Great posts, guys. It's obvious that you share my love for the dreams that people like Walt had, as well as my sadness over the fact that their dreams haven't come true. _________________ ____________

Although I wasn't born in the 50s, it does seem like a simpler, happier time (apart from the sexism and horrible racism, of course). Studios and celebrities had a sense of moral responsibility to their audience and acted accordingly (rightly or wrongly).
I imagine most of you know, Bob Denver was a heavy smoker but never allowed a photo of him as Gilligan smoking a cigarette out of concern for children picking up the habit. William Boyd was a hell-raiser and womanizer but once he got famous as Hopalong Cassidy, he reformed to be a better example for the children who watched his show. You don't get much of that sense of personal responsibility anymore.
I'm sure that's why for the last few years I've been watching mostly "old stuff" instead of the new crap ladled out for us in theaters and on TV. It started out as research for my "magnum opus" but I found myself more drawn to it that I expected, even though I always gravitated to older entertainment.
Now the studios and celebrities are all about their own product/brand, riches and fame and screw everything else. "I didn't ask for/sign up to be a role model" is something we've heard time-and-again from celebrities and sports stars. Anyone decent would accept the role as part of the price for fame, but not the modern narcissistic carbon-based unit infesting planet Terra. _________________ "Have you never wondered what it would be like to walk between the ticks and tocks of Time?" |
