"Brimstone" was a 1998_9 Fox TV show that only lasted 13 episodes. It should have ran more, but it was in the Friday night death slot. It starred Peter Horton as Ezekiel Stone and John Glover (having a great time) as Satan and his Brother.

Ezekiel Stone is New York city's most decorated Detective. After his wife's rapist is cleared of the charges, Stone hunts him down and murders him. Not long after Stone is killed on duty and is condemned to hell for his crime.

After fifteen years in hell, the Devil offers Stone a deal. Occasionally souls escape from hell, but are quickly sent back. But there has been a mass escape of 113 souls, and ol' Scratch wants them back. The Devil has limited powers on Earth, so if Stone will hunt them down, and send them back to hell, he will get a second chance on Earth.

But there are complications. Stone and the escapees are pretty much invulnerable, and the only way to kill them (or for Stone to be killed) is for the eyes to be destroyed. After all, the eyes are the window into the soul. The longer your stay in hell, the more powerful you are on Earth. So most of Stones adversaries will be much faster and stronger than he. Also if one of Stone's targets kill him, then the deal is off.

Further complicating Stone's task, is Satan himself who delights in making Stone's assignment as difficult as possible. He gives Stone limited information, disinformation, and misleading leads. Stone has no need to eat, but he does so, and is chastised by Satan for doing so. In fact he criticizes everything Stone does, trying to convince Stone that he was always destined for hell, even though Stone is striving to be moral.

Every morning when Stone awakens, he is dressed in the clothing he was killed in, and any damage the clothing suffered the day before is repaired. He has only what he died with, his identification, sidearm, ammunition, the money he had on him and whatever he had in his pockets.

But all is not hopeless for Stone. In one episode an Angel seeks Stone out. The Angel is shocked that Stone sees him as the Devil. A consequence of being in hell, is that all Angels look alike to you. The Angel informs Stone that his actions are not going unnoticed, and that he is also doing Gods work. Stone is informed that he was never damned until he committed the murder, and his fate is in his hands, not the Devils.

Can Stone resist the Devil's words? Can he send all 113 souls back to hell before one sends him back?

Unfortunately we will never know.

There are two scenes I remember well. One is where Stone gets fed up with Satan and shoots him in the eyes, sending Satan back to hell. Satan WAS NOT amused.

A second one is where he goes to a blind Priest for help, telling the Priest who he is. The Priest is elated, because the existence of the Devil, means that there is a God! Stone's reply was that he couldn't say as he never met him.

It is not available on DVD, as the owning company has no interest in releasing it on DVD. A pity.

David.
