____________

I have seen photos of Molly Quinn (the Daughter on "Castle") at a convention dressed up as Mal. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=molly+quinn+as+mal&FORM=HDRSC2
I wonder if she had Nathan Fillion help her out with the outfit. He owns one from the show/movie, and even wore it on one episode of "Castle".

Did Nathan help Molly prepare the costume? If I had to guess, I'd say yes.
But the costume I'd just love to "help her" with is the one she wore in the Castle episode in which Richard was not really happy about the way his daughter was running around the convention, surrounded by horny fantasy fans who here having fantasies not specific to comic books!
And somewhere in a parallel universe chocked-full of horny guys is a version of the new Supergirl series with Miss Quinn in the lead role, getting ready to fight crime with a quick disrobing and an impish smile!

I didn't think I'd like this show much, but I thought it was great enough to go and buy the set on DVD!

________________________________
IMDB has 51 trivia items for this movie. Here’s a few of the ones I found the most interesting, in the blue text.
________________________________
~ Between shots, the cast preferred to wait in the ship's lounge instead of their trailers/dressing rooms.
Note from me: It's nice to know that the cast was as close in real life as they were on screen.
~ The cast had a running gag where they would yell Summer Glau's name whenever they flubbed a line or messed up. It began after she forgot her line at the end of a particularly difficult scene. The gag continued through the filming of Serenity (2005).
Note from me: I get it. It's sort of like saying, "Well, son-of-a-bitch!". Only funnier.
~ Every time Mal rides a horse, no matter what planet, it's always the same horse. His name is Fred.
Note from me: Getting that horse from one planet to the next must have been expensive!
~ According to Amy Pascale's 2014 biography of Joss Whedon, Whedon proposed a Firefly plotline in which Inara injected herself with a prophylactic solution - not a birth control but a serum that would poison anyone who raped her. Whedon's idea was that Inara would then be kidnapped and gang-raped, but that the rapes would take place offscreen, and the only sign of them would be a pile of her rapists later found dead. This plotline was nixed by the network and no version of it ever appeared on the show.
Note from me: In this case, I sort of agree with the network. Inara being gang-raped would have been very disturbing. The most appealing aspect of her character was the fact that she was more like a therapist than a prostitute, which made her a very admirable person and a likable character. That's why we viewers were annoyed that Mal attacked so unfriendly to her (despite being in love).
__________
~ During the DVD commentary, it is mentioned that there was a subplot for Inara that was never developed but that was foreshadowed with a number of shots and/or lines during the series. At a 2008 Dragoncon panel, Morena Baccarin confirmed the long-standing rumor that that subplot would have involved Inara having a terminal illness.
Note from me: Well, dang . . . that one hit me right between the eyes. It the show had stayed on the air for seven years the way Whedon expected, Inara would probably have passed away at some point. Bummer, eh?
~ As with Star Trek (1966), the first pilot was rejected, forcing the preparation of a new one, "The Train Job." The original pilot, "Serenity" (which introduced the characters and their story arcs) was the final episode aired in the show's original run.
Note from me: Brother, if that doesn't prove the network execs were dumber than Tabasco sauce on a snow cone, I don't know what does!
~ The entire interior of Serenity, and some of the exterior, was built full-scale and almost completely contiguous. It was split across two sound stages: one for the upper deck and one for the lower deck, shuttle docks, and hold.
Note from me: I had to looked it up. Contiguous means, "sharing a common border; touching." The "tig" is pronounced like "pig".
Gee, ain't grammar grand?
~ The pistol-sized lever action gun Zoe wears on her hip and sometimes uses is called a Mare's Leg. It is a cut down Model 1892 Winchester, the same gun used by Steve McQueen in the TV series Wanted: Dead or Alive (1958).
____________
Note from me: I wonder if this item means it's actually the same gun used in the series, or just the same kind of gun.
~ Joss Whedon was one of the screenwriters of "Toy Story" about a cowboy doll and a toy spaceman.
Note from me: Well, well. I admire the guy who made that interesting connection. Clever.
~ In the 20th Century Fox film Alien: Resurrection (1997). The Betty crew (A crew of space pirates) led by Frank Elgyn are hired by the military scientists aboard the USM Auriga to kidnap humans in suspended animation and deliver them to the scientists, so they can be hosts for aliens. Series creator Joss Whedon was the screenwriter of Alien: Resurrection (1997).
Note from me: Alien: Resurrection is actually a good movie. It doesn't surprise me that the talented Mr. Whedon wrote it. _________________ ____________
