Roger Corman who came up with the idea for his film originally had the lead character a scientist. However, he felt that was too obvious a way to go and decided to make it about a jazz musician instead who develops the x-ray abilities with his eyes. The cause for this superpower was due to the musician having taken too many drugs.
Once writing the script, Corman found it did not work and he changes the lead back to a scientist.
The film had a five minute opening prologue about the human senses which was edited out.
Final film of the wonderful character actor Morris Ankrum.
On British television the film is titled simply "X."
The movie was shot in three weeks and had a budget of under $300,000.
Yep, that's a Corman film alright.
Director Tim Burton and writer Bryan Goluboff developed a script for a remake but was never produced.
On the June 23, 1972 show of The Tonight Show: Starring Johnny Carson, Ray Milland and Don Rickles were the guests.
Milland said that while this movie they were in together was terrible, Rickles was brilliant.
Don was indeed a very fine dramatic actor in addition to being a famous stand-up comedian. |

Of the many uses such an ability would have, doctors would be able to do what Ray did in the comic and the movie — actually see medical conditions within a patients body much better than with actual X-ray images. |
Of course, nearly 60 years ago, nobody could have predicted today's tremendous advances in medical imaging technology. Ultrasound was just beginning to come into use, while CT scanning and MRI were years in the future.
I wonder, could Ray Milland's X-ray vision see into a body as well as modern diagnostic imaging machines?

That sounds more like typical Corman exploitation fare. I suppose if you take enough illicit substances you may think you have X-ray vision like Superman. (You may think you can fly like Superman also!) |
