This one caught me completely by surprise. The plot is very ambitious and reasonably well done. Despite poor reviews and bad box office returns, it's well worth seeing.

The story includes a time travel element, but the most interesting aspect of the story is the concept that science not only proves the existence of souls, it finds a way to transfer a person's soul from one body to another, effectively extending the persons life by literally replacing an old, sick body with a new, healthy one.

Emilio Estevez is snatched from a fiery race car crash in the present by an agency in the future which supplies healthy bodies from the past for rich people who don't want to die, because they know they can't take it with 'em!

Emilio spoils the plans the agency has for his body by escaping from the operating room where his body is being prepped for the procedure to make it ready for a new soul.

The film is action packed, with Emilio and Rene Russo running from the bad guys, and the climax has some nice surprises and interesting twists.

Hey, I did extra work on this one. Almost had a gross, horrorish moment all my own, but...alas... the sun she set, the dark she come, the director of photography he say "no no, the light is gone." And thus is a brilliant career derailed.

Not that one quick, silent moment in a forgotten movie would have made a career...but it couldn't hoit.

This is a pretty good movie . . . but it didn't start out that way. The IMDB trivia items below (in blue text) are interesting, especially the first one.
________________________________

According to reports at the time of the production and interviews with some members of cast and crew, original version of the movie had disastrous test screening, so producer Ronald Shusett was brought in to re-shoot around 40% of the movie and add more character scenes and humor. Emilio Estevez also mentioned how director Geoff Murphy let them down by focusing too much on action in his original cut of the film.

Note from me: This kind of thing is common in Hollywood, but this seems like an unusual case. They reshot 40% of the movie? Wow . . .

Linda Fiorentino was originally cast as Julie but was replaced by Rene Russo after a week of shooting.

Note from me: This one struck me the same way as the one above. A week of shooting and they fired poor Miss Fiorentino. But it's hard to go wrong with Miss Russo!
Very Happy

Emilio Estevez stars as a race car driver in the then-present of 1991 who is destined to die in a fiery crash that year.

Unknown to him, in the future year of 2009 (now quite a bit in the past to audiences), a certain breed of mercenaries (led by Mick Jagger in a rare film role) have developed time travel to steal such doomed souls of the past and bring them to 2009 as simply replacement bodies for the super wealthy (represented by Anthony Hopkins, whose role is little more than a cameo).

In this future, it seems, most people have unsuitable bodies, which have been wrecked via drugs and whatnot. The connecting rod between both time eras is the race car driver's girlfriend, played by Rene Russo (who could pass for 20, 30 or 40 back then).

Of course, to keep things a bit interesting, the man from 1991 unexpectedly escapes the mercs and goes on the run in this new era of 2009, getting help from a gun-toting nun (Amanda Plummer) and soon finding his agent. Of course, the main goal is to find his girlfriend.
