Science Fiction Vehicles which carried us on Great Advantures!

Some of the most enjoyable science fiction movies have presented us with marvelous modes of transportation which carried us on great adventures!

These are often unique inventions which pioneered new scientific discoveries. They allowed the characters to travel in unique ways — sometimes high in the air, other times deep under the sea! :shock;

Here's a few examples. __________________________________________________

Jules Verne was a master when it came to crafting exotic vehicles which carried us on grand adventures. One example which is often overlooked is his lighter-than-air ship that used "heated helium" to control the altitude of the airship Jupiter in Five Weeks in a Balloon (1962)!



The heroic crew of the Jupiter used their unique airship to ride the air currents and defeat a band of slave traders in the 1800s!

A noble adventure, presented with a fine cast and wonderful special effects.

In 1961, kids like me rushed to our local theaters to join the crew of of USOS Seaview for a trip around the world, and a magnificent Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea!

We were dazzled by the design of this submarine which had fins like a Cadillac and picture windows like a Las Vegas hotel!

This remarkable "adventure vehicle" dazzled us with sights we've never forgotten.

A few years later we joined Professor Cavor when he defied gravity with the help of H.G. Wells and Ray Harryhausen, and we became the First Men in the Moon (1964)








Cavor's "gravity blocking" sphere shot us right out into space and landed us on the Moon! The local inhabitants welcomed us . . . at first.

Just two years after that we dove down into the depths of the human body in Fantastic Voyage (1966), to explore the microscopic world of biology.




The sights we saw were like nothing mankind had ever observed!

But the greatest "science fiction adventure vehicle" from the classic sci-fi movies is undoubtedly the one presented in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954)!

Kidnapped by a rogue genius who wages war against war itself . . . carried across the ocean and shown wonders of the deep which no man had ever witnessed . . . this adventure has thrilled millions of viewers! .

Leave us not forget the awesome submarine-tank-helicopter from The Three Stooges In Orbit!!!

How about some mole machines?

The Avenger from the 1993 TV-movie/pilot Journey to the Center of the Earth was pretty cool looking. Instead of having a giant drill on the nose of their burrowing vehicle they used sonic waves to liquify rocks.

The Core (2003) had the Virgil which took its crew to the depths of the inner earth. Another nifty looking vehicle.

Thanks for the great replies, guys! Those are all great additions to our rapidly growing list of "science fiction adventure vehicles"!

As for me, I tried to keep my entries focused on vehicles of different types which served as transportation for people who went on great adventures — preferable to several destinations, although I made an exception when I included the cavorite sphere, because it's such a unique vehicle.

So, my list above included three awesome submarines, a gravity-neutralizing sphere, and a very humble hot air balloon.

There are, of course, many spaceships we could include, but I think the starships that really belong at the top of the list are Voyager and all the versions of Enterprise.













By the way, kudos to Ralfy for adding the Damnation Alley "Landmaster" — an awesome machine that clearly rates a place on our list.



And, gentlemen, I'd be remiss if I didn't pay tribute to that wonderful catamaran that transported The Mariner across the global sea of Waterworld!



Another wonderful lighter-than-air ship which should be included is the "Hyperion" from Island at the Top of the World.

And finally, the most unusual "adventure vehicle" from the classic era is the one which traveled the farthest distance of them all . . . even though it never moved an inch!

The Time Machine took us 800.000 years into the future.







Some folks will disagree with me, but I think the 2002 version is equally awesome, and I love the remake as well.
