Hands-down, this has to be the incomparable Danny Kaye's finest movie of his marvelous career.

Danny Kaye only had a few weeks to learn fencing as he was coming off another production. They were unable to use the funniest scene in the movie, which had Danny Kaye's blade tip accidentally catch Basil Rathbone's toupee and sent it flying across the soundstage.

Loved this movie since I was a kid!

Got the DVD from the bargain bin at Big Lots years ago and introduced my wife to it. I thought she'd wet herself she laughed so hard during the sword fight (we both took fencing lessons before we met)...actually, at our age, she probably did wet herself a bit

A fellow teacher from back in 2000, whose name was Carmine Haasenritter — a wonderful middle-aged lady with a great personality — used to joke with me by quoting, "The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle!"

I'd respond with, "The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!"

And our students would stare at us while wondering if we'd gone mad! Shocked
